The course was beautiful and runs from Napa into downtown Sonoma. There’s not a lot of participants (about 3000?) so no issues of overcrowded roads. One caveat is that the 5k runners started much later and merged right about the time when the lead pack of the half marathon runners had about 2 miles left which led to a crowded race course. The course wasn’t overly challenging – it had a big hill on first mile, but mostly gentle rollers for the remainder. I finished 21st overall (1st in 50-54 age group) and all age group podium winners got a bottle of wine. After party was fantastic – plenty of wine tasting!

Do not sleep on this race. Yes the hype is worth it. Wine along the course is fun, but even beyond that it is incredibly beautiful, the rolling hills make for an easy run, and the support at the end is stellar! Once you finish, the wine festival in Sonoma is a total blast with runners and non-runners enjoying the wine and sunshine. Book your hotel far in advance but definitely worth the planning!

I’d been wanting to run this race for years, so expectations were high. And the scenery didn’t disappoint! I also quite liked the course, which starts out with rolling hills, and ends flat. Certainly downhill overall. Many of the roads are in poor repair, and prime for ankle sprains. However, with growing up in Nova Scotia and living in Quebec, they didn’t bother me.

Being a countryside run, the lack of spectator support could be expected. But I was disappointed the race organizers put up mile markers and called it a day. Motivational signage of some sort would have been appreciated.

The Nuun along course made many runners nauseated. Should definitely change that up. Facilities were impressively plentiful along route. I was pleased they had gels at one rest stop, but they should also offer natural items, like orange or banana slices. The volunteer kids at the water stops were a huge highlight.

My absolute favourite moment was hanging with the llamas next to the course. There was even a baby one!

We were quite disappointed there was no race bag at the expo. We saw a few people with them. So they may have been a VIP perk. But at $180 an entry, that’s ridiculous.

Be prepared to get up early, walk a ways from the parking to the shuttle (with no signage or markings), and to get dropped off further away after the race (which was not as indicated.) The race map left a great deal to be desired. So you had to scour the website for information. The volunteers knew next to nothing.

The post-race had some good fuel, and a lot of long lines for small tastings of local wines. The souvenir glass was nice and I’ll certainly use it again.

As this is the 12th consecutive year this race has sold out, the organizers know they can just phone it in. And, to a large extent, they do. I won’t be back. But I still enjoyed my experience overall, and would recommend it on that basis.

Had never been to Wine Country and thought this would be a great way to see some of it. The scenery did not disappoint. Many other facets of this race did though. For starters, at $180, I would have thought they would provide runners with a lousy plastic bag to put your bib and t-shirt in when you collect them at the Expo, like pretty much all other races do. Next, had to ask a few questions of staff at the Expo, they looked at me like a deer in the headlights. Lame and unprofessional.
A great deal of the course featured roads that were unwalkable, let alone fit for running on. They were patched and pocked everywhere and just an accident waiting to happen. How does a race organization justify mapping out a race course on such hazardous roads? It was absolutely scary . I live in the Northeast and not even after our harshest winters have I seen roads this bad.
Then, after the race, for the privilege of waiting in line for an hour, you get a lousy wineglass. Just what runners want to do after running 13+ miles, is stand in lines. The organizational nightmare of how this was done is beyond words. Surely there are more efficient ways to get the glasses to the runners, even if at the Expo on Saturday. Finally after almost an hour of waiting, a volunteer came out into the lines with wristbands, asking runners if they were 21. Why wasn’t this done from the get-go? And what if, like me, you had no intention of drinking there? Why no separate location for non-drinkers that day to get our glass? There should have been many more volunteers involved with this process. Ridiculous and a total fail. For $180, we should have been served on a silver platter!!
And yes, we all have different tastes when it comes to the t-shirt, but I thought it was pretty lame.
I am sure this race will continue to sell out each year but please think twice before plunking down this kind of money for such a sub-par event. If most of the proceeds go to charity, that is one thing, but I couldn’t even tell you if it does or not. Didn’t see any evidence that it does.

I was able to get my wine glass but my friends had to wait 45 minutes + for theirs. The wine was delicious and I loved that we finished in a nice area where we could walk grab brunch. Overall, beautiful race, and I would love to do it again, though I’m from Maine, so it’s a long trek!

I sent the medal home in the mail because the corkscrew on it made it iffy for TSA – but it’s super cute.

FIRST HILL IS A DOOZY but the rest of the race is absolutely wonderful with rolling hills. The water stations were PERFECTLY spaced, and run really well. The last two miles are almost straight downhill so that made for a great finish.

Loved it. And the t-shirt is awesome!!! Love the color and material!

The course was good, although the road was very uneven and had a lot of pot holes.
The race had no t-shirts in my desired size and one will have to be mailed. Granted they gave me 40% a future race, but it has to be within this year. After finishing the race this event somehow ran out of wine glasses. We stood in line for 45 minutes and they had no idea when the glasses would arrive. At least they didn’t run out of water like they did last year.

A relatively easy and peaceful half marathon, this route winds past vineyards along roads that have been closed down (no running on the shoulders of busy roads!). Be warned- transportation was a bit complicated and the staging area wasn’t the greatest. I was particularly impressed with the event’s email game- frequent and including all the important details.

Do you like a race where you aren’t dodging cars, there are plenty of restrooms provided, where there is medical assistance throughout the course, or where you get a bottle of water after you finish? Well, then this race is NOT for you. I think the cars and the restrooms were the biggest frustration for me. It cost me at least 15 minutes just waiting to go on the course and that’s after I waited for 6 miles hoping the lines would get shorter. Also, the cars speeding by without anyone to direct them and they were coming onto the course, NOT GOOD. This isn’t really a closed course. Which is funny because they started 15 minutes late because of “cars on the course”.

They ran out of water bottles and wine glasses at the finish. I had to wait at least 30 minutes for the wine glass and then waited in lines for the wine. They were also giving half marathon medals to 5k finishers. I guess they ran out of 5k medals. Not fun when you run over 4 times the distance and get the same medal.

I stayed at a partnered hotel and the shuttle service actually worked out great once I got past all the confusion of if it would even get me back to my hotel. I still don’t know what the timing was so I raced out of the post-race event so I would get stuck so far away from my hotel (that would have been a $50 uber).

Although there is no real course information except a roadmap, you can guess it was going to be hilly. It was an elevation of 495 ft according to my Nike Run App. That’s pretty hilly.

The course was beautiful and people did seem to be having fun. The medal is cute. If this ran at all smoothly I would recommend it for the location but as is I don’t think it’s worth it. Just run around Napa on your own and save the cash.

Brittany, thanks for the thoughtful review! I'm disappointed for you and your fellow runners that the race itself didn't live up to expectations this year, but feedback like yours will be all-important in helping the organizers step up and avoid the same mistakes next year. Hopefully their Healdsburg race in October will be its usual excellent self, and if you haven't run that one I'd recommend it — like you I'm a big Disney fan, and my lasting memory of that race is the group of friends all running in Incredibles costumes, pretty awesome. Thanks again for the honest review, and I'm excited to follow your other racing adventures here on RaceRaves! LESS

So my husband and I planned our honeymoon around when then race would take place. See we are trying to pick up more state. And hell we love wine.

We waited in line to get a wine glass for over 30 mins. To be handed a small clear cup saying they are out of wine glass. Come back later. Very disappointing.

We had our flight back home to our family all planned out. We would wear our race shirts. Guess what? I didn’t even get one. At expo they had no XL shirts. They will be mailing.

For a race you pay this amount of money for. These things are unacceptable!!!

Good mix of runners and signed up because of the wine tasting at the end. Views were boring, you’ve seen one vineyard, you’ve seen them all. Worst aspects, they made you stop multiple times for traffic. No point in having this as a competitive run or even practice. They ran out of the commemorative wine glasses for the runners even tho the swag included this. Many runners left without this after waiting for more than 30 minutes. They provided cheap cotton tshirts, for the price you pay, you’d expect dry wicking fabric. Food selection was few and far between after the run, the expo was weak, hardly any running related or athletics related vendors. Starbucks is nice, but how does it relate to running or healthy habits? Workers were annoyed, yes runners are mad cause you couldn’t match the number of glasses to the number of participants. Another runner who did this run last year told us they were given a swag bag last year, but only provided it to the VIPs this year. Should have released people in waves, took almost two miles to get around slower runners. Not worth it.

Truly one of those ‘bucket list’ races. Thanks to the awesome pre and post race activities – Destination Races not only promises a great running experience but always and unforgettable day. We are from Vancouver, Canada and flew down for the second year to the Napa-to-Sonoma. This year was unusually HOT (Low 80s by mid-morning) which made for a tough slog. The scenery is tranquil and gorgeous in the morning, although at times a little repetitive, rolling farm land for 20Km. Relatively flat course, makes for generally fast times – on years not dealing with THE HEAT. Fans are a little sparse in between farm communities, but the start and beginning make up for that. The best part of course – and makes this race unforgettable is the Post-Race festitivies. DR does a great job of organizing and really making this feel like a small community race – for such a large event. Brought friends out this year, and will be back again in the future!

I love the views and the after party. I also enjoy harder races.
It is summer time, so it will be warm, there will be some hills (rolling) and some gravel for a couple miles, you really need to show up early (they close the roads down). It is not easy for spectators to get around to cheer you on, so if you have family/friends coming- have them bring a book or have them show up closer to when you will be finishing, you should also bring cash for food or a cooler with your own food. If you think you need more water than most people, bring your own (same with calories), Then take your time to drink wine and sober up 🙂 I love this winery, they are always great.
