Frankfurt is a no nonsense marathon, it lacks in atmosphere and crowd support until the end, you run into the Messe hall and atmosphere here is very good. The quality of runner is very good, a deep field. Aid stations are plentiful but really get busy and can really trip you up if not careful. Like most European marathons the water comes in cups, really awkward. At 35.5k you pass the finish area and run back into the city, i found this section tough, alot of turns, too many really and difficult on tired legs especially the cobbled sections. Gels are available at stations but i didn’t take them as wasn’t familar with brand. T-shirt is 30 euro extra if you want it.

First time doing Frankfurt and i will be back. The quality of runner is really outstanding, so many sub 3 runners. The course is flat and the weather was excellent on the weekend i attended. You do a few sections a few times which is a slight drawback. Crowd support isn’t the loudest but i think that’s just the German way. The expo in the Messe was excellent, if you can make it on the Friday i would advise as when i went back again on Saturday the crowds were very big. The finish in the Festhalle is the best i have experienced.

The Frankfurt Marathon was my 1st international marathon, and was my last recorded sub 4 marathon, and my last Boston Qualifier (for my age division). The course was fast, and the course is the 2nd fastest in Germany (right behind Berlin). The Start and Finish line are close to the Official Host Hotel. The Expo is large and is also close to the Hotel – no more than 3-5 minute walking. There are plenty open areas next to the hotel where one can get some runs in leading up to the marathon. Plenty of liquids along the course. Crowd support is plenty. I highly recommend this event to all marathoners looking for an international run. The Finisher’s Medal and T-Shirt are nice.
