The New Almaden Quicksilver mine in San Jose California, is the oldest and most productive Quicksilver (i.e., mercury) mine in the U.S. The Site was known to the Ohlone for its cinnabar long before a Mexican settler became aware of the ores in 1820. By the time they were identified as mercury, the mine was perfectly timed to supply the California Gold Rush. Two California Historical Landmark markers honor New Almaden Mine: #339 marks a cinnabar hill where Indians gathered pigment for paint, while #339-1 is near Arroyo de los Alamitos Creek where the actual mining of ore first occurred.
Please welcome Jedidiah the Miner, who is our race mascot, to the West Coast Trail Run Family! Our new logo has been designed to commemorate the Quicksilver race location and to honor that era. Jedidiah will be there in spirit along the course on race day.
New Almaden is a beautiful location with plenty of majestic single-track. Along the course you will traverse through gorgeous hillsides with an abundance of beautiful wildflowers, exotic ferns and other captivating flora.
The beautiful scenery comes at a cost. You must earn these amazing views. Those of you who are looking for a challenging course, here it is! This is a course that will definitely get your heart pumping! This is not an easy course, but we do offer a generous cutoff of 8 hours for all distances. Stop and smell the flowers (literally) if you need to catch your breath, and forge on.
The 10k course has been modified, which is a bit easier than in past years, but still quite challenging. The half marathon is a single loop starting on New Almaden Trail to the Mine Hill Trail, then returning on the Randol Trail. You will go out on mostly single track with some shade, and the return on Randol Trail provides gradual hills on a fire road for a bit then finishing on the Virlo Norton Trail loop. The whole loop has good footing with a few exceptions.
Aid stations will be positioned about every 3 to 6 miles miles with a portable restroom at the first aid station which is 6 miles out. The marathon and 50k course is two loops of the half marathon course, with the 50k adding a couple of bonus miles;) Temperatures on average are in the 90’s, so please carry water accordingly.
