This race is SO much fun. Maybe just because it’s a Disney race in general? I had never done a Disney race before and they do NOT disappoint. You start off running through both parks and it’s beautiful. And then you run through Anaheim and Angels Stadium, which is just so cool. There are tons of people cheering. They have high school bands out and dance teams and it’s just a really fun experience. I loved it. There was a hill at the end that felt like it went on forever, but it was manageable. I highly recommend this race.

Last production of this Disney race and it makes me wonder if they have reached the tipping point.
Typical clockwork Disney production. Loud hyping MC at the start and character photo ops throughout the park. As is the case with all Disneyland races, distances over 10k are run mostly outside of the park and the scenery and is bleh. Perhaps that is why the HM’s no longer sell out.
The entire course is quite flat. I would caution about entering any Disney race in hopes of a PB. They are meant to be fun runs with little pressure and it is a challenge avoiding jam spots and runners who are with friends and block the entire course while talking. On a hi note, the Disney medals are quite impressive mpressive!

I wanted to do this one since it will be the last Disney race on the West Coast…at least for a while. It wasn’t as crowded as other Disney races and the weather was perfect. The course is very easy and is almost entirely flat. My only complaint was that it did not have some of the course support that the Disneyland Half Marathon had. There were no classic cars out as we ran towards Angel Stadium and there wasn’t anyone from the ChEAR squad in the stadium. But overall, it was a great race and my new PR.

From the perspective of someone who isn’t necessarily into Disney and said I probably would never do a RunDisney event, I have to say … I LOVED this experience!

Caveat: I ran this as a pacer (otherwise, I would never pay what they charge for a half marathon). But I’m so glad I was able to participate since running thru the parks and especially around home plate at Angel Stadium was a fantastic experience.

The corrals were super organized, timely and entertaining. The entire course was exceptionally support and there was cheering and support pretty much the whole way. And lots of costumes. Lots!

Overall, a totally SUPER experience! I would consider doing the 10k on my own dime just to run thru the parks again. 🙂

Another wonderful Disney experience. I Usually run the 5k’s but opted for the 10K here and I was glad I did. The addition of timing and the ability to track you time on many platforms brought another dimension and elevated it to something more then a “Fun Run”.
The Expo at the Disneyland Hotel is always great (there’s a bar!) and you have the opportunity to purchase future RunDisney events at a reduced cost there (I purchased the Pixie Dust Challenge 10K & Half to go along with the 5K I already bought for that May 2017 weekend. Yikes!).
Event parking is in the Mickey and Friends garage and it’s a short walk to the startline at Disney Way. These events are early (starting exactly at 5:30am). People watching in your corral is a chance to see some inspired costumes.
The the first winds you guides you through the Grand Plaza of the Anaheim Convention Center and brings you back into Disney’s California Adventure where you spend Miles 2 & 3 running int and out of park and backstage areas. The only elevation loss and gain occurs between parks. Miles 4 & 5 are in Disneyland itself. While in both parks there plenty of photo ops with Marvel Superheroes if you want to wait in line and forget the PR.
Mile 6 brings you back home to the Downtown Disney area you started at where your name is called as you finish and get a great medal. Then it’s a chance to celebrate at the Finish line stage. Fun Times.
A tip about something recently added. I have a Disneyland Premium AP pass (or whatever they call it now) and ALL photos are free with my pass. They have plenty of photo ops so ham it up out there!

I did this as part of the weekend challenge. Run the 10K Saturday and the 1/2 on Sunday. Be prepared to PAY! The current pricing for a challenge weekend is $350. You get to run through the park for the entire race. They take the runners around the back of the parks which can be fun. Great medal and the cleanest porta-potties you’ll ever use! Once you leave the parks, about mile 4, run out and back to Angle stadium which isn’t a great view but fun to run on the field.

I chose this race as my first half marathon because princesses are not my thing. And I /loved/ it. I’m an Angels fan so running through Angels stadium was an extra treat. There are so many groups out there supporting you from the local high schools to cosplayers to people living in the neighborhoods.
The scenery, other than what’s in the park (first few miles) and through the stadium, is okay. It is basically running past businesses/ neighborhoods/ alongside the (empty) Santa Ana River Trail where it is pretty dusty. But the environment and camaraderie with the people while you’re running just made everything worth it, especially for a first-timer. There were the perfect amount of stops for water/ Gatorade/ restroom breaks.
The tech shirt is nice, long-sleeved with the big logo on the front. I also got the commemorative pin for my lanyard because I am one of those people. And the medal is fantastic. If you sign up for the challenge (10K & half) you don’t just get the challenge shirt – you get the 10K, half, and challenge shirts. I think this is such a great thing on their part.

I loved the medal after accomplishing this run. It was my first Avengers Half Marathon and the weather was great. At first it felt cold, but as soon as I began running, I warmed up. I was motivated to finish and it helped me to finish this run in a good amount of time. There was a variety of things to see from parts of Anaheim, the Angel Stadium, as well as inside parts of Disneyland and California Adventure. I thought it entertaining to see some of our favorite Marvel Avengers and other super heroes rooting us runners on. Overall the fun was a great race.

The spectators were all dressed up in costume, and so were almost all the runners. I love that the mile markers had the time on them.

I wish that the superheroes were available after the race, so you don’t lose time taking photos on the actual run. And the section through Anaheim was less scenic.

The race did not start on time, and the start time was super early in the morning. However, it was a fun run! But photo ops after the race would be way better than having them on the course.

BOTTOM LINE: For much of my childhood I ate, drank, breathed and slept Marvel Comics. And I greeted the announcement of the inaugural Avengers Super Heroes Half with wide-eyed enthusiasm. So I’m disappointed to say that after experiencing the race once, I have zero interest in running it again.

Yes, runDisney recently added their predictable enticement of an extra medal courtesy of their two-day “Infinity Gauntlet Challenge” (10K on Saturday, half marathon on Sunday). And yes, the race again will sell out faster than you can say “Ultron”. But my own enjoyment of the event derived almost entirely from seeing other runners in their full or partial superhero regalia, rather than from anything the runDisney folks did. So the folks in the home office have some major kinks to iron out here before I can recommend the race in good conscience to any but the most hardcore runDisney-ophile.

First, and speaking of “iron”, I don’t claim to understand licensing or film rights, but I do know Iron Man is a key member of the Avengers, as are the Hulk and Captain America. And yet Iron Man was conspicuously absent from the weekend’s activities, while the Hulk and Captain America appeared nowhere but on the cover of the official event guide. So Disney needs to untangle itself from Marvel’s restrictive licensing deals before this race can realize its potential and fully live up to the “Avengers” label. Until that happens, runners will have to be content with Thor, Hawkeye and Black Widow as the meager on-course Avengers representatives. Fans of the franchise know there’s a reason Hawkeye and the Black Widow don’t have their own movie franchises – they’re BORING.

Second, the course itself outside the parks – specifically miles 4-12 – is mind-numbing. Disney can create magic; it can make wishes come true; it can turn adults into kids, and kids into believers. Disney has the power to achieve a lot of things – but making Santa Ana, Garden Grove and the rest of Anaheim interesting ain’t one of them.

I thoroughly enjoyed January’s Walt Disney World Marathon in Florida and hope to return; on the other hand, I don’t anticipate running another SoCal Disney race. Tough to believe I’d recommend Florida over Southern California for any reason, but if you’re a runner eyeing your first runDisney race, and as long as you aren’t wed to either the Avengers or Star Wars, then set your sights on Florida. And if race distance is no object, then the WDW Marathon is a no-brainer.

PRODUCTION: I appreciate the fact that runDisney events attract a slew of unlikely runners and inspire loyalty among those runners, as only Disney can. And this year’s WDW Marathon was seamlessly orchestrated from start to finish. But the inaugural Avengers Half – and I never thought I’d say this about a Disney production – felt like a company going through the motions. Honestly, it felt like the folks at runDisney half-assed this race. Logistically the race went off smoothly enough, but when your reputation enables you to charge $195 for a half marathon while promising a “power-packed weekend of fantastic fun and amazing excitement”, you can’t half-ass ANYTHING. For $195, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. should be waiting to valet my car on race day.

Unfortunately runDisney has no qualms about wringing every last penny out of its customers. Case in point, the runDisney ChEAR Squad program (get it? EAR? Mickey?) lets spectators purchase silver, gold or platinum packages to gain “special access” inside Disneyland during the race and to reserve seating at the finish line. This, rather than apathy, was the reason the finish line bleachers were largely empty on race morning – friends & family had to pay to sit there! Spectators who smartly refused to pay were positioned behind barricades on the far side of the finish line, where the real crowds gathered.

Note to runDisney: feel free to charge the runners whatever registration fee you can command for your races, but leave the spectators alone. Better yet, if you were to offer a race-day Disneyland park discount to every registered runner, maybe you could access those spectators’ wallets without seeming so blatantly exploitative.

The high winds on race day certainly weren’t Disney’s fault (so much for my illusion of a climate-controlled dome…), and I’d like to see whether the finish-line festival becomes more festive without the overriding concern of booths, tents and the main stage blowing away at any moment.

And one other question, runDisney: why would I dedicate (at least) 20 minutes of my time to complete your anonymous post-race survey that no other runner will ever see, when I can post my review on RaceRaves.com where other runners (and race directors) will read and benefit from it? Maybe it’s time to ditch the anonymous survey in favor of a forum where runners can openly share their honest feedback? Your finishers are your best evangelists, so a little trust in them might go a long way…
