Pros: Net down hill (NET – still has uphills), generous cut off time, several 3M freebies
Cons: Very pricey half – I signed up months in advance and still ended up paying $150ish after tax/fee, packet pickup/expo was disappointing with amount of vendors seeing as you had to go and also pay for parking to attend, very few spectators throughout the course.

I did this race really just because it fit well into my schedule & I doubled down with Tucscon Marathon the next day.
That being said – I had a really great time. It is a smaller event so be prepared to be running alone (especially if you’re a back of the pack runner). I was lucky enough to befriend another runner which let the miles cruise on by. It is two loops with some areas far more challenging. Dress warm as the wild was rather cool and limited sunlight. The views were fantastic. Packet pickup day of was great and they waiting for the last person to finish before tearing down which is always appreciated. Be warned that you they do charge you $25 to enter as it’s part of the National Parks Entry Fee .

This day I did the road option as the trail in UT is a lot more challenging. While they advertise it as 4 states if you do the road option that’s basically all just New Mexico with the exception of the start and finish. It’s rather boring doing 26 laps but it worked. I don’t know that I’d necessarily recommend unless you’re just looking to get the states done – which this even works great for.

I added in this half as I needed to get AZ done and it worked well with my race schedule.
I just did a half one day and a full one other day which apparently isn’t a thing (?) but really should be as they’d attract more people who just need one or two states instead of committing to all 4.
The trail was difficult but was pretty at least. They have an aid station on course and finish line food.

Pros: Running of half on Saturday and full on Sunday so easy enough to double with this one or a local race (I did Newport, RI) the next day, easy packet pickup, nice expo, easy free parking, soup at the finish, and pretty course.

Pros: Early start for a longer cut off, pretty course, free parking, pacers.
Cons: While they offer a longer cut off time they don’t treat the back of the pack the same – when I finished there were still 50 people out there and some water stations were already being tore down, food trucks were gone, beer garden was tore down and food was largely picked over. Appreciate the longer finish window but not fair to people finishing later (as is allowed) to not the same experience.

Pro’s: Generous cutoff (7 hours), interesting course with the bridges and two states covered, pacers, encouraging atmosphere, and free race photos.

Pro’s: Super easy parking right by the start/finish for free, packet pickup morning of, relatively flat course, pacers, finish line food & beer
Con’s: Paying for race photos, the humidity (I know, they can’t help it), and time limit. The race has a 3 hour time limit and they have some flexibility on it but not a ton, the course is run through a small beach town and then on sidewalks, so I don’t see any reason as to why they have such a limited time slot and why they can’t be more accommodating. Just be warned that if you tend to take longer than 3 hours you risk being swept off of the course.

This is a smaller race in a super nice little area of Vermont. More of a small community vibe, but well put together. Packet pickup the day prior and the morning of, nice shirts and medals and good communication leading up to it. I didn’t look at the course ahead of time so the hills kicked my ass – they just keep coming and it was absurdly humid that morning. Small finish line with bananas, fruit snacks, and donuts, but overall well put on event.

This is a smaller race (few hundred in the half and less in the full) but well orchestrated. Packet pickup is the day prior, and you can easily make a weekend out of it by adding in the Anchorage Mile the day prior and spending time around Anchorage. Lots of pacers and aid stations throughout. Rather scenic course as you’re just barely in town and then spend most of the miles on a paved bike path.

They don’t even attempt to hide that this will be a challenging course – the hills are unrelenting and it was humid and hot on top of that. The pasta dinner the day before was enjoyable and the race morning logistics were easy with close by parking.

The race is beautiful, mainly downhill with stunning views of the lake. Elevation may be a challenge if you’re not acclimated.
The good: Pacers, really cool medal, full food (like a packed lunch) at the finish, the views, early start for walkers.
The bad: Have no reason to not start earlier as the sun is a doozy when it comes out, ran out of aid (Gu) for the first 7 miles for “slower” runners (I was the 2:45 pacer) which isn’t acceptable, was short on water/cups at some water stops, mile markers were all over the board either super off on their placement or just missing all together, and the shirt is very “meh”.

Overall the race was okay, however, I will preface that I’m not a huge fan of multi day events as I feel like I don’t really see the state. I added this race in as I had a double in Washington following so I was able to easily add the Thursday race in and Idaho is a harder state to find. It’s an out and back course, with hills and an elevation change if you’re not acclimated. A decent group of people but far more enjoyable if you find a buddy to run with. Ample water/food stops as well as food/drinks at the finish line.

I had high hopes for this race, as the website seems put together, and Mississippi does not have that many to offer. However, was sorely disappointed. The day was incredibly hot, which they could not help, but I felt as though they did not have adequate water stations. The course was difficult and hilly, you did get to go through downtown, but there were also some areas that felt not very safe, and it’s a double loop course. My biggest problem was the lack of communication, and lack of safety concerns for the runners. There were several intersections that were not closed off and they were no volunteers so you just had to run across the road and hope for the best. In addition, the course is definitely not closed so you needed to constantly be on the lookout for cars. The after party was nice as there was beer, food, miscellaneous snacks, and water, as well as live music.

This race really does a lot in regards to creating a whole runners weekend atmosphere.
Pros: If you’re looking for a BQ there’s pacers starting at 3 hours in 5 minute increments to cover the BQ times, unique course covering 2 states and 6 cities, aid (Gu) in several locations as well as water/gatorade and towels, beer at the finish, free race photos, and generous (7 hour) cut off time)
Cons: Very open with limited shade (got rather burnt this year), no pacers beyond a 5:30 marathon (really need a 6 and 6:30), and limited to no food for “back of the pack” finishers.

Overall I’d say it’s a good race and you can tell they put a lot of thought into it. Here’s the positives & negatives:
Positives – New this year they offered an early start option so that the marathon essentially had a 7 hour cut off and half marathoners had 4 hours (love to see that more runners can be included), they have several fantastic pace groups, extremely well stocked aid stations (Gu every other aid station) and great volunteers, finish line food (pizza, bagels, sandwiches, potatoes, granola bars, and soda).
Negatives – Course is hilly (their definition of rolling hills is far different from mine), no race-day packet pickup, parking isn’t super easy and many close places took advantage of the influx of people and were charging $10 even if you just needed to dash in to grab your packet, and the expo was disappointing – I got there an hour before it was done and all but one vendor had already torn down.

Overall, a rather good event. There are lots of distances, but all of the courses are run together so be sure to watch the signs and listen to the volunteers so you don’t make a wrong turn. The volunteers and aid stations were great, plus there was a myriad of Pacers which helped as the marathon can get rather spaced out. The whole thing runs around and through Overland Park so you don’t have to worry about cars, but it is several loops and out and back sections

This event was really great, even though the weather was not so much. It was cold and rainy, but so well produced. The first half of the race is definitely hilly so hold on tight, the second half is much easier. There are lots of pacers, well-stocked aid stations and fuel (the maple syrup packets) on course. Huge finisher medal and cool long sleeve shirt. Generous course cut off time, and they keep the finish line open and don’t put away food or anything until the last finisher is done!

This race hit on all fronts! This year was particularly hot and humid which made it a bit more difficult, but so many runners, spectators, enthusiastic volunteers made it a great experience. They have super cool swag including finisher items. Pizza and beer at the finish line. Gu on course as well as water and nuun at every aid station. They do have pace groups but only up until 230 for the half and 530 for the full, they definitely should work on expanding those. Generous course cut offs and encouraging all the way through to the last finishers!

This is a rather large event and has several distances. There’s so much potential for it but a few things that could be tweaked to make it run so much smoother. There is no parking actually in place, it’s just a free-for-all on finding a place to park in a local neighborhood. I didn’t have a problem as I got there an hour early but understand that others definitely did. The Marathon course is hilly so definitely be prepared for that. They have Gu, junk food stations, water and electrolytes. They do have pace teams but do not offer anything slower than a 5:30 a while the course cut off is six hours, I think more teams would be beneficial. There is an after party which is probably over selling it. They had beer and some food but towards the end of the race, there really is not a whole lot left. I grabbed some stuff and then left shortly after.

The race was overall well put together, but lacked in execution on a few things. The course is run as an out and back with the large majority of being on the paved trail that runs along the water. Aid stations are placed throughout the course, not all cups are always filled though, so do not be afraid to grab multiple. The swag and hot cider were great, however they began packing up before all runners were actually finished which was frustrating. Especially seeing those that were at the end, but before the course cut off, that did not get a caramel apple or any other finisher food.

The race overall was rather well put together, and makes for a very good race vacation. You have to do packet pick up the day before but it is a very smooth quick process. Race morning started out at well, you can wait inside of the heated building which is much appreciated. The half and full marathon only run together for about 3 1/2 miles and then the split occurs, and the field thins out vastly. I normally do not run with music, but I found it to be very beneficial for this race as there’s a very high chance that you’ll be running it alone. It is a gradual downhill for about the first 5 miles then uphill for the next 5 miles and then gradual downhill for the last 10. I started out on track for a solid time, but the hills caught me in the second half. The views are great and the course is mainly crushed gravel with some shade. If you do not like running in a smaller field I would recommend doing the half marathon over the full. There are lots of attractions in a fairly close range so I would recommend making a long weekend out of it and checking out some of the sites (we saw Mammoth Site, Mt Rushmore, Wind Cave and Custer state park)!

I participated in this event as a pacer. I have to say, it was incredibly well managed, organized, and executed. There are several pace groups for the half marathon, which seemed to be used by quite a few runners. The course is a bit challenging as there definitely are hills, but the pretty fall colors made up for some of the suffering. Aid stations were stocked with water, Nuun and eager volunteers (there is no energy gels). The finish line was fantastic with snacks, water, pizza, a sandwich, and the option to purchase alcohol as well. Oh and the swag, super cute! Quarter Zips – just check the sizing as women’s are very fitted.

I stumbled upon this half marathon as I was planning on doing a vacation to Georgia during this time anyway. The race far exceeded my expectations. It has the feel of a hometown race, but actually gathers a sizable group (300+ half marathoners). The course is hilly enough and ends on an uphill. Two aid stations had energy gels/bars with plenty of water stops. The finish line celebration was fantastic! They had a boxed lunch, complementary beer and ice cream, and waited long enough to do the award ceremony so that most of the runners were finished which was a nice surprise and led to a more encouraging atmosphere.

I signed up for the race to knock out a full marathon in Colorado when I was out there anyway. The race was ok, but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it. It is a very small race, having maybe 30 full marathon runners, which means you really are relying on yourself for the entire race (not my personal preference). The course itself has alright views, but given it’s Colorado, is nothing spectacular. You run on a crushed gravel trail, kind of an out and back course. Clif Shot Gu was at several aid stations, race day was rather warm so probably could have used additional water stops. Finish line had water, bagel chunks, bananas, and breakfast burritos.

This is a smaller race, but very well planned. You bus to the start line as it’s a point to point. It’s advertised as downhill, which is mainly true as there’s an overall elevation loss, but it’s gradual, and a few minor hills thrown in. Plenty of aid stations which help as there is very few spectators for the majority of the course. You won’t be completely alone for the race, but due to it being a smaller event, may end up running alone or with fewer people. They also have pacers!

Have nothing but great things to say about this event. While the distance is a bit different (10 nautical miles = 11.5 miles), it’s great to use as a training run, or just to race a different mileage. They bus you to the start and from the finish line, so parking was a breeze. Lots and lots of pacers and very well planned and executed. Finish line was very well stocked, and they were equally supportive of the runners at the back of the pack which isn’t always seen. Definitely have on my radar for future years!

It’s a very small race (the full had about 50 people) so there’s a decent chance you’ll spend a good portion of it alone, especially if you’re a back of the pack-er. The course is an out and back, so you do see runners throughout the course. You run past a lot of corn fields, but you’re in almost direct sun the entire time. Plenty of aid stations and they have Gu/Gels/fuel. Had lots of finish line food including breakfast pizza, snacks, and water/powerade. The race was well planned and executed, I just don’t enjoy or do well at very small events as you’re so alone.

I will preface this review by saying I am not the biggest fan of trail running, but have given enough races a shot to see if I change my mind. This race only solidified that yes, I do not enjoy them. As this race puts on several different distances, it did not start until 10 AM for the half marathon which was rather late in the day, and just not ideal for myself. There was only two aid stations and the course is technical enough. My biggest frustration is that there was no indication on how far you were in and instead of it being 13.1 miles it was closer to 15. I will say that the finish line food and beer was fantastic, really great to have a full meal and enjoy conversing with other runners after the event.

The morning of was smooth enough, they had pacers for the event, and well marked course. I will preface this review by saying that I’m not the biggest fan of trail runs. I was traveling to San Francisco and wanted to get a run in and stumbled upon this one. I overlooked the fact that it was a trail run but was not too concerned when I discovered it as it had a 3 1/2 hour cut off time. That gave me more than enough time to run a half marathon. The actual course was beautiful albeit very challenging. There really is no aid offered the entire time with the exception of two areas that have water that you can fill up a water bottle that you have to carry and bring. My real frustration came towards the end of the race as I should have been nearing the finish line but instead I found out I had several miles to go. Due to it being on a trail there was no indication of how far you had gone or mile markers. The race ended up being 15 miles. In addition, the volunteers/directors of the race began taking down the ribbons that directed you where to turn, while runners were still on the course. I was about a mile out from the finish when I passed a volunteer who is taking down ribbons. I asked what they were doing and they said the course cut off was coming up. There were still a handful of runners behind me that were then at the mercy of the trails to just hopefully find their way back out. When I cross the finish line it was lackluster and had a few things to offer but very little. I could not get out of there fast enough. The race needs to be better about protecting their runners. It was a warm day and not having ample fluids out there or monitoring the course is ridiculous. Otherwise be sure to warn runners that the course cut off is a hard cut off and that it will take you far longer than expected. It took me over an hour longer than it normally does to run a half marathon, but the course was actually 15 miles. Would not recommend.

This absolutely is a challenging trail race, but really a great opportunity to see Devil’s Lake State Park. They do offer a morning of race packet pickup which is great. The shirt is meh, and the medal is made of wood, so it is different swag than normal. Due to it being a trail race there is no aid stations/water stops. The course is difficult for sure, and the 10K is the easiest of all, be prepared to have a much slower time, and be patient as it’s a narrow course so passing isn’t all that easy. The race is well planned overall, no day packet pickup but they offer it for several days before which helps. They offer buses to the start which is great. The course is okay, pretty views, and they offer an early race start as they otherwise have a 5.5 hour cutoff for the marathon. Will say that it’s a smaller field and due to it because a Boston Qualifier it’s a very fast field, so if you’re a slower runner be prepared to be alone a good portion of the time. It’s an expensive race, and don’t know that you get your moneys worth. No finisher photos, a standard t-shirt, decent medal, an ice cream sandwich, but no other finish line food/drinks.

This race seriously is so great! They offer a free beer run (5K with beer at the end) on Friday night, a 5K Saturday morning, and then a half and full marathon on Sunday. They have a full expo and packet pickup, I’d absolutely plan to make a full weekend out of it. The course is stunning, has some hills, but you’ll be so swept up in the views you won’t feel them (that much). They’ve got ample aid stations, and fuel, they do have pacers, but really wish they’d offer a few more “slower” groups as they cut off at the 5 hour mark. Positives: Sweatshirt & cool medal, finish line food, pacers, morning of packet pickup, and a scenic course.
Negatives: Parking wasn’t horrible but I got there rather early, to be expected with Chicago but I’m not from the area so not as familiar, and the race can seem more for show than for competition so there isn’t Gu/energy gels and there’s a decent chance you get “stuck” in the starting chute – not a huge problem but if you’re looking for a PR plan accordingly.

Thoroughly enjoyed this race. Packet pickup was a breeze, finding everything (including parking) was no problem which is usually about half of my nervousness. The weather was fantastic, super supportive volunteers and staff and actually a rather good showing of locals that were out encouraging runners as well. Finish line had free photos and quite a bit of food as well as vendors if you wanted to buy a meal.

I will preface but saying I’m NOT a trail runner, but I had signed up for this race anyway and then was deferred with Covid.
Positives: They offer a spaghetti dinner the night before, packet pickup is quick and easy and finding parking wasn’t a problem, everyone was very kind and helpful with everything, and free photos on course!
Negatives: HARD course – very technical and I spent almost the whole race just starting down so I didn’t bust an ankle, also make sure you seed yourself properly as it’s a narrow race so when you hit the trail it’s very hard to pass, and the course got rather muddy (not their fault) but had to be careful with your footing.

I did this one as a way to hold myself accountable during the long winter but boy was it tough. The day was in the teens with fresh snow and a nasty wind. The volunteers were nice, but it’s a smaller town race so don’t expect much for support, there was no bathrooms along the course, and several of the water stations had ice instead of water (not totally their bad). Also far hillier than I was expecting, I didn’t do that well, but wasn’t a bad course.

I nearly pulled off a PR at this race with minimal training so I have fond memories of this race. That regardless, it was a very well executed event. Swag was fantastic, creates for a great race weekend with the 5K the day before. Overall there isn’t a ton of people cheering you on throughout the event but there’s enough spectators sprinkled in with the aid stations so that you don’t go crazy out there. Would highly recommend!

Overall the race was fairly enjoyable, here’s the pros and cons:
Pro – package pick up is rather easy, finding parking was not an issue, 5K the day before to create a fun race weekend, lots of finish line snacks and beer and photo ops
Cons – The first half of the course was enjoyable as you ran with a half marathon, you run right past the finish line though so that’s a little rough, plus then the fields clears out considerably. The second half of the course is far less enjoyable with you running on a gravel trail in more of an out and back situation, there’s virtually no support and the mental game can be tough

This race is absolutely spectacular. I wasn’t planning on doing it but seeing as it was the last year I made sure to make time for it. The course is definitely difficult as you basically climb up the mountain in a zigzag pattern, but the views are incredible and the finish line is downhill which makes you feel like a bad ass. As usual the production is superb.

The first half was super great as you ran with the half marathoners, then there was a big drop off and the second half was far less enjoyable. The first half also had quite a few spectators as it ran through town. There were ample aid stations with lots of Gu and water. I’d probably recommend doing the half over the full if you thrive on more support and runners around you.

I will preface by saying I don’t love trail races but here’s my review:
Pro’s – Lots of parking, GU on course, open start & finish line
Con’s – Technical enough trail (I fell twice and bled), gets muddy easily, difficult to pass if need be.

The day before the race it had snowed so it was a very rough course as it’s on paved trail but was treading through several inches of snow the whole time. The course wasn’t anything spectacular and wasn’t a huge field but was out and back so you saw enough people. They did have pizza at the end in a heated building which was amazing after freezing for several hours.

I ran this as part of the Mount Everest Challenge (2K/5K/Half Marathon) and had a fantastic time. The website is POOR and I don’t think I ever actually got a response on questions I had for them. However, their event was well executed, cool medal, pretty solid swag. You had to pay for parking, and they didn’t have aid (Gu) except water, but was a great event to get in before all events were put on pause.
