I signed up for this race as part of the Indython with the Monumental. I had been to the park before, but never noticed how many hills there were!!! This was the toughest course I’ve ever done. The scenery was absolutely BEAUTIFUL, but for someone who has no hills to train on, it was mentally and physically brutal.

Fantastic support from the aid stations and course aids! While I miss the old version of this race when it was later in the season with cooler temps and beautiful fall foliage, Fort Ben is still a great place to run. Expect a hilly course.

From the starting line to the finish line the Fort Ben Half Marathon offers runners the scenery of a lifetime! The beautiful trees and the trail paths that wind and whip their way throughout the park will keep your mind off of your breath and your eyes full in awe. I have to be honest I didn’t train like I should have this year and I wasn’t sure at all if I could finish. But with the amount of people surrounding me and the beautiful views around me I had no problem making it to that finish line! The military volunteers were so helpful in passing out water and gatorade almost every mile. And when it got near to the end and everybody was fighting for one step further, the volunteers were there to cheer us on and keep up our spirits!! The final leg to the finish line was the best part as it went right through the beautiful buildings and the Fort Ben that we all have learned to love and look forward to seeing every year! This was my 2nd year running this race and I can assure you that I will be there on my 3rd!

It’s a beautiful course, but be prepared for some hills. They overall organization was good. I know that the weather was abnormal, but due to this year’s conditions, the race may have benefited from an earlier start time. The cook out was nice, it’s good to have some food available that’s not a banana!

Very organized parking setup. Clear and obvious how to navigate to race site. Race site laid out well and friendly for people cheering on racers. Nicely laid out course with staff stationed along the way. Tech shirts were awesome and the medals look amazing! First-time running this as a 5k and hope to do it next year as a half!

There are some good hills in this race that get the heart pumping. There is plenty of race parking and you don’t get stuck in traffic coming in or out which is great. There are numerous vendors and freebies and the medals look super cool with a nice fall theme. This is one of my favorite halfs, much better than the Indy Mini in my opinion!

Part of the Indython series (with the Monumental Marathon/Half/5k in Nov) and runs through Fort Benjamin Harrison – a state park smack in the middle of Indianapolis. I heard a lot of “don’t let the hills deter you” but forgot about that until I saw the hills … however, definitely don’t let the hills deter you because this is an awesome race with great support. Plus, the cookout at the end was greatly appreciated! Nice medal and the quarter-zip tech shirt was very nice as well. Just when I thought I was going to ease out of races and running, I find another race that I want to add to my annual calendar.

2018 marked my third year in a row running the half marathon race at Fort Ben. This race has become my favorite half marathon race. It’s got the feel of a trail run, but the entire course is paved. (I won’t run trail races for fear of tripping and falling.) I love everything about this race: the 1/4 zip tech shirt, the beautiful scenery, the enthusiastic cadets at every water stop, the medal, the post-race atmosphere, the free cookout and free photos.

The course is mostly flat with a few rolling hills at mile 2.6 and miles 10-11. They provide a nice challenge if you’ve been logging lots of flat training miles and a perfect tune-up for their sister race just a month away (the Monumental half or full). I will be back year after year for this one!

I entered this race with encouragement from my running group to do a second mini in the fall (I usually stick to spring halfs). I am glad I agreed. I was in a better position (physically) to run this one. It felt like I had been training all year; as opposed to just a few months. However, next time I’ll be ready (physically and mentally) for those hills! They kicked by butt.

This race was great. I was talked in to this race by a friend who wanted an easy travel race, we are from Columbus, Ohio. It was great from start to finish. When we arrived and got checked in we got in a little shopping then headed to the hotel. The next morning parking was easy, close and FREE! On the grounds they had camp forest set up for you to relax before the race. At the start the pace groups when in a very timely manner, which was a little unexpected, everyone has been stuck in a corral a little longer then necessary. The course was beautiful and challenging. The scenery was so breathtaking and able to take your mind off the hills. The support along the course was also top notch, they had a cadet troup that was amazing at keeping you motivated singing and laughing and clapping. In a race that was mostly in the woods it was nice to see a good cheering section. After the race the grill out was amazing also, you also got your banana, but could go and get a burger, hotdog, bratwurst, veggie burger, or pizza. They also had tables set up inside the tent so you didn’t have to eat on the ground. Over all this race was amazing. I will definitely do it again, and it may move up to my favorite!

The Indy Half at Fort Ben is a well organized half marathon where you have room to move/breath within a couple of miles. The aid stations are plentiful (although the water was a bit cold for such a hot day). The rolling hills give you plenty of space to glide and build up before going uphill. We stayed at the Fort Ben State Park Inn – easy walk to the start.

With such a small race and late start time (8:30a), I wish we could pick up our bibs the day of so we would not have to spend a night.

Also, it was a little odd to have a prayer at the start of a race where ?some? proceeds benefit a public school system. Give us a moment of silence, but please keep religion out of it.

This was my second time completing this race and while I’m a more experienced runner, I still struggled with this race. The heat and hills got to me with this one. The scenery is beautiful however. The downside, the downhill slope is at the beginning making you run uphill toward the end of the run. You can’t predict Indiana weather so that is no one’s fault. I love this run for the scenery, the swag, and the memories I make with my team. Cant wait to repeat next year!

Even the minor aspects, (such as parking) which can sometimes turn the whole mood around, were handled beautifully! The race swag, atmosphere, scenery, and organization were all top notch. I will definitely be returning next year… and bringing all of my friends!

Super pretty course. It was challenging, plenty of hills and this particular day it was too warm for my personal for long distance race preference. The bathroom lines were ridiculously long. Yay for wave start! Longed the pit stop volunteers. Packet pick up was easy peasy. And the 1/4 zip top is very comfortable. I also purchased a shirt with all race participants names on it!

This was my first time running this race and I really enjoyed this race. The course is so beautiful! With it being fall the leaves are so beautiful and while we ran the trail leaves were falling all around. There were some ‘hills’ which for me I wasn’t ready for, but I suppose for others who don’t run on flat paths it wouldn’t be bad. I was 2 minutes shy of a PR and I have a feeling the hills were a big factor for me. Next year I hope to go back and be more prepared. The half ends with trails through the trees which is really nice because it gets you out of the sun. Many water stops which are important and really easy to get to the race.
    I highly recommend this course!
