This was the 50th edition of Berlin Marathon and with 54.280 finisher Berlin has become the biggest marathon of the world. It‘s an amazing race and the atmosphere was epic. Weather was perfect – clear blue skies and cool temperatures between 10-15 degrees Celsius. The course is absolutely flat and takes runners through different parts of the city. It never gets boring and most of the time there are many people cheering even though the Germans are not that loud and enthusiastic as the Americans for example in Chicago and New York. The medal, which I never liked in Berlin, is for the very first time absolutely beautiful!
What runners should know before coming to Berlin to run the marathon: the expo is always absolutely crowded and you need to bring time! It takes place at the old airport of Tempelhof which is located more or less in the city centre and it’s quite interesting to see this old airport and the old so called „Rosinenbomber/Candy Bomber“, but it was so crowded that we had wait for about 1 hour to get into the expo. We visited the expo on Thursday in the afternoon right when it opened. Maybe it would be better to go there in the morning or later in the evening.

For the first time ever Berlin Marathon offered a 5k shake out run the day before the marathon. The last 5k of the official marathon course including the world famous finish through Brandenburger Tor can be run on Saturday morning. The race starts at 10 am and around 10.000 runners took part in this inaugural and sold out 5k. The atmosphere was fantastic and having the chance to finish like the marathoners do, is absolutely worth to run these 5k, which are the perfect shake out run for all runners who want to run the marathon on Sunday!

Very well organised race in the city of Kassel! As I didn’t visit the expo I can’t say anything about it, but all runners got a bag with quite some stuff in it including barrs, a plastic bottle and gel. Start is next to the stadium and the finish is in the stadium where the atmosphere was really super! Unfortunately the course was quite boring for the first 15k and it was also quite challenging as there was a long uphill part from km 10 to 15. The last 6 k were fun as mostly downhill and more beautiful with spectators along the course through downtown!

Stavanger Marathon is a running festival which offers different distances. I ran the half marathon. Start is in downtown right at the lake and staying in one of the hotels in downtown makes it all easy. It took me not even 5 minutes from my hotel (Radisson Blue) to the start. The course takes you right out of the city and the whole course is a bit challenging, but very beautiful with stunning views mostly along the waterside. The finish is in downtown where the start was. Good atmosphere at the start/finish area! Super beautiful medal! All in all a very good and well organised race!

Blankenese is one of the poshest parts of Hamburg and it‘s very beautiful located at the river. It‘s well known for its many stairs. Runners can choose between 2 different half marathon courses – the easier one which has around 250 meters of altitude and the harder one which includes many stairs. I chose the easier one and that one was more than tough enough. Perfect organisation, nice medal, nice course and in the finish we got water, beer, fruits, donuts, brezel – really very lovely race!

The Isle of Man is a beautiful island and it‘s definitely worth a short trip. The half marathon takes place in Ramsey which is in the north of the island. It‘s very well organised and everything is extremely easy going! Around 70 runners were running the full and almost 400 runners the half marathon. The course is beautiful, but has got some tough uphill parts. The start is at the beautiful promenade of Ramsey and finish is in the mini stadium, which provides a very good atmosphere. All runners get a T-Shirt, a medal and a free super rich buffet after the race! Thumbs up!!!

Wiesbaden City Marathon is a quite new event. This year it was the 3rd edition. Runners have the choice between 3/5/10 km as well as half- and full marathon. I ran the half marathon. Start was at 7pm together with the marathon runners. The course is a loop of 10,5km which had to be run twice. The atmosphere at the start was great. It‘s a big party on Bowling green – an area between Kurhaus (concert hall of Wiesbaden) and the state theatre. Unfortunately the support along the course is not the best and could definitely be better. The course is not flat – it has some long uphill parts. At the beginning it was way too narrow! Fortunately I was not up to run fast. 😅 Water and iso Drinks as well as fruits were offered very often. The medal is beautiful and the atmosphere at the finish couldn’t be better!

The Norderstedter Stadtlauf in the suburbs of Hamburg is a super nice and smooth event. You can choose between 5 or 10k. The course is a flat 5k loop that has to be run twice for the 10k. There were quite a few spectators along the course and at the finish. All runners got a beautiful wooden medal. Water was offered every 1,5k and in the finish area apples and bananas were offered to the runners. Self made sandwiches and cakes were offered as well for a very little amount of money. Very nice race!

Very well organised race! Weather conditions were super perfect! Race start was at 8:30pm, which was a bit late as we were already exhausted from a day full of sightseeing. Gdynia is very close to Gdansk and Gdansk is such a beautiful city! The course is very flat which means that it‘s a perfect race to run PBs in case you like to run in the evening. As Gdynia is not a very beautiful city the course is not very scenic but has some nice parts of which the finish line is definitely the best! The finish is a big party with laser show, good music and also big support by the crowd! The medal is one of the most beautiful ones I‘ve ever received and the T-Shirt is also ok!

Nice and flat course along the waterfront and through downtown Baku! Bib pick up is in the Deniz Mall – easy, but no expo at all – you only get your number. Start should have been at 10am. It was very crowded and when I came to the Startblock 20 minutes to 10am I had no chance to get a little closer to the startline. I checked the other runners and was wondering about their running outfit. Most of them didn’t wear proper running clothes. At 9:45am I heard a first countdown and about 5 minutes later the second. I was wondering what the countdowns were for? The guy next to me looked at me and said: you look like you’re running sub 2 hours. I said yes! He then told me that my group had already started. Ok, now I knew that I stood in the middle of the very slow runners and walkers. That really sucked!
You should know: they are talking about 18500 runners taking part in the race, about 13500 runners can be found in the list of results, of which about 7000 did not start (DNS). Of the 6500 runners that started around 4000 runners did not finish (DNF). Around 2500 runners finished the race…
Beside that the race was really good. Some enthusiastic spectators in costumes along the beautiful course. Big party in the finish area with live music acts. Weather conditions were good: sunny with come clouds and quite heavy wind as Baku is a very windy city in general.

A nice event with several distances to choose: 5k / 12k / 21k / 42k. The 42k starts at 8am, all others at 10am which is a bit late as weather was hot and sunny! The expo takes place at Marriott Hotel and is as small and functional as it could be. All the volunteers are very friendly! The race is good at the beginning, a bit boring in between and very challenging at the end as runners have to deal with the traffic and sometimes I didn’t know where to run. Unfortunately Armenians drive like crazy and some of the drivers didn’t take care of the runners. Nice T-Shirt and of course a medal which was the one we should have gotten in October when the race originally should have taken place.

2 laps course around Boulder Reservoir. The course is quite easy with only a little elevation. Weather was perfect. So was organisation. Huge parking space available and easy going pick up of the bibs and also bag drop very easy. Water, Gatorate and gels every 2km (!!!). Except of the part that the race all in all is not one of the most exciting ones, it’s absolutely recommendable! Around 300 runners ran the half marathon. Distances of 5 and 10km were also offered. With a result of 1:53:37 I got 1st in my age group (50-59) which means that it‘s not the fastest running field… 😅 All participants got a nice cotton T-Shirt and all finisher got a very nice medal! 🥇

Berlin Half is spectacular! With almost 40.000 runners it’s one of the biggest half’s in the world. Flat and fast! You meet running friends from all over the world. Top atmosphere! But: go to the expo as early as possible. Saturday afternoon sucks! Long lines everywhere! Weather conditions at the beginning of April can differ a lot. Last year quite cool, but this year very warm with temperatures above 20 degrees Celsius. I ran Berlin 1 day after Prague why I was more than happy with my performance!

Normally the shirts of races organised by Czech Run are beautiful, this time unfortunately the shirt was not beautiful at all. The new course of the race leads across the bridges of Prague several times and also across Wenzel Square. The course is a bit challenging as many streets are paved with cobblestone!

Many runners did so! The course is still the same – a bit boring. Only km 10-12 are good! But the course is flat and as weather conditions were perfect it‘s a good race for PBs.

Nice flat course with only one mentionable uphill part at km 19. I really recommend this race! It was the third time I ran it and it gets better and better!

Cotonou Marathon is a quite new running event taking place in the city of Cotonou, the most important city in Benin 🇧🇯. The organisers aim to become the biggest marathon in Africa. They offer the distances of 42k, 21k, 10k, 5k. As my favourite distance is the half marathon I signed up for the 21k. I was very surprised that I was one of only 32 runners running the half marathon. It was a mix of locals and expats from the US or from Europe living in Cotonou. I was the only runner that extra travelled to Cotonou for the race. Weather conditions were the worst I ever experienced: temperatures around 33-35 degrees and a humidity of 95%. I was completely wet after running a few hundred meters. It‘s absolutely recommendable to take water with you even though water was offered every 3-5km. Start and finish is at the statue de l‘Amazone next to the parliament. Unfortunately finishers of the half marathon did not get a medal. Only finishers of the full marathon (23 runners) got a medal. I have a feedback to the organisers and told them that I am very disappointed as I extra came from Germany. When they heard that they promised me to send a medal to me as they had a few spare medals left. 5 weeks after the race took place I really got a lovely wooden medal! 😍

If you wanna run a half marathon in Africa, go for this one! It’s perfectly organised and the location couldn’t be more beautiful. Hawassa is a lovely place at the lake about 250km south of Addis Abeba. People are extremely friendly and all the local people were standing at the course to cheer for the runners! Weather conditions were absolutely lovely. The altitude of 1700 meters above sealevel is a bit tricky, but still ok. Most of the runners stay at the wonderful Haile Ressort – so did I. It’s an amazing hotel where you can relax and enjoy the stay! Everything takes place at Haile Resort: pick up of the starter kit, pasta party and also a meeting where runners where informed about everything what was good to know, even that there was one heavy uphill part between km 8 and 9. In the morning of the raceday runners were brought to the start by buses at 5am. Start was at 6:30am. The sunrise at the start was the most beautiful I I have ever seen. Valencia Half Marathon is one of the 6 Super Half Marathons and of course is one of the most popular half marathons in Europe. It sells out every year and runners have to sign up as early as possible to get a spot for this race. Well, I participated in the Half Marathon World Championships in Valencia in 2018 and for the championships they had changed the course so that runners finished at the super iconic City of Sciences where also the finish of the full marathon is. The course of the half ordinary half marathon is a bit disappointing compared to the one I ran in 2018. The start and finish is in the middle of nowhere. The area for the start was very crowded and not very attractive. The course is very flat which is good to run PBs. The weather also was perfect. The atmosphere during the race was good at some spots. All in all I had so much higher expectations of the race. In my opinion they should us the same course as they did for the World Championships in 2018.

The Franklin Meilenlauf takes place in an area outside of the city of Mannheim, where the US-Army was based in former times. The course is quite flat, but the scenery is nothing to talk about. The best part is when runners run through the area of the BUGA (Bundesgartenschau). It´s all easy going and very relaxed!

This race is really a very special one as the city of Karlovy (Karlsbad) is incredibly beautiful and the course of the half marathon is as scenic as a course through a city can be. Like all races by Czech Run the production is very good. Good T-Shirt, nice medal, nice small expo. If you wanna run in Czeck Republic this race is a very good alternative to the popular Prague Half Marathon!

Lisbon Half is a very popular flat and fast race. As part of the SuperHalf Series it‘s a must run race in Europe. The start is spectacular running over the beautiful bridge of 25th April reminding of Golden Gate Bridge. Weather was beautiful with fog clearing right before the start. After crossing the bridge the race becomes quite boring and no spectators along the course. The finish at the beautiful monetary of Belém is great! Water and iso drinks were offered every 2,5km. There were no start waves so the fast runners should be at the start early to line up in the front as slow runners will also do so!

The start in downtown Alicante is nice and the finish at the beach also. The rest is boring. The weather conditions were hard as it was much warmer then expected and there is no chance to run in the shadow.

What a lovely race! Start is in Arona. There is a good hotel right at the start where man runners stayed at. It was a sunny but very chilly morning at the Lago Maggiore – perfect conditions for a good race. The half marathon takes runners the first 5k in a loop aeound Arona and then straight all the way at the lake to Stresa where the finish is. The full marathon runners continue to Verbana. The medal was made out of wood – very beautiful! After the race all runners got on a boat for a beauty ride across the lake to Verbana and then back to Arona – perfect!!!! I loved it!

Flat course which unfortunately is quite boring. A few bands along the course. Marathon and half marathon runners start at 9 am while 10k runners start at 10 am which leads to a very congested situation at the finish – getting your bags takes a while. Water, energy drinks as well as gels are offered along the course several times. Nice medal. Best hotel to stay is Best Western Hotel which is very close to start/finish.

Tbilisi Marathon is the biggest running event in beautiful Georgia and offers the distances of 10 and 21k. It’s well organised and everything is easy. There is no expo as it’s a rather small event with around 500 runners for the half marathon distance. The majority of participants runs the 10k. Beautiful medal! Start and finish in downtown! Stay at Wyndham Grand Hotel as it is perfectly located. Only 300 meters away from start/finish line! The course is a 2 laps course! I loved the race!

Cuxhaven Marathon usually takes part at the beginning of April. This year it has been postponed twice due to Covid-19. It finally took part on October 18th and the pandemic concept of the production wich made it possible to get the authorisation was impressive. Marathon and half marathon wich normally start together in the morning were separated into 2 different events which both were limited up to 400 participants. Marathon start was at 9 am and half marathon at 1.30pm. Start was in downtown Cuxhaven (small city of 50.000 people) and the participants were divided into 4 groups of hundred runners each. Every runner had it´s marked point in the starting area with 1,50 meters distance to each other. Every line of 3 runners got its own release! Of course masks had to be worn all time while starting and after finishing. Even the portable toilets were disinfected after every user. The course was a beautiful 2 laps course (half marathon) wich lead runners from downtown to the beautiful seaside and back. Water and other drinks like cola were offered very frequently along the course and in the finish area alcohol free beer was offered. Every finisher got a medal included in a finisher bag with drinks and fruits. T-shirts could be purchased with registration and as the T-Shirts are really beautiful I did so! :-)))

Super well organised race! Beautiful course along the waterside of Helsinki with start and finish at Finlandia Hall which is a 5-10 minutes walk from main station. The course contains several slight uphill parts. Drinks (water and iso) and are being offered along the course every 2-3km. At km 11 or 12 even gels were offered. Nice finish area with photo wall! Every runner gets a nice medal, alcohol fee beer and a drinking bottle by sponsor BORG! All in all a perfect half marathon!

First of all: I haven’t heard of Usti nad Labem before. It’s a smaller Czech city close to the German border not far from the city of Dresden which made it easy for me to get there. The city does not have anything to offer for tourists but a perfectly organised half marathon in times of COVID-19!!! The race is organised by RunCzech which are always perfectly organised races. The expo took place outdoor, only the hand out of the race numbers and T-Shirts took place indoor. All runners got a free Adidas T-Shirt as it was the 10th edition of the race. Official race T-Shirts and Singlets could be purchased with the registration. Normally I never choose the option to by a shirt, but as this one was really beautiful I got the singlet which is also by Adidas as Adidas is the official sponsor. The race started at 3pm. As it was a sunny and very warm September day I would have appreciated an earlier start-time. The course is mostly flat with some slight uphill parts and a few bridges to cross. The atmosphere in the city was super, but of course there were also some quite industrial areas to run through. Drinks (water and Gatorade) were offered very frequently (like every 3k). In the finish every runner got a medal and some foods and drinks. Special COVID-19 measures were: all Runners had to wear a mask in the start and finish area, the temperature of all runners entering the start corrals were measured, desinfection gel could be found all over! I really felt safe at all times! Thanks to RunCzech for a perfect race!!!

Finland seems to be the only the only European country where marathons take place at the moment. We were happy to travel to Turku and finally run again. Turku Marathon is a very well organised race. The course is a flat fast course starting and finishing in downtown. Drinks were offered every 2-3km! Unfortunately we didn’t get any medal nor T-Shirt for Corona reasons, what we did not understand!

I´ve never been to Liverpool before and was surprised how beautiful this city is! Absolutely worth a weekend trip to run a half marathon there. The race was the last chance to run this spring as all other races in Europe have been cancelled due to Corona virus. Online registration was possible until Thursday 12pm. British runners get their numbers via mail, overseas runners collect their numbers easily before the race – all well organized. The course is nice and mostly flat. There is just one long and quite steep incline exactly after 1 mile for about 0.6 miles. The rest is flat and takes runners from the waterfront (really amazing) through the city to a huge park and then for the last 4 miles all along the coast. Unfortunately the weather was quite stormy and we had to struggle with heave head winds at the coast. The finish is at the waterfront where the race started. I absolutely loved the atmosphere at the finish zone and appreciated that everything was so easy. Runners put the bags into busses where they picked it up again (not good for valuables as the busses are open for anybody. All runners got a nice medal as well as a Finisher Shirt at the finish line. 3500 runners were registered but due to Corona only 2500 runners started and finished the race.

Frankfurt Half Marathon is still not one of my favorite races, but this year´s race was better than expected. The course has been changed in terms of the direction which leads to the result that the harder part is at the beginning instead of at the end. Also the atmosphere is better. The course is flat and as weather conditions were almost perfect (cloudy and 10 degrees celsius with a little headwind from km 11-15) it was good for running pbs. Finishing in the huge soccer stadium was amazing. Unfortunately runners still don´t get a medal even though it´s one of the biggest half marathon events in Germany with 8500 registered runners.

Seychelles Marathon is a well organised race starting at Beau Vallon on Mahé Island. Runners can choose between the distances 42/21/10/5k. This year 130 half and 70 full marathoners were registered. Race Pick Up took place in Victoria in the office of Seychelles Marathon and it was very personally and warm hearted. The course is extremely tough with elevation about 1000 meters. Scenery is beautiful as the course is all along the coast. As temperatures are around 30 degrees Celsius even in the morning and the humidity is extremely high, I would consider it as one of the hardest races I’ve ever run. All runners get a medal and a T-Shirt (different colours for different sizes). The finishers of the half/marathon also get a fresh coconut! 😃
