I would recommend the Des Moines Women’s races for any women. There’s positive vibes and support for women of all paces. There’s a variety of races to choose from: 5k Friday evening or 10k, half-marathon, or half 3-person relay on Sunday morning. This race started in 2017. I have run it every year including virtually during COVID. They give quality races medals and race clothing. There’s perks for running Sat and Sun – extra race swag! There’s excellent crowd support all throughout this mostly paved road and trail race. There’s a short portion at the end on a dirt trail, but it feels good because it’s soft and shady due to tree coverage. Course is fast with very few inclines. The race finishes at Jasper Winery, therefore there’s a free glass of wine to celebrate your accomplishment.

If you’re a 50-stater and only experience one Nevada race, I recommend this one. From registration to completion, it’s a well run race. There’s adequate information share prior to, during, and post-race. One of the highlights is the REVEL app. No need to click as you cross the start. Click “I’m at the Start” any time prior to the start. During the run, the app lets you know pace and estimated finish time every mile. You receive a voice notification 0.25 mi before every stop regarding aid station accommodations, such as bathrooms water Gatorade Gu orange slices doTerra Deep Blue cream in the order they’re arranged. There are notifications regarding local history, race stats, when turns are approaching, and safety cues advising what side of the cones you should be on to avoid oncoming traffic. Race expo has all the things a runner may need, but not excessive (my preference). It’s quick and easy. Be prepared for the cold prior to the start of the race. Wear many layers and shed them as you descend. Bring a mylar heat blanket to stay cozy until race start. I’m not sure if they hand these out; I brought my own. There are adequate bathrooms prior to and during the race. I liked that there was a sign posted when bathrooms or photographers were ahead. The race medal is excellent, and they give free quality race photos! Post race you can receive a printed postcard with your race stats and another if you qualify for Boston. My only complaint (or more so disappointment) is the volume of trash along the course due to runners dumping clothes etc. Pre-race information kindly asked runners to dispose trash in trash bins at water stops only. Even in the final mile I witnessed clothes and other trash. Overall, the race ranks at the top!
