SPACEROCK: the final trail running frontier.
These are the voyages of trail runners around the world.
Your mission: to explore strange new trails, to seek out new life and new experiences, to boldly run where no one has run before.
Experience running the exotic trails and sights of the world-famous Vasquez Rocks Natural Park in Southern California. Known as the backdrop from popular TV shows and movies including Star Trek, The Flintstones, Battlestar Galactica, Planet of the Apes, and many classic western films. Now get a spectacular experience running the trails at the SPACEROCK Trail Race!
Vasquez Rocks feature unique rock formations, canyons, and terrain that feels like you are running on an alien planet. The trails provide a variety of technical terrain from packed dirt, sandy creek beds, rocks, and boulders as you traverse the course.
The 5K & 10K loop takes runners around the trails inside Vasquez Rocks with some moderate climbing and single-track trails. Ideal for first-timers, hikers, and those looking to elevate their trail running experience.
The 15K course provides a more intermediate to advanced runner challenge with a huge mountain climb, more single-track trails trails on PCT, and the black hole tunnel.
The Half Marathon+ course is considered one of the toughest in California with over 3200 feet of elevation gain & descent, and the total distance coming in just under 14 miles. A course that many trail runners consider an Ultra Half.

The events and staff organizer is ok? I think it needs more aid station in 5k specially after the stiff trail.
Needs more bathrooms, the waiting line becomes longer.
I loved this run.

I prepared months in advance for this race, but I wish I strengthened my quads more. The incline was way beyond my expectations. The race was beautiful, though. I’m running through dirt, rocks, creeks, roots, and bushes while staring at breathtaking scenery. I would love to finish this race again and beat my previous performance.

This time is my second to worst time on this race, however, in my defense this year we had a new course for the 10k. It’s HARD! If you want a challenge in beautiful scenery maybe start out with the 5k distance. But if you’re like me, you may enjoy the new distance which was added just this year: 15k. It gives you a chance to challenge yourself just a little bit more without have to go over twice your normal distance (half marathon.)
I am considering that distance for next time. . . but we’ll see.
If you are sitting on the fence about it – just sign up! The people are super nice. It’s the best swag on earth. Lots of people dress up. Nobody says you have to run, you can bring your poles and do this like a long hike, a slow jog, a walk – whatever you want. At the end you get free photos of yourself, the best tee shirt (people always want to know where I got it when I wear my SpaceRock shirts) and an entirely amazing sense of accomplishment. I am a terrible athlete but doing this every year makes me feel awesome!
Things to know for the best experience: if possible carpool. This location isn’t close to anything and parking space is limited. If offered, pay for the VIP parking, we did and it made our lives so much easier. In the future it may sell out, but the day we ran it looked like some people were still chancing it with the less expensive parking. If you do chose to park at the lot down the road there is a bus to transport you to the trail head, so don’t worry. This race is Very Well Organized. The volunteers are the best.
Some years there is an optional untimed practice run. If this opportunity is offered jump on it. It’s a nice way to make sure you know the course. This year I was slow so I was never by my self, but I did run into other people who had gotten themselves off course which effected their times. Ultimately though, this is not a race where you are running to to make the best time because it’s a trail race and circumstances like weather can really effect you. Run it for fun!
J hope to see you there. Watch out for Gorns

Prepare yourself to run a course like no other and you will be left with a feeling of accomplishment when you cross that finish line. The swag was pretty awesome, love the medal, but still waiting on the swag bag, itself, to be mailed to me. Production was smooth on race day, before and after the race. This is a race I would seriously consider running again.

This race was challenging for me because I didn’t really train on trails. But I will definitely be back next year! I will make sure to train for it. The volunteers were the best! They had great snacks and were very encouraging. The views were out of this world at Vasquez Rocks. I loved the medal and the shirt, as well as the pink bag they gave us. Was sore for days, but so proud of myself for not giving up. Can’t wait for next year!
Scenic and challenging

The races started on time and there were plenty of volunteers to assist with getting the runners to where they needed to be on race day AND pick up the day before.
A little bummed that when I signed up, the parking was $5, yet became $10 by race day. 🤔
Overall, a nice experience, which I was looking for.

The course is phenomenal and challenging, yet breathtaking in every sense of the word. Definitely need to train for the elevation so that the climbs are just par for the course. The terrain is like no other and the rock formations are one of a kind. Would have liked more port-a-potties at the start line to ensure the lines went quickly so as not to miss the start of the race even though we arrived with ample time. The aid stations were mainly still stocked when I passed by, and the volunteers were amazing with their dance moves and willingness to fill my water bladder. I loved the pickle juice that I spied with my little eye. Going through the tunnel twice is always a unique experience. After the race someone aske me if I would register for next year and I retorted, “Ask me in a week”. A week later, I registered.

This was my very first trail run with my daughter and son-in-law – #Team Shardana! It’s no surprise that this trail is in the shape of a heart as I was super encouraged by an enthusiastic race crew, energizing aid stations, and supportive participants! I do need to work on strengthening my hamstring muscles for those upper portions of the uphill sections, but I can’t wait to come back next year!🥰Maybe I’ll try the half marathon.🤔🏃🏽♀️💞SPACEROCK Rocks!👍🏽🎉

I have participated in every Spacerock from the very beginning, and I have always loved it! (I can only speak to the 5k, as that’s the only distance I’ve raced.) Overall, I love the environment, the vibe, and the people! The race organizers pretty much have this down to a science. However, there were just a couple of hiccups. The 5k course is fairly well marked, but while I was waiting for my son to finish the half marathon after I’d finished my race, I noticed there were quite a few people running the longer distances who had taken a wrong turn towards the end of the course. (Luckily, my son wasn’t one of them.) I ended up directing some of those runners toward the finish for a little while. The other hiccup was with the swag bags. Instead of handing them out during packet pickup, they were handed out on the day of the race. There was some communications breakdown between the race organizers and participants resulting in people who were registering last minute getting bags while people who had registered ahead of time did not get theirs (my son and myself included). To me, that just didn’t make any sense. On the bright side, the organizers were very apologetic and sent out an email explaining (partially) why and how that happened, and that swag bags would be mailed to those who didn’t get them. On the one hand, it’s not a big deal. But on the other hand, considering how much race entry costs, I’d definitely like the swag! My only other criticism is that at that finish, they ran out of the electrolyte sports drink. They did have plenty of water, but when my son finished his race, he really was hoping for a sports drink. We ended up walking back to an aid station on our way out so he could get some.
Other than those hiccups, the race was well organized. I enjoyed myself and look forward to next year’s race!
ps – One of the things the organizers do is put on a course preview run. My son and I weren’t able to make this year’s, but we attended the previous year’s. I think it’s a fantastic thing and hope the organizers continue to have preview runs. The other thing I love is all the free race photos! Those are always fun to look at!
