Go prepared! Steady rolling hills. Although, the course for 2019 has changed and they eliminated the big hill and you start off going south first, which is a decline. Post race is awesome with free beer! and great swag like chocolate milk and free race mug. All in all, Super FUN community half marathon with loads of runners and spectators cheering you on the whole time. The views are breathtaking and they had African drummers, live music and otter pops along the way. Highly recommend. Great cause, too. Oh and oceanfront portos! Haha.

Came off a bad cold, wasn’t expecting to finish under 2:10 (slow for me). The “expo” was tiny, but friendly and quick. The start was walkable from motel, weather was great (pretty chilly) for a half. When I realized how many “rolling” hills there were, I was really prepared for an embarrassing finish time. The tiny/steep hill at the beginning was not the issue, but the long slight elevation changes were a surprise. Mile 11 was almost entirely uphill. However, what goes up, must come down, right? So, I ended up with a 2:04 finish; pretty good considering my speed work was in the toilet for a few weeks. Loved the mug, a nice touch. Medals just go in a box. I’ve already registered to run it in 2019. Recommend the Econolodge-you can walk to the start. Happy running.

Let’s get it out of the way, although the race website clearly says “mostly flat,” this is at best an embellishment of the truth. While it’s certainly not a brutal course, there are two very steep (but short) hills that you have to go up and down during the out and back portions of the race. The stretch along the coast is mostly rolling hills — nothing too dramatic, but not exactly “mostly flat” either. That being said, this is a very nice course, with exceptional swag — a high quality, well designed shirt, awesome medal, and a coffee mug. Parking is tricky, so give yourself plenty of time before the start to get yourself situated. All-in-all, a very worthwhile race, and heck, March in So Cal is always beautiful.

Pros: scenic course, nice shirt and medal, good crowd support and aid stations

Cons: parking! parking! parking! Lack of food at end. 🙁

Ok, as others have mentioned, race was advertised as “mostly flat” with a couple of short steep hills. True on the short steep hills but I wouldn’t describe this as a mostly flat course. Surf City is a ‘mostly flat’ course. This one is rolling hills. No question.

Being toward the back of pack, runners often get little to no food at the end. There was water and a banana. Super sad. I asked one of the volunteers where the food was, he didn’t know. I found this so odd that I emailed the race afterward; I received a very prompt and polite email that there was oatmeal and hot cocoa and four volunteers with big signs pointing to the food. Hmmm. Ok. Didn’t see any signs. Again, typical for back of pack. Volunteers … love ’em for what they do but often don’t keep things up for the entire race. And for a spring day at 10:30 am, hot cocoa doesn’t sound that great. Where’s the beer garden!?! 🙂

Last but not least, parking is all on street. They should consider leasing lots and/or shuttling from across the freeway. I felt really bad for the residents. Though the location and Moonlight beach is great!

Overall, I think they did a great job for an inaugural event and will certainly improve on a few things next year!

This was Encinitas’ inaugural half marathon. The course was advertised as “mostly flat” which was true, however the few hills were certainly challenging. They were steep, but short. The rest of the course was in deed – “mostly flat” 🙂 There was a great turn out for this first time race.

There were great views of the ocean along the course after the first four miles. It was enjoyable watching the surfers. There was also lots of people cheering on the runners pretty much the entire length of the course. I ran better than expected and finished with one of my top times.

There were numerous water stations on the route which is greatly appreciated! LOTS of port-a-potties at the start was also well planned out.

Parking was awful! I typically arrive one hour early to any race which I did for this race as well. It took me 30 minutes to find a place to park which ended up being about 1.5 miles away. Thank goodness for the plethora of port-a-potties, otherwise I probably still would have been in line for the bathroom by the time the race started.

I didn’t stick around for the post-race activities. The lines for the hot cocoa & oatmeal seemed really long and didn’t seem worth the wait.

I would run this race again, it was well organize, and well planned. Its always enjoyable running along the coast.

This was the inaugural Encinitas Half Marathon and I think the race producers will want to rethink describing the course as “mostly flat” with “rolling hills.” I felt like I was always running up hill! Granted, I had an Achilles injury that I’ve been rehabbing and couldn’t get the training in I wanted, but I found this course to much harder than I anticipated.

The first three miles there is no ocean view as the course takes you through the small business along coast highway. Heading into the 4th mile you finally reach the Self Realization Fellowship at Swamis and from here on out it’s along the coast. I enjoyed watching the surfers as I ran the race. I also really appreciated the numerous water and aid stations. I never felt like it was too long between them. And, since I didn’t hydrate well before the race, it turns out that I needed them a lot! The SWAG was fairly typical – but they didn’t have a gear bag(goodies came in a burlap sack). At the end there was a great souvenir mug, but I didn’t stick around to get it since I had to be somewhere after the race. I feel sad about that now!

Given that this was a first time race, I was impressed to see so many participants. Organizers told me they were expecting 5,000 people.

Parking was difficult. We had to park fairly far away even though we got there a half hour ahead of time. I recommend taking an Uber, Lyft, Cab, etc.

I will do this race again, but I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite. My hope for future years is that they attract more people to cheer on the runners since that’s a huge motivation for me! I hope that they also organize a shuttle to the start due to the parking probelm.

If its upto me, each city should have its own half marathon and 5ks. Nothing brings out people as community than races! I am glad Encinitas joins growing number of cities that are adding a signature race to their calendar! This was their inaugural race, and organized by same people that do the surfing madonna race. So the race directors knew what they were doing. The social media reach of this race was very well seen, as they constantly posted on fb and other digital social media about the course and swags. For an inaugural race, the course attracted about 4008 people. Its a pretty big crowd for a first year race! I also like that its just half marathon. There is a beauty in just a single distance. When I do races where they have 5k, half and full, a lot of time you are passing someone and you can’t tell if its good or bad. I have passed people that were walking from the earlier race which confuses me a lot. The course was advertised as ‘fast and flat’, but its more san diego flat, not OC flat. it was pretty h illy course if you ask me, and I struggled quite a bit. (if you are familiar with OC’s corona del mar scenic 5k course – its similar to that). The race swag was nothing out of ordinary. A nice shirt, a solid medal, and a cheesy marathon mug. I like it tho!

There were aid stations and water stations, wish there were few more of it.

All in all I like the race, and the course. I wouldnt cancel any other favorite race to add this to my list, but if you find yourself free during this race weekend – make it there! They also had a very liberal policy around transfers, ( to other people, and to future races etc). I respect and like that a lot about a race! YOu can tell they werent expecting that much crowd, coz their site went crashing the race night. Race results werent online until next day. But results were posted at the course if you took the time to check the printouts!
