London Marathon Events created The Big Half in 2018, in partnership with Sported, because we recognised that many of London’s running events didn’t truly reflect the communities they pass through. We want to change this by bringing Londoners of all backgrounds and abilities together in a celebration of the city’s diversity.
So while The Big Half features the some of the world’s best athletes – in the men’s, women’s and wheelchair elite fields – and thousands of mass participation runners taking on the same course, it’s much more than a half marathon. It’s a community running festival and everyone is invited!
The New Balance Big Relay is a great way to take on The Big Half as a team of family members, friends or work colleagues. It takes place on the same stunning central London course as The Big Half, from Tower Bridge to Cutty Sark, just split into four legs – so participants can soak up the fun and exciting atmosphere of the mass participation event without having to go the full distance!
The Big Mile is a FREE, fun, family-friendly mass participation event that takes place on the same finishing stretch as The Big Half, culminating at the iconic Cutty Sark. Because the route is only a mile long, it’s the perfect event for first-time runners or walkers, families with children of all ages and anyone looking to get more healthy and active – it’s also accessible to wheelchair users.

It was the first edition of London Big Half Marathon. Start took place at famous Tower Bridge and the finish was at Greenwich University. The course is mostly flat, but due to several parts of cobblestones it´s not as easy as I thought it would be. The atmosphere along the course is ok, but not very cheering as there are not many people in the streets of London´s east part. The best part of the course is at mile 7 when runners have to cross Tower Bridge in order to get to Greenwich. Every runner gets a T-Shirt and a medal, which are ok, but not really beautiful. All in all the race was ok, but there was one thing that really has to be improved: foreign runners did not have the chance to pick up race packages the day before the race. They had to pick up in the morning before the start. As there were only 2-3 people for the distribution of the race packages we had to stand in line for about 1 hour!!! Even though I arrived super early in the morning I had so much stress and no time to check my bag or to use the restroom. Very poor organization. 🙁
