I actually had a WONDERFUL Time at this event but mainly due to the circumstances in which I came to be there. This 5k takes place at Imperial Beach – the finish point where the Silver Strand Half and 10 miler end (Those runs begin in Coronado). I decided to do the 5k run to cheer on my friend who was doing her first Half and drive her back to Coronado after. If you are in a similar situation it’s a great idea and a lot of fun. The last 3.1 miles of the Half are the same as the 5k so I was able to cheer her on at Mile 10 and the Finish.
So I had a good time celebrating with my friend – getting post race massages and drinking in the beer garden and enjoying the view from Imperial Beach Pier view.
So here is a view of the 5k as a separate entity: There’s not a lot to it. You are pretty much running through neighborhoods and you only get a brief view of the ocean at mile 2.75. Parking is only on residential streets so get there early (the run itself starts at 7am). My biggest gripe was the unorganized check -in where they didn’t give you your race T-Shirt until after the race even though the T-Shirt table was ready and they easily could have. They only figured out they had a box of goodie bags well after the 5K was over. The production of the 5K seems like a tacked on afterthought.
The expo itself wasn’t bad. I like the cause: Benefiting Challenged Athletes Foundation: Operation Rebound and there were some of the athletes out there running with you. The beer garden actually poured Sierra Nevada beer on a donation only basis – pretty cool!
The medal was cool and I received the same one as those poor souls that ran the Half!

Expect a nicely produced (KOZ knows how to put on a race) race with memorable hardware. The weather this year got a little hot, and the run along Hwy 75 can get monotonous. Music, drummers and the seahore helps, but it is a long 8 miles. Water stops every 1.5 mi was helpful, however no electrolytes until mile 9 ?? Definitely a flat course with just a little hill at mi 5. I have skated and/or run this course 7 times now and will contiue to return.
