A big, well-organized event with a genuinely great race-day atmosphere. Pre-race communication was excellent, and packet pickup was easy — especially convenient if you’re also doing the Semper Fred 5K the day before, as they share the same pickup. The start is memorable: a howitzer fires to send you off, which never gets old.
Logistics have some rough edges. Traffic getting into Fredericksburg is heavy — plan to arrive well before your target arrival time. Parking near the start/finish is available but requires a bit of a walk, so again, earlier is better. This is a mass start with no waves or pace corrals, so if you want to be near the front, get there early and position yourself accordingly.
The course itself is hilly and honest — don’t expect a PR course. Plenty of hydration along the course and one nutrition stop with Untapped Gels. The finish festival was a bit of a letdown: held in a Wegmans parking lot with limited shade. Not the celebratory send-off the race deserves.
Worth doing, especially as part of the Semper Fred + Historic Half double. Strong event overall; the finish area is the main area for improvement.

A laid-back, family-friendly 5K in historic Fredericksburg — a great low-key race on its own, and an ideal shakeout the day before the Historic Half. The course is fast with very gentle rolling hills through a charming small-town setting. Nothing intimidating here.
Logistics are smooth. Packet pickup was well-organized and hassle-free — note there’s no race-day pickup option, so plan accordingly. Parking was easy enough as long as you arrived early. The staging area is spacious with plenty of room to warm up, which is a nice touch for a race this size.
Swag is solid: a nice tech shirt and a small but well-made medal. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming — a good fit for families or anyone looking for a fun morning without the intensity of a larger event.
If you’re running the Historic Half the next day, this is a no-brainer addition to the weekend.

My second time running this race, with a much better result! This year’s Heroes vs. Villains theme brought out creative costumes—superheroes and villains everywhere added great energy to the course.
The 10K course winds beautifully through wooded gravel/dirt trails around Burke Lake. Fair warning: it’s deceptively difficult. The paved downhill start tempts you to go out fast, but you’ll pay for it once you hit the trails. Patience in those first 2 miles is key!
Solid race production for a smaller event (~500 runners). A couple of well-placed water stations on course (perfect for a 10K), plus plenty of post-race snacks and water. The tech shirt fit well and the medal was a nice size—good value.
The only downside was the unseasonably cold weather, which dampened the post-race atmosphere. Fine for runners staying warm, but tough on the kids at the finish festival.

The first of many Marine Corps races for me – they have a great reputation for putting on well-organized and challenging races, and this one did not disappoint.
The pre-race communication was excellent. We received timely and relevant updates, and I had no problem figuring out where to be and when. If you are doing this one, follow the advice: “Race day packet pickup is a last resort” – it was so smooth picking up my packet the day before, while the line at the race looked rough!
As an added bonus, there was a fun and very motivating virtual challenge prior to the race which earned an extra challenge coin upon completion. I was one of 19 folks that finished it!
Race day logistics seemed complicated beforehand, but it was relatively smooth. Plan to get there early – you need to park off-site, take a shuttle, then walk almost a mile. It was at least 30-40 minutes from parking to arriving at the start area. There were ample porta potties there, but the lines started to get long closer to race time.
The start area was very crowded, and the race starts on a relatively small gravel trail. One possible area for improvement would have been expected pace signage. We were instructed to line up according to pace, but a lot of people didn’t know where to line up. I spent the first 1-2 miles trying to weave around slower runners who lined up towards the front.
The course is challenging. It’s a big loop starting and ending in the same spot. The beginning and end were on the same muddy gravel trail with small steep hills and quite a few turns. The middle of the race is comparatively smooth – all paved road. Very fast, mostly downhill for a large chunk of the race, and then lots of steep uphills on the way back. The course is very quiet (only a handful of supporters) and quite scenic. We had perfect weather this year: 50-60s and sunny.
There was adequate hydration throughout the course, although they could have been more consistent in differentiating between Nuun and water – I wasn’t sure which I was getting when I took a cup, but it didn’t bother me too much as I was used to either. The last two miles are absolutely brutal – I knew they were coming, but somehow they felt much steeper towards the end of the race.
Overall, a great race and a perfect early season fitness test for those planning on the Marine Corps Marathon.

Overall, this was a top-notch event.
The communication leading up to the race was excellent. I wasn’t sure that I’d be able to attend the expo, so I had them mail my bib, which arrived at least a week before the race. I booked a hotel well in advance and was able to find an affordable option within walking distance from the start line.
Getting to the start line and corrals was very straightforward on race day. It felt crowded, but manageable.
During the race, the crowd was amazing. I haven’t experienced this level of support for a race yet, and to some degree, it felt like I could feed off of the crowd’s energy. It seemed like they positioned a lot of the crowds near key turns in the race and had excellent signage to keep the runners on course.
The half-marathon course was mostly flat with some very small hills around the middle of the course in Bryan Park.
The course support (and support from other runners) was amazing.

This was my second time at this event, having done the 5K last year. Similar to the 5k, the 10 mile is an out and back starting at and finishing at the Mount Vernon estate. I enjoy the scenery – the course runs along the Potomac and provides some great views. There a significant hill down during the first mile and up during the last mile (which hits just as you’re out of gas at the end), so the race is a decent challenge. I thought that race was well organized with decent communication. My only critique is that the specific location of water stations did seem to be published anywhere. I ended up bringing my own, but I remember them placed at miles (1.5/8.5, 4/6). There was a noticeable difference in excitement this year with the rain vs last year where we had great weather, but that’s to be expected.

Having done the 5K last year, I did the 10K for the first time this year. The race was organized by Bishop Events which does hundreds of charity events in the area. You can tell that they are pros at this – the production is very smooth and just enough for the number of runners.
The 10K course was essentially two out and back 5Ks mostly on dirt and gravel trail with some roots and small rocks. The course is open which wasn’t too much of a problem since the race was relatively early.
The swag included a tech shirt and a small finishers medal with additional medals and/or plaques for the top finishers.
For the cost, convenience, and smooth production I was happy with how it all went. Next year maybe I’ll do the Half!

Burke Lake was where I did my first 5K and where I train occasionally, so I’ll always love coming back here. Notably, this race was to raise funds for the park itself, so I was very motivated to do it and gave a little more as a donation at registration time.
The production was good. I picked up my bib the day before, but it didn’t seem too difficult to pick it up before the race. I was familiar with the park, but I know that others appreciated that volunteers guide everyone to their parking spots and the start/finish area.
I did the 10K (the event also offered 5K and kids run options). The course was a mostly flat dirt gravel trail through the woods. It’s a small winding path with the occasional root sticking up, so it was a bit more difficult than a standard street race. The 5K and 10K courses converged about halfway, where the water stations were, and this ended up being a very congested and chaotic area.
There was plenty of cheering throughout the course and near the finish line. The startfinish festival was fun. There were plenty of snacks, but there was only a single water table, which got backed up very quickly as runners started to come in. Fortunately, some public water fountains around the area were able to be used.
The swag included a large medal, tech T-shirt, and reusable tote bag. The top finishers (overall/age group) got an additional gift bag.
Since this race is local for me and raises money for my local park, I’ll do it again. I’d highly recommend it for anyone who wants a fun, low-key, local race experience!

The production around this event was top-notch – so well organized. Packet pickup was smooth, and making it to the race was easy. Not necessarily a criticism of the event, but the porta-potty lines were insurmountable starting an hour before right up until the time of the event.
The course was flat and provided a nice tour of some notable DC landmarks (the capital, most notably). There were a ton of people cheering on the runners throughout the course, and a live samba band played around the halfway point!
In addition to the 5K, I did the kids’ run with my 5-year-old and was pleasantly surprised at the safety measures that they had in place. The kids had a blast running with Stumpy!
I’d consider doing this event again, but will try to get into the 10mi first.

Mount Vernon is a lovely area and I was looking forward to this run. The course is mostly an out-and-back on George Washington Parkway but turns into the estate at the end to finish directly in front of the mansion. The first mile was a slight downhill, so I felt like I was flying, but regretted starting so fast toward the end when I ran out of gas going back up the hill during the last mile.
This was one of the more crowded races that I’ve ever done, but it was well run. The atmosphere was fun, lots of folks dressed in themed clothes, and one runner even played Revolutionary War-era fife tunes on a flute during the race!
I’d highly recommend packet pickup before race day. I also pre-paid for parking – spots are limited and sell out fast. The race area is quite small for such a large race, so packet pickup was very crowded on race day. There are shuttles from Alexandria to the race start if you aren’t able to get parking. There is a bag check where they’ll take your stuff from the start line to the finish inside the estate.
I found out after the fact that you are supposed to check the clear plastic bag that they give you with your bib and not your bag. I brought a backpack which they graciously accepted even though I did it the wrong way!
The post-race party was fun. They had the standard bananas, snacks, etc., but you could also purchase concessions, although the lines got long quickly! Also, you got a free beer!
The swag includes a tech shirt and a nice medal.
