Very well organized expo and race. Sufficient pre-race communication emails with relevant information on the expo and races. The race packet included the bib and a nice, 20-oz hot/cold aluminum travel mug with lid. Finisher shirts were not given out at the expo but rather AFTER you finished the race, in the post-race area. Fairly large expo with lots of vendors, samples, freebies, and race essentials for purchase. Long wait lines for a free personalized shirt, so I skipped it. Bone chilling cold start to the race without any heat lamps or heat sheets so bring your own sheets/hand warmers. Lot of volunteers to ensure runners knew where to go. Nothing spectacular about the course, in my opinion but lots of people were out cheering and supporting runners. Water and Gatorade were available approximately every 2 miles. Gels were also available around mile 7ish. Visible mile markers along the course for both the half and full events (shared course until split just after mile 7). The split for the marathon was very well marked. My absolute favorite part of this course was being able to get a shot (or two) of Fireball whiskey at mile 12 LOL!! Once finishers crossed the finish line, medals were distributed then runners were funneled into the huge hall of the convention center where photo ops, foods, changing areas, and finisher swag (HOU double medal etc.) were available. I especially liked that this area was only for runners/finishers. Family members had to wait until their loved ones exited that area to be reunited. Finisher food items included an ice-cream bar (think dessert before meal), followed by eggs, pancakes, biscuits, sausage, gravy, bananas, coffee and water. For runners who wanted to reunite with loved ones sooner, they could skip the free post race meal and eat at a neighboring restaurant, some of which were co-located at the convention center. Great race and one I’d recommend but not repeat. One and done for me because of the extremely cold temps. Great experience though. While in the area, I also drove out to the Space Center Houston. I’d been to HOU countless times visiting family and never explored the area until this race.

Well organized race around Veteran’s Day weekend. Don’t be surprised by the boom/bang of the canon which signals the start of the race. A quick loop around the park before heading out towards the trails. The course is along the battlefield though there are a few hard ball roads to navigate. The course was well supported by volunteers especially when crossing roads. There were hydration points along the course. Hot soup was available at the finish along with water, Powerade, fruit, chips, and cookies. The course is along the National Historic Site of the Chickamauga Battlefield so I visited the site and completed a few activities from the Junior Ranger program while in the area. Beautiful medal which incorporated the acorn which can be seen throughout the park. I also visited Point Park and Lookout Mountain Battlefield park, about 20 minutes from Chickamauga. The views from there were amazing! Given the close proximity to TN, I opted to do a tour of Ruby Falls.

Very well organized and executed race. The runner’s guide is available online and was also sent in pre-race emails. Very limited options for flying into Salina. Rental car company was off-off site! Packet pickup at very small expo in the host hotel (Homewood Suites by Hilton) downtown, a few blocks from race start/finish. A few local vendors/businesses at expo with freebies. 2023 race shirts were available for purchase along with cowbells, magnets, and a few other items. Met one of the RDs, Daniel, at the expo. Cool dude. Got a pic with him while thanking him for putting on the race. Race morning was cold and rainy. Coupons were available at the expo for a discount at one of the local mom/pop Italian restaurant. Lots of free parking available around the downtown area close to the race start/finish line. The race directors kept a very close eye on the weather and sent out updates as it got closer to the start of the race. Nothing spectacular to see along the course except for a few murals here and there. Course was well marked. Noticeable, gradual incline around between miles 6 and 7 but otherwise it was a flat course. There were hydration stations along the course with sufficient volunteers despite the yucky weather. Felt great to finish and get my medal. A few photo ops at the finish line. While there wasn’t a place for runners to stay warm at the finish line, a few block over, the community center was open and bathrooms were available to dry off and change out of wet clothes. Lots of finish line food and drink available, including pie (first thing being handed out after the medal :] ) hot chocolate, hamburger and/or cheesesteak sliders, water, bananas, chips, and a lot more which I’m forgetting. Didn’t explore much due to the weather but drove around the downtown area and captured pics of the amazing murals. There are many talented artists in Salina and it’s great to see their work on display on buildings downtown. I captured 12 different murals and I’m sure there were a lot more.

Overall, I highly recommend this race. The cost of registration ($15 for the half marathon) is unbelievably low and you get so much for that price, including a nice quality finisher’s medal. You can pay an extra $20 for a race shirt. (I’ve paid more for other races and the medal looked bleeehhhhhh!) The RDs can’t control the weather but despite the weather, they did their best to ensure runners had a great experience.

I had an amazing weekend! The expo was everything!! Lots of freebies and great items to purchase. Also lots of opportunities for pics.

All the races were well organized with sufficient crowd support along the way. A few hills in the 10K and a lot more in the half but if you train for hills, you will be fine. The view on the way to and at mile 7 is beautiful. It was pretty much downhill after mile 7. That was the biggest incline. The recovery area had a lot of post race fuel, photo opportunities and spots to just hang out. It was great having access to the post race hotel shuttles.

I thoroughly enjoyed the race weekend.
