In 2002 the Peace Officer Memorial Group of Stanislaus County (POMG) was formed. The primary goals of this non-profit organization are to educate the public about officers who die in the line of duty, to support and assist the families of fallen officers, and to raise public awareness of the Stanislaus County, State and National memorials for fallen officers.
The Peace Officer Memorial Run was started in 2012 and is held on the first Sunday of October each year. This race was developed to honor the peace officers from Stanislaus County who were killed in the line of duty. In honor of these heroes, the start line, finish line and each mile of the half marathon will be dedicated to one of the 20 fallen officers from Stanislaus County. The officers photo along with the agency they worked for and their “End Of Watch” date will be displayed at their mile marker.
The half marathon course is flat, fast and will highlight many jewels of Modesto.

I’ve done this race for the last 3 years, and I’m conflicted in my review. I love supporting local, wonderful causes like this, but this race is unorganized. Every year, over the past few years at least one of my friends (all seasoned runners) would get lost at part of the course. I found the course marking improved and at least no one got lost this year. The issue this year was lack of both overall medals and age group medals. They made us wait a long time after the finish for the “awards” ceremony just to take down email addresses and say that they would be in touch. Why even make us wait? It’s been almost two months and no awards yet. I will update my review if this is ever corrected.

Flat course with calm scenery through the town and parks. I enjoyed the half and my daughter had a lot of fun at the kid’s fun run where she got to run with a police officer to “catch the bad guys.”

I enjoyed this race, I liked that it took you through Modesto rather than the orchards. I like that you got to run through dry creek park and checked out the Virginia corridor for a block. The Modesto Marathon only touches on the orchards and is super flat. Peace Officers Memorial Run takes advantage of perhaps every hill in Modesto(there aren’t many) so that is a nice change. I didn’t pick up a swag bag, so I’m not certain of its contents. You got to run with your local law enforcement, and they run in full uniform! Ouch! But how great I that? I really liked the event as a whole, even afterwards, they had all the different units with their own booths and equipment. I’m talking underwater search and rescue, the bomb squad, the swat team, they brought the horses and the dogs. I personally think that it would be a nice adventure for the kiddos even if you aren’t running. I’ll definitely run next year.
