The La Jolla Half Marathon is one of San Diego’s most picturesque and iconic point-to-point races. This premier event invites runners to experience a world-class coastal route, starting at the Del Mar Fairgrounds and winding through the most beautiful stretches of the Southern California coastline to a historic finish at La Jolla Cove.
Imagine miles of sun-drenched coast, an inviting ocean, perfect weather, and thousands of inspired runners. Whether you are looking to conquer the legendary Torrey Pines climb or seeking a fast, downhill personal best, these races offer the very best of San Diego running.
The Courses
La Jolla Half Marathon: The signature event of the weekend. The course follows a scenic coastal route along the San Diego coast before reaching the race’s crown jewel: the challenging 400-foot climb to the summit of Torrey Pines State Park. After conquering the hill, runners roll across the Torrey Pines mesa, descend through the beautiful residential streets of La Jolla Shores, and finish at the scenic La Jolla Cove.
10K: “All the Views, None of the Hill” Designed for those who want a world-class coastal experience without the legendary Torrey Pines climb.
- The Route: This course begins at the summit of the mesa (exactly where the Half Marathon climbing ends) to offer a fast, net-downhill journey.
- The Experience: 10K runners enjoy the final 6.2 miles of the Half Marathon course on fresh legs, bypassing the 400-foot elevation gain while still running through the heart of La Jolla Shores and along the Pacific coastline to the Cove.
5K: A shorter, high-energy option that doesn’t skimp on the scenery.
- The Route: This mostly downhill course features the most breathtaking views of the final 3.1 miles of the Half Marathon route.
- The Experience: Ideal for anyone looking to soak up the iconic coastline and “soak in” the sunshine in a fast, manageable distance.
Race Highlights:
- Point-to-Point Prestige: All distances offer a unique journey ending at the historic La Jolla Cove.
- Premium Swag: Every participant receives a collectible dry-tech race shirt, a commemorative finisher medal, and tote bag to hold their running gear.
- Finish Line Festival: Celebrate your achievement at Ellen Browning Scripps Park with a high-energy festival featuring live DJs, food, drinks, vendors selling the latest running gear, and oceanfront views.
- Runner Recovery: Runners have access to a dedicated recovery zone featuring free sports massages, stretching, cupping therapy, tens, and more.
- Post-Race Beer Garden: Participants (ages 21+) are invited to the beer garden to enjoy a complimentary brew while soaking in the sun-drenched coastal scenery with their loved ones.
- Run for a Cause: Your participation supports the La Jolla Kiwanis Foundation, benefiting local children and community programs.

The La Jolla Half Marathon can be summed up in one word: hills. Even the race director said it best: “It’s one big hill, just get over it.” With roughly 900 feet of elevation gain, this is definitely not the course to choose if you’re chasing a PR. It’s a challenging route that demands patience and smart pacing from start to finish.
What keeps runners coming back year after year is the scenery. This is easily one of the most picturesque half marathons out there, with stunning views of the La Jolla coastline and beaches throughout the course. The ocean views help distract from the climbing and make the suffering feel worthwhile.
One thing the race absolutely gets right is on-course support. Water and aid stations were available nearly every mile, which was greatly appreciated given the difficulty of the course. Volunteers were consistently friendly, helpful, and encouraging throughout the event.
This year, however, the biggest issue was the shuttle bus system. The buses did not have a dedicated route and ended up stuck in the same traffic as everyone else trying to get to the start line. Even after arriving at the recommended 4 AM time, we still ended up late to the event. The buses themselves were at least comfortable and air-conditioned, but the transportation logistics definitely need improvement.
Crowd support was present along the course but fairly limited overall, with most of the energy and spectators concentrated near the finish line. Thankfully, the post-race atmosphere made up for it. The beer garden was one of the highlights of the entire event and created a great environment for runners, friends, and family to relax and celebrate together afterward.
Overall, I’d recommend this race if you’re visiting town and looking for a beautiful but demanding challenge. It’s tough, scenic, and memorable — just don’t expect an easy day on the legs.

Signed up last minute after needing to defer another half marathon I was signed up for and decided to run their new 10k. The course was great, the hills made it just challenging enough and the views were amazing along the coast. Nice medal and set up at the finish line with water, snacks, etc. Loved the reusable cup for water (or traditional cups for those that wanted) and the post-race party was one of the better I’ve been to in a while with food, several drink options, lots of places to sit and of course then there’s those views! They even had a variety of vendors both for packet pickup and for the post-race finish area. They could use some better signage or perhaps a few more volunteers to help with packet pickup as a lot of runners were standing in the wrong line(s) and didn’t love the shirt design/fit (rarely do though) but honestly even those issues are so minor! Oh, and though I didn’t need to change distances, defer, or anything else I have to give them a BIG SHOUT OUT for how flexible they are at a time when most races seem to make it impossible for you to make any changes without paying a LOT of extra money (or if at all). For just about anything you can think of their response is “yes!” Hope they keep the 10k – would love to run it again!

I flew into this race from the East Coast for literally 24 hours. I elected to stay about 25 minutes away at a Hilton in Delmar because it was considerably less expensive than staying in La Jolla. I will say that parking to pick up the bib the day before was problematic. It took a long time to find a place to park, but I was able to pick up my bib successfully. Unfortunately, I had a fever of 102 on this day so that color things a bit. It was a really beautiful course however that hill in Torrey Pines while stunningly beautiful did send my heart rate pretty high and I decided to walk that hill. It certainly wasn’t my best time, but it was one of the most beautiful race courses. The course is mostly open, but it did seem very well supported. I would recommend this race.
I highly recommend this event!

This was my first Half Marathon and first Race in San Diego CA. Traveled from Arizona and was so impressed by how organized the Expo and the Race were! Loved the ocean views and the breeze that morning! Mile 6 was the hardest as it goes up Torrey Pines but the views right after that hill are worth it! the course is definitely not beginner friendly as there are a series of prolonged elevation and downhill portions (downhill was harder in my opinion!). For someone who didn’t have access to hills during training, it was difficult to prepare for this, but definitely strength training in the gym (squats, lunges, deadlifts) has helped me overcome those moments. So i definitely recommend incorporating strength training. I did the race with my two other cousins which was also their first time doing a half marathon, and we all enjoyed it. It was challenging physically and mentally, but totally worth it. I would do it again, and better prepare myself.

Well supported race with the epitome of ‘scenic’ descriptors. Point-to-point race finishing by the sea. The race shirts have some of my favorites designs. and are keepers, not wear-once-and-toss. I highly recommend this beautiful race.

I have not run a huge number of different half marathons, but the views of the La Jolla Half Marathon are amazing. From climbing the challenging Torrey Pines hill to the declines with views of La Jolla cove, the run really is beautiful. You will see amazing homes on the run and a decent amount of the Del Mar and La Jolla communities coming out to support the runners.

The aid stations are self serve though, not optimal for runners trying to get a PR. You have to carry your own cup the whole race.

This course is hilly and difficult but worth it! Great scenery, course profile is varied enough to keep you engaged the whole way. Huge climb around mile 6, huge downhill around mile 10, and don’t forget about the last bump in mile 12! Finishes gently downhill into La Jolla Cove. So pretty! I like to park at the finish in the morning and take the bus to the start, have to get there earlier but makes it easier when you’re done to take your time in La Jolla and get some coffee or watch the sea lions

This is the most scenic half marathon I have done (6 times and counting), coastal beauty. The weather is absolutely perfect (cool and overcast) I love that they have gone cupless, considering how much waste is generated with all of the disposable cups. It’s definitely challenging with a 400+ foot climb in the middle (probably the hardest road half marathon I have ever done), but so worthwhile. I also love that they have moved to Saturdays so that I have the rest of the weekend to enjoy. Price is very reasonable with pre-sale. I’ll be keeping up my annual streak!

This race is gorgeous! It’s also very well-organized and the swag is excellent. There were people cheering us on pretty much the entire way, which was motivating and sweet. It is a bigger race—there were a lot of runners, but I enjoy races with lots of people running. This is not a cushy flat course. It has 4-5 large and steep hills and many smaller rolling ones. You can’t beat the views though. I seriously teared up! Gorgeous!

This is a tough race with some pretty brutal hills. However, the views are incredible and atmosphere is top notch. The early start time (6:30am) does mean an extra early morning, but well worth it. You feel accomplished going into the weekend and it’s a Saturday instead of Sunday race.
