Another of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Series events. This one is in Downtown San Jose and is a flat and fast course.
Packet pickup is at the nearby convention center.
Plenty of nearby parking garages, hotels, and dining options.
A little warm this year, but still an enjoyable race.
The optional heavy medals, and challenge medals make the series more fun.
Live entertainment on the course and a concert and beer garden await post race.
Generous time limit for the BOPers.

The Garry Bjorkland half shares its course with the second half of the Grandma’s marathon.
The half marathon starts 105 minutes before the full (giving the half time to mostly finish before the full), but that also means that half runners have to get up before ‘Disney early’. (3am for me). It is mandatory to take a bus to the half start. There are several sites to catch busses at.
This year they went to a 3 ‘corral’ system, and the ‘corrals’ filled up fast. Faster runners need to get to the start earlier to get a forward spot. Fortunately as a BOPer, it was easy to get in the back.
I loved the course. Gentle rollers with a net downhill, along the north shore of Lake Superior, back into Duluth. It could be a very fast course.
Packet pickup is held at the DECC. There is plenty of paid parking, and many vendors. There is also a pasta dinner available.
Also plenty of beautiful sightseeing in the area, whether permitting.

This race is put on my New Global Adventures, and is held in Santa Clarita, just across the freeway from Magic Mountain.
The race is help on the running/bike trails around the Santa Clara River. It provides a nice, safe route for the race.
The race starts early to try and beat the heat, but for BOPers, the heat can become an issue.
There were 6 aid stations spread out on the course.
The course has some nice scenery along the paths, and there is some shade (but not a lot.)
The medals are nice, and this race features a scoop of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream to all finishers.
This year there were a lot of last minute entries, and they ran out of finishers medals for the BOPers. They did give us a previous year’s medal, and will mail us this year’s medal when they get more made.
It was a fun race, and a good start to the father’s day weekend.

Rock ‘n Roll San Diego is a fun gem on my race calendar. You spend a weekend in San Diego, you run a net downhill course, and if you like a drink or 12, there is the mile 4-5.5 gauntlet of beverages available.
San Diego is not flat. There are plenty of rolling hills throughout the race, but there are not many killer hills. (The downhill at mile 9 is a steep one.)
Lodging can be a little pricey, so bring a friend and split the cost. Don’t need a car, so you can Uber or bus from the airport, and you can walk to most places around town, or take the trolley (light rail).
Pre-race choose your porta potty lines well. The ones near the back have long lines, while the ones near the front (by the low corral numbers,) have a lot shorter lines.
The half marathon course takes you from Balboa park, thru Hilcrest, North Park, back thru Balboa park and finishes downtown (near Little Italy).
The expo (and post race) is at Waterfront park. Parking is scarce, so walk, trolley, or FRED your way to and from the area.
Plenty of places to eat in the area, but you might want to get a reservation on race weekend. The Queenstown Public House is where we ate after the race this year.
For the more casual runner who wouldn’t mind a drink or two, there is fireball, tequila, beer, mimosas, tequila sunrise, and a myriad of other drinks (including a few made to order stops) in mile 4-5.5. Enjoy. I ran better after a shot or two. And of course there are plenty of official water and electrolyte stations on the course. This year, the featured electrolyte was Mortal Hydration.
This race offers something for the most serious runners, or the BOPers like me.

Another fantastic race by New Global Adventures.
Mother nature made the course extra tough this year (nothing NGA can do about that), and there were a couple hills on the back side that were absolutely brutal, especially for a larger runner. Trail shoes weren’t enough. I could have used 1″ cleats, or maybe snow shoes for some of that mud. (Like a slip and slide in many areas.) There were also 2 areas where the creek was flowing on the course (A chance to clean mud off the shoes), and many, many mud puddles, and muddy creeks to cross.
It was highly suggested to take the fire road back on the final 2 miles, due to the condition of the course.
Aid stations were well stocked, and staffed by excellent volunteers. Even some wine at the last 2 stations.
I’m told there was decent snacks at the finish, but as one of the BOPers, there wasn’t much left by the time I returned.
Shirt and medal are among the best in the industry. Reason alone to return.
VIP parking available for a fee, decent parking along the road near the race start.
Plenty of hotel choices within 15 minutes of race start.

As one of the 6 world majors, getting into the race is not easy. But the race now has charity entry spots making it easier to gain entry.
Expo packet pick up lines are long for certain groups (charity runners?), for other groups, short. Especially on day 1. If you want official branded merchandise get there when it opens and fight the crowd. There was >1hr wait to enter the merchandise area after packet pickup, and I arrived at the expo 30 min before it opened. (although I did get a slow line for packet p/u).
Race shirts are available for purchase, but are an extra cost, and the sizes run small. (Japanese 3x is more like a US XL)
No drinks (other than small boxed water) is allowed in the start area, so drink down before you arrive.
The corrals move efficiently to the start, but you are in a mass mob. It will carry you along for the first few miles before it begins to thin out.
The race course is pretty flat. There are a few rolling hills, but none are very high or long.
Course support is excellent! The aid stations are divided into 5 groups, based on the last digit of your bib number (but many runners couldn’t figure that out.) Pocari Sweat was the electrolyte of the race. Plenty of porta potties and restrooms along the way. The early ones can have lines of up to 20 minutes! (They list wait times at the entrance to the area.)
The cutoffs for the race are real. The second cutoff is probably the hardest for slower runners. Overall it is about a 14:15 pace (or so) to meet all of the cutoffs.)
The exit to the race is a little bit of a maze. You are routed out based on your bib color. So if you are meeting family or friends, figure out where you will be exiting, or meet up at the family area. (which I never found.)
Make sure you give yourself several more days post race to explore the city and/or country!! (I explored Tokyo and Osaka this trip.)

The Rotary Mission 10 races start and end at the mission in San Juan Bautista, CA. Packet pickup is race morning, and parking is along the local streets. The race is mostly out and back, with some challenging hills along the way.
The 2024 edition was not as BOP friendly as past years. The aid stations were no longer manned, but most still had water in cups available. The race shirt is a long sleeve tech tee, and this wear was the 40th anniversary.
If you like smaller races, I recommend this one.

The 20th edition of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona featured a new course for the half marathon and the 10k replaced the full marathon.
There are supposedly 53 legacy runners left, now that the marathon and half marathon legacy runners are combined.
The new course starts on Mill avenue, conveniently near a light rail stop, making travel to and from the race very easy. There are also nearby parking structures if you chose to drive in.
The course runs over the bridge, past the zoo, through Papago park and out into Scottsdale, before turning around on a parallel path back to Tempe town park.
Packet pickup is at the Phoenix convention center, which is also easily accessed via light rail.

Encinitas Turkey trot had its 10th edition in 2023.
A record crowd came out for this running.
Packet pickup was available on Tuesday and Wednesday for locals, and on race day (Thursday) for those of us coming in from out of town who couldn’t make the earlier pickup.
The race offered shirts in 3 different colors this year, but by race morning the choices were down to two colors, and only in sizes small or medium. A medium would never make it over my shoulders.
The race is now big enough to consider wave start – or continue to suffer weaving through strollers, walkers, and up to 6 wide groups for the first half of the race.
The race course is a beautiful out and back (5k) or looped course (10k) on the South Coast Hwy (101).
I think there were post race refreshments, but I couldn’t find them before I left to return to Thanksgiving festivities.
There are several good places to park for this event – if you don’t wait until the last moment to arrive.
I would still recommend this event, among several good race choices in Southern California on Thanksgiving.

For the first time in 20 years a portion of the 110 freeway was shut down for an event.

The race started and ended near light rail stations, so getting back and forth pre and post race was pretty easy. Located in South Pasadena, there were plenty of lodging options – especially when combined with the light rail.

Actually running on an LA freeway was a fantastic experience. We definitely were faster than rush hour traffic! We ran from Orange Grove St down to almost I-5.(26th ave)

Race shirt pickup – post race (if you couldn’t pick up the day before) was a total cluster… It took 45 minutes post race just to get the shirt.
They also ran out of medals at the end, but will be mailing medals to those who missed out.

The other side of the freeway was open to bicycles and there were walkers & fans along the course – a great time.

Hopefully this will happen again in the next 20 years.

If you have not done any trail hill training, this course will eat you alive. I speak from experience.
It is almost 14 miles, and very little flat. You’re either going up or down.
The course support is about as good as you can get, considering the remoteness of parts of the course. There is a 5 mile section where you will be glad you accepted the bottle of water at the last aid station.
The volunteers are wonderful, and the aid stations are well stocked.
The race crew is fantastic, and they make sure everyone gets back to the medals, food, and drink waiting at the finish.
Photographers along the course snap pictures, which the race gives you for free!
Probably the toughest race short of an Ultra in my life, and I’m looking forward to doing it again. (Hopefully my thighs will be on speaking terms with me in a few days.)

Unfortunately, this seems like a one and done for Rock ‘n’ Roll, but it was a beautiful event.
The elevation and hills on the course made it a tough first half of the race, but the beautiful views of the city made it worth it.
The aid stations were will stocked and manned, and the volunteer support was fantastic.
We ran by the Capital, The Salt Lake Cemetery, The University of Utah, and Liberty Park.
There was plenty of post race refreshments, a beer garden that offered a soft drink option, and a post race band.
Public transportation to/from the airport was easy, and if you had a vehicle, visiting the Great Salt Lake and Donut Falls were great side trips.

The Hell of a Half Marathon in Exeter, CA (near Visalia) is part of the Run the Valley Series.
This race lives up to its name. August in the valley is regularly 80+ degrees. This year we were lucky with a start in the mid 60’s, getting up to low 80s at the finish.
The course is a loop course with two big hills, each about 1 mile uphill (but returning back down). See profile picture attached.
The course support is fantastic. There are 11 aid stations on the course. They know it’s hot, so at many of the aid stations you can get a sponge full of ice water squeezed on you to help cool down. It feels sooooo good!
Post race is good. There is plenty of shade in the park, and breakfast burritos are available in addition to water and electrolyte drinks, and a beer garden.
Medals are fantastic, and the race offers free results stickers for the back of the medal to record your finish time.
I recommend this smaller race!

The inaugural Visalia Half Marathon was a good start to the Run the Velley series of half marathons.
The race was an out and back course that started and finished in Cutler park on the East side of town, along the St. Johns River. The course is flat, but the temperature creeps up as the race progresses. It does get warm. (or hot in some people’s opinion.)
The race runs along the St. John’s river, up to the Riverway Sports Park, before adventuring out on streets along the edge of farmland. There is some shade in the first (and last) part of the race, but until more of the trees mature, the middle part of the course is open and hot.
There are 4 aid stations (which you pass both ways), but you may want to grab more than 1 cup.
Good course support and outstanding volunteers.
Medal is nice, and so is the race shirt.
Post race includes breakfast burritos (with a vegetation option), chocolate milk, and beer. (in addition to water and sports drink).
It would be nice if the race started earlier – to avoid some of the heat, but that may be limited by the park opening time and permits.

Fun finale to the 2023 Springtime Surprise at Disney World. The race begins at EPCOT, running around the world, then heading along the water way to Hollywood Studios. The race then returns via the main roads back to EPCOT for a run thru the park, before finishing.
Early morning start helps with the temperatures, and still allows for many of the signature photo stops in Disney races.
Great course support for fluids (water and electrolyte drink), cheering cast members, and many photo ops.

I really enjoyed the course. It is mostly an out and back course, but the turn around is at 8.5 miles, so the return is much faster. (And that is great mentally).

The history, sights, and support on this race are fantastic. Running around the Cutty Sark, over Tower Bridge, past Big Ben and past Buckingham Palace make this race unforgettable. Amazing crowd support, even for the later waves. Public transportation in London, and free rides on race day make it easy to get around to the expo, and to/from the race. This race was a 6 loop race on a course set in High Point Park in Sussex, NJ. The course was paved the entire length.
We stayed in Milford, PA, and other options include Sussex, NJ, and Port Jervis, NY.
Easy packet pickup is available the morning of the race, or if you’re doing the series, the same bib is used each day.
There is a fantastic aid station at the start/finish with multiple types of food and beverage, and some form of hot food.

Early start is available for slower runners.

Normally this race is one of the high points of my calendar, but somehow they managed an epic blunder in 2022. The leaders took a wrong turn, executing the loop in the course backwards, resulting in the runners having to cross each other at the 0.4 mi / 1.7 mi point.
The 5k, 10k and half marathon all start together and separate along the way. After the initial problem, things seemed to return to their organized normal.
There is plenty of race day parking at the Laguna Hills Mall (where the race starts), and shuttles are provided post race. If you don’t want to wait for the shuttle, the start is about 1.5 miles from the finish – a nice little post race walk.
The post race “expo” returned in 2022 with booths, contests for the kids, and photo ops with the US Marines and their vehicles.
Packet pickup is available before the race, or the 2 prior days at the nearby Roadrunner Sports.
The finishers medal is nice, and there is a multi-year challenge available.

The Vista Strawberry run is held in conjunction with the Vista Strawberry Festival. The course starts and ends in the festival, and this creates some choke points during the run as you run between booths, and around novice runners who are looking at the booths.
The course itself is not too difficult, and once the runners spread out, pretty nice.
The medal is strawberry themed, and post race goodies include strawberries. You also get a free drink in the beer garden post race.
The festival provides plenty of shopping and eating opportunities after the race.
There is parking at the nearby civic center, and also parking further out with a free shuttle.
A nice community race!

The Clovis Memorial Run is a great little 5k to start off Memorial Day Weekend. It supports the Senior Center, and honors veterans and service members. There are also a kids run and seniors run.
Timing is effectively gun timed since all times start at the gun, not when you cross the start, but results are traced via bib chip.
The entry fee is very reasonable, and veterans run for free. There is a post race pancake breakfast included, and a post race raffle (1 free ticket with race, others can be purchased.)
The course starts and ends at the senior activities center and runs along the bike trail. There is one street crossing, which is controlled by police.
The post race breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, fruit and juice.
Some support the race and enjoy the fun of a smaller race.

Why not have a great, run filled weekend at Flying Pig?
The 3-Way with Extra Cheese Challenge has the Fifty West Mile on Friday night, the 10k and the 5k on Saturday, and the Half on Sunday. (The Full makes it a 4-way). 2023 will be the 25th anniversary of the full.
A well designed challenge, it is very doable. On Saturday, the 10k starts at 7, followed by the 5k at 9. Bag check on Saturday is provided for challenge participants so you can switch bibs and let them hold your medal while you complete the 5k.
The races start and end around the Bengals Stadium, and you can go the entire weekend without needing a car. The hotels in Covington leave you with about a 1-1.5 mile walk each way, so if you’re worried about the extra steps, pay the extra for a downtown hotel.
Nice post race goodie bags with snacks and drinks for a quick pick me up. (Free beer!) The post race area is down on the riverfront and features bands and more vendors.
You come home with a full suitcase of new shirts – one for each race and one for the challenge.
The expo is less than a mile from the stadium, has a lot of vendors, and some nice swag from sponsors P&G and Kroeger. They bundle all of your bibs for the challenge into one packet, BUT if you add the extra cheese (the mile run), then you have to stand in another line for that. (If you notice it…otherwise you can pick it up before the race like I had to.)
The courses are nice. The 1 miler basically does a loop around the football and baseball stadiums. The 5K is a nice little tour of the downtown & riverfront area. The 10K adds in 3 bridges as you also run thru Covington and Newport. The Half reverses the 10k course, then takes you up a real hill, where you are rewarded with a beautiful view of the Ohio river before returning back downhill to the stadium for the finish.
There is a reason this race it on many bucket lists. Add it to yours!!

A nice little tour of San Diego. The race starts and ends downtown in the Gaslamp district, near Petco Park. It is a loop course that starts along the water, goes around the airport, through Liberty Station, past MCRD, uphill to Hilcrest and Balboa Park, and back downhill to Gaslamp.
Nice medals, and shirts, although the shirt design was almost identical to last year’s shirt. Some finishers received the 2021 medal at the end of the race.
Nice post race refreshments. Also a free Dunkin Donut post race for runners. You are also in the Gaslamp district with many restaurant choices after the race.
Packet pickup at the Hilton Gaslamp, with convenient low price parking on packet pickup day.

2021 race moved the start /from the Fairplex to Bonelli park. The course had most of the previous race course, converted to a spiral out and back course.
The course markings were bad in the last two miles of the race, and there was some confusion among the slower runners.
Parking was poor, compared to the normal parking at the Fairplex, and the parking cost is still $12 (each day.)
The race does have extra gifts and rewards for participants who run 3+ consecutive years. (The Penguin club).
Some people complained that the course is more hilly than past years, which is true, but the hills are relatively short and very manageable. (And nicer scenery).
The shirt was also a change this year. The shirt fabric was a very nice relaxed cotton with a very soft feel (previously tech material), but was no longer their traditional Christmas sweater designs. Hopefully that will return.

This is a good challenging race to complete the Run The Valley series.
The race is a net downhill race, so you can expect fast times, but it does have some uphill parts in the first half of the race. It is a point to point race with shuttles from parking to the start, and from the finish back to parking.

The scenery is usually very beautiful, but the area is currently recovering from the recent fires. It is still pretty, just not at beautiful as it has been.
Date change to October is beneficial, as it’s cool at the start, but no snow on the course.
Good post race food, and free results info printed on a decal for the back of your medal.
Most hotels are about 45 min away in Clovis/Fresno, but worth the trip at least once.

Hell of a Half Marathon is held in Exeter, CA, just outside of Visalia. It is held in August, which puts the summer heat into play. In 2021, the race temps were in the high 80s (and the temperature keeps rising after the race!)

The course is a large loop. Out into the hills, over one large hill, and then head over a second hill on your way back.

Although the temps are hot, the aid stations have plenty to drink, trail race quality food choices, and they have ice water the volunteers will pour onto you if desired. Some of the best course support I’ve ever had at a race.

The race has plenty of parking near the start, race day packet pickup, and packet pickup is available in a couple different cities on the days prior to the race.

Post race entertainment, a good breakfast provided by the Kiwanis, and a beer garden are available, as well as post race massage and ice baths for your feet.

T-shirt or women’s tank for shirt options, and a beer/soda growler that can be filled for half price after the race.

Fun course, with a 3 hour time limit.
Free parking about 3/4 mile from the start. Finishes at Green Flash Brewery. (First beer is free!) Free shuttles back to parking.
First part of the course (along hwy 56) is slightly downhill, but the hills are lurking. Last third of the race has some good up and down hills.
Good course support. Race starts early enough to avoid the heat.
If you miss the cut times, you are advanced, not swept. (If you get the bump, let them take you to the top of the first hill – not mid hill like a friend did.)
Nice post race celebration, with good food available for purchase at the brewery.
Free race photos too.
I’ll be back!!!

Free street parking available if you get there early. Also you can take the trolley to the race.

The race starts on Harbor Drive, by the convention center and Petco Park and makes a nice loop around the city. You take Harbor Drive around downtown and over to a small loop on Harbor Island. You continue past the airport, and through Liberty Station. Next you pass MCRD, and begin the ascent to Hillcrest. You have a tough uphill at mile 9, up to Balboa park, but are rewarded with a downhill stretch to get you near the finish. (At the Gaslamp sign this year)

Post race was muted by the pandemic. You were given a bag with your medal and post race food.

Packet pickup was at the Hilton Gaslamp, and ran smooth. Plenty of cheap parking nearby on packet pickup day.

An annual event on my running calendar.
Usually hot temperatures, but we were lucky in 2021 – overcast day. Perfect running weather.
Hills, hills and more hills. Trail race around Vail Lake in Temecula California. Second half of the course is easier than the first.
Good race support, and great support from fellow runners.
RD is great, I hope he is back with the new company next year.
No post race party in 2021 (due to covid restrictions), but the post race party is another good reason to run this race.
Easy parking at race site – for a $10 day fee from the campground.
See you in 2022!

Early packet pickup available in different valley cities the week before the race, as well as easy race day packet pickup.
Course is mostly on trails & paved paths, so no traffic to deal with.
New section of packed dirt, loose dirt, and broken asphalt added before the hill to wear those legs out before the climb. Not a big fan of the change, but it’s not really that tough.
Good course support with well stocked aid stations.
Post race meal including breakfast burritos, fruit ice bars, and hard seltzer.
Free results sticker for the back of your medal.
Smaller event, but still a good size crowd. 900+ runners this year (2021).
Part of a 3 race ‘run the valley’ series.
See you next year!

There are lots of pre-race porta potties – if you know where to look. They did not do a good job of identifying the location, and the ‘holding pen’ for later waves, was nothing like the map implied.
Once the race started, it was very enjoyable. You start on the UN campus and run by some scenic buildings, before heading across town and past the Nebraska state capitol building. You run past Union College, and along a rec trail before returning back through neighborhoods, back through downtown and finishing back at the UN campus.
The race usually finishes inside Memorial Stadium (Nebraska Football), but this year we finished on the track due to construction. The National Guard provides excellent support, and there are also members out rucking the course.
Nice post race snacks and drinks.
Parking meters are free on race Sunday, and there are also plenty of parking garages and lots within reasonable walking distance of the start/finish.

Judgment Day was the first in-person race in Kern County since the pandemic hit. Only 325 in person participants (plus virtual runners) participated in this event, with a modified course for this year. The course was great with a lot of flat trails along the Kern river, and a large hill in the middle. I really enjoyed the course, and look forward to returning when normalcy is restored.
Good job with safety measures in this weird year. Masks required before and after the race (with disposable masks available), temperatures were checked before entry into the start/finish area was allowed. Rolling starts allowed minor separation of participants at the start, and plenty of space on the course.
