It’s easy to kind of phone this race in if you’re only doing the 5K or 10K, but if you’re a novice trail runner, don’t expect an easy transition up from the shorter distance to the half-marathon — that back half is monstrous! In a good way, of course, especially if you’re the kind of trail runner who gets off on a little bit of pain for bragging rights. Count on a slow trudge up three massive hills (with the ensuing downhills and views to provide some salve), but if you’re prepared, (which I wasn’t, really), you’ll be fine. I’ve run enough long trail races that I depended on muscle memory to power me through, but next time, I’ll respect the course.

Everything about this race was fantastic and look forward to racing it again. However, I wish the event organizers had awards for age groups (like a few of my other races and I would glad pay a higher entry fee to cover it) and a 10k trail that was an actual loop instead of doubling back part of the way. Doubling back created treacherous conditions from opposing racers.

This is my 2nd year running SpaceRock. Last year I did the 10K, this year I wanted to challenge myself, get out of my comfort zone and this race did just that! The half was very challenging, with never ending hills and the scenery was the cherry on top.
The volunteers were very helpful and encouraging with lots of goodies.( Thank you volunteers!) The swag was amazing! Very well organized.
I can’t wait for next year

I would definitely recommend this race to my friends. We had about 20 members of the Foothill Flyers Running Club participate this year it is a must do team event. The aid stations are wonderful, the volunteers arguably even better. At the finish line, there are home made chocolate chip cookies and homemade eggrolls! The shirts are awesome and outer space themed. The metals are large and creatively done. The course winds through the beautiful state park and makes you feel like you’re on the set for Star Trek movie. The course has quite a bit of singletrack trail, so you need to be polite and Jim to the runners on their way back. My one suggestion would be that the race director give some directions on course etiquette to newer trail runners before the race. The runners were friendly and encouraging. What a wonderful vibe.
    I had a wonderful time..

This course is incredibly challenging. Not just the inclines, but it gets narrow and it’s out and back. I’m a solid turtle, so I tried to “pull over” for the faster runners on their way back, but it’s still really narrow. The energy and support on course however, is freaking amazing. It’s like taking a party on a hike.

The course was a beautiful challenge with hill after glorious hill, and what’s that at the last two miles…more hills! Not an easy course, but a course that will make that finish line seem glorious, and once finishing, you know you have accomplished something.

The course is quite challenging not just for its uphills and downhills. There are about 2.5k on a narrow switchback with only room from one. We try to be considerate of the gold star runners by giving them the wide berth, but this means if you aren’t racing to win, it’s not a race where you’ll get an awesome time. You spend too much of it letting people pass.
That said, a nicer group of people you’ll never met. Everyone is encouraging. The scenery is fantastic, like running on an alien planet. The support staff is super duper supportive. They arrange parking and shuttle buses, but even so if you can car pool that would be better because parking is limited.
For myself I was running 5 days before my cancer surgery; I had not expected to finish. In my practice runs I had made only 8k and 6k respectively. And this from a person who used to regularly run 11 and 12k! I was very much encouraged by my running partner, and by another runner we met that day who was dressed up as Captain Kirk. I surprised myself by finishing, although it was grueling I felt a sense of accomplishment I rank “personal best” not for speed but for pluck.

This was a challenging race… but I truly loved it!.. love how I can mentally overcome the challenge and I am not comparing myself to others or feel pressure to compete!. I loved and embraced every beautiful and hilly mile! The medal is truly out of this world! Big and it is beautiful on both sides! Love the venue! Well organized and you truly feel like you’re with family! I feel welcomed and valued by the race directors! Love that they are hands on and humble!! This is a tough one so come prepared. Be ready to run over rocks throughout the course, have tread on your shoes, water with you, and enjoy lots of hills. I wish there was one more aid station for the 10k because my throats and lungs were DRY, but overall it was a challenging and fulfilling run. The Star Trek theming was fun and the swag is awesome.

I LOVE the technicality of the run – exotic! Would love to have it start a little later since we are just under 2 hours away, too close for a motel, too far to stay awake on the drive – but WORTH it! I love the festivities, the quality aid station volunteers, and the unique running experience.

It was a blast to participate in the inaugural SPACEROCK Trail Race held at Vasquez Rocks. This was a challenging event, but very rewarding. Trail races by nature feature unique terrain…and hills are a part of that. Just when I thought I was done with the hills, there was another hill. That’s okay…hills make me stronger.

I wanted to get there early and experience it all. The morning was overcast, so there was not a typical sunrise. It was great to get there before dawn though, in the dark, to take in Sunday morning at this iconic location.

New Global Adventures did an awesome job producing this event. There were challenges that ranged from creating a race in this iconic location that is overseen by LA County (dealing with them must be fun), to facilitating parking and shuttle busses. They also produce other local events and at spectacular locations in China. It’s clear they know how to do things right.

The trail has plenty of difficulty for everyone but it is also friendly for beginners. Views are great and the aid stations were very well stock and also had volunteers that will give you extra boost in case you are low on it. Cant wait to do this race again next year.
