As one of the “pure” half marathons in Germany, this fast and classic city race leads past numerous Hamburg tourist attractions and is the second biggest stand alone half marathon in Germany. The start … MORE

Hamburg half marathon is one of the biggest solo half marathon races in Germany. 12000 runners were registered to run the most beautiful course in the most beautiful city. This year weather conditions were very tough as it was sunny and super hot with temperatures in the mid-nineties which is absolutely not normal for Hamburg. Because of the weather only 8400 runners started of which only 8000 finished. Because of the 25th anniversary runners got a nice backpack! I love this race and I have already signed up for Hamburg Half 2020!

With over 12,000 registrants and 9,000plus finishers Hella Hamburg Half Marathon is one of the biggest half marathon races in Germany. With a growing numbers of runners, the organisers tried to ease out some flaws by changing the route and the finish area over the past years.
The small expo and bib number pick up was 2018 for the first time at the Hamburg fair where the runners also finish the race looking st Hamburgs TV Tower. The start remained on the Reeperbahn- the notorious red light and party district. The runners (no coral assignment but marked target times and pacers) where led to the the West first, coming down to the Harbour area and heading East- running along the “Landungsbrücken” looking at Hamburg’s new mayor tourist sight: the Elbphilharmonie. After that, a turn up north through a tunnel and along and through a residential area and a park before the course took you back south to the expo. Surprisingly to most runners, the course had some ups and downs and is not flat, but still fast unless you catch some head winds. This year it was rather warm- well July is summer season :). Water (water only) was provided every 2-2.5 km from km5 onwards, but beer and all kinds of lemonades, waters and isotonics from the main sponsor Hella plus beer from Erdinger were provided at the finish. In comparison to other city runs, I thought the price was fair with about 45€. Included in that was only the medal, tshirt had to be purchased seperately. Photos by the official photographers were about 7€/ piece.

Ok, I have written some reviews about Hamburg Half Marathon before and it still belongs to my absolute favorite races. Some slight changes have been done this year so that the race even got better! The expo takes place at the Hamburg fair and is bigger and better than before. Picking up the race package was very easy and fast. The course also changed a bit. The start at the famous Reeperbahn (Red Light District) is still the same, but at the end the course now takes runners to the beautiful river Alster and the finish is at the fair which is better than before as there is more space for the growing number of runners. This year around 12.000 runners were registered for the race. The weather was as beautiful as it can be which made the race an absolute fantastic event with thousands of spectators and many bands along the course! I once again fell in love with Hamburg Half Marathon!

Well, Hamburg Half Marathon is in my opinion one of the best ones in Germany and Europe. The course is flat and beautiful. Start is at Reeperbahn, the huge boulevard in the world famous red light district of Hamburg. After running 2 laps of 5 km runners pass by Landungsbrücken (at the harbour) and the beautiful Elbphilharmonie before getting closer to the main station and the river Alster. It´s a mostly flat course and good for pb. The atmosphere is fantastic! Come and run in the most beautiful city of Germany!
