This is a very small race that starts and ends at Mission San Juan Bautista. In the past four years (2022-2025) it has received a dozen or so more half marathoners each year, so that is a good sign that it is being recognized for being a good quality event – 160 or so half marathoners in 2025.
This race is about 95% completely out and back. You start at the Mission, run along farmland roads, then up some pretty significant hills to a turnaround and then run your way back (and those hills become nice to fly down!). There is about 500′ elevation gain total in the course.
I’ve participated in this event 3X (2023-2025) and each year the medal has gotten slightly better! This year’s was quite nice. Decent quality long sleeve tech shirt offered each year, also.
My only “complaint” about this race would be the post race food. Bring your own! Since all proceeds go to benefit local scholarships and charities and they provide a great medal and shirt, I guess they skimp somewhere… every year it’s always been banana halves and some orange slices. That’s fine with me, I’d rather have the nice medal. 🙂
All in all I would recommend this race if you want a half to do in late January when there are not many options in California, for a good price, and offering some good, challenging hills to conquer.

The 2024 edition was not as BOP friendly as past years. The aid stations were no longer manned, but most still had water in cups available. The race shirt is a long sleeve tech tee, and this wear was the 40th anniversary.
If you like smaller races, I recommend this one.
Beautiful Scenery along the way!
