Winterthur is about 20km NE from Zurich and the second bigget town in the “Kanton” (district). The marathon was held in its 20th edition and is has a longer tradition than Zurich marathon.
There is a 10k, half and full as well as a relay option (the full is two rounds of the half). Start and finish is near the city center in the old Reithalle and I walked there within 15min from the main station. Locker rooms for man and woman are in the area as well as some vendors and snack bars. After about 3km in the city, the course takes the runners out into the beautyful nature around Winterthur. Winding and looping along a river and in the forest, most of the course was in the shade (and it was hot). Water, isotonics, sugary tea, sponges and fruits as well as gels (twice) were offered frequently. Sometimes, running felt very narrow and the forrest paths are not always flat (stones, roots etc). I really enjoyed running in nature.
All runners got an anniversary backpack. A medal had to be purchased on top/ was not included in the entry fee.

Winterthur Marathon was a very well organized and sympathetic race. You could choose between 10k, half, or full marathon. Full marathon start was at 9.00, relay at 9.15 and half at 9.30 am. The 10 k started later around 12.30. Winterthur is a small city in Switzerland very close to Zurich and even closer to Zurich airport which made it possible that I could take the early flight from Frankfurt to Zurich in the morning and then take the train to Winterthur which only takes 15 minutes. Another 15 minutes walk from the train station to the start which is at an old riding hall. Everything is extremely easy and comfortable. I got my start number within a minute, could leave my bag in the riding hall, special care for valuables, I even got my medal before I ran the race – that´s because runners could decide wether they wanna have a medal or not and they had to pay extra for the medal. Start was on time and weather was beautiful, but too warm. The course is nothing special to talk about. It´s mostly out of the city in the forests – quite beautiful. The first 15k are almost flat, but after 15k it goes uphill before it goes downhill towards the finish! All in all it´s a nice race and perfect for a “quickie”.
