My husband and I completed this race series together. We did the Hangover Series (both 5ks and the half marathon). I’m talking about them together first because why would you NOT do the whole series?! LOL! We got to packet pick up on New Year’s Eve around 4pm for the 5pm race. They had 2 different options for hoodies for the Series. We got 2 of the last 3 or 4. I don’t know if this happens every year or not. The swag was AMAZING!!! For each race, we got a race specific 3/4 sleeve raglan (baseball) type shirt. They are all white with different color sleeves. My clumsy self hates wearing white, but these shirts are great! We got the hoodie for completing the series—we opted for the quarter zip that was a bit heavier material, but there was a hoodie that was t-shirt like material. It was nice to have the option. We also got a REALLY nice beanie with a leather race logo and race logo tech gloves. Since we were over 21, we also got plastic beer steins.

I was happy this one started at 9am instead of normal half marathon times! Doing the RITNY 5k, we ended up getting to bed around 2am, so it was ROUGH getting up and being excited about the half marathon! Neither of us were feeling it. Luckily, the half course followed the RITNY course mostly, so some of it was familiar. Pre and post race were inside again. I really loved this! On the course, there were 2 water stops that you hit twice and 1 that you hit 4 times. This course was a down and back, but mile 2ish to almost 7 was a loop that you did twice and then went back towards the start. The course was mostly paved sidewalk and trail. There was about a mile of some uneven asphalt pavement that you hit twice. You just had to watch your footing a bit more. I loved this course! Most of it was along the river and beautiful. There were quite a bit of hills, some were pretty steep. I could have been extra sensitive to this because my hip was in pain the entire time and uphill made it worse. There was no time limit and everyone was willing and happy to stay until the last finisher, which I’m pretty sure was me! They did not move anything until they were sure there was absolutely no on else on the course. If you are a back of the pack-Er like me, you appreciate this SO FREAKING MUCH!!!! Post race, there were donuts (Krispy Kreme), granola bars, hot chocolate, coffee, and bananas. They also were selling swag if you wanted extra. The medals are GORGEOUS!!! They are bigger than the 5k medals and ALL glitter and sparkle.

Overall, this race series was amazing. I loved it so much! It was cheaper for my husband and I to do this entire series than the OKC Memorial half costs, and we got WAY more swag! Just to give you an idea of comparison of cost and swag.I highly recommend this series! 50 staters, this is a great one to think about for Kansas! I hope we are able to do this again sometime.

This race started on NYE at 11:45. Pre and post race were both inside again. It was much colder for this race, so that was much appreciated. I did not think through the fact that this race was going to be dark. My husband had his night gear (flashing light running gear). I wish I would have thought of that or had glow sticks or something. I am VERY slow, and I am glad my husband and I had already planned on doing this together. It was very dark in some areas with almost no one else around, so it would have been scary by myself. The course was mostly lit. Most of the course was along the river, which was beautiful. We had to pay attention to when midnight hit since we were on the course. Fireworks were going off everywhere, but we could not see all of them. That was really annoying! We could hear them but not see them. Nothing the race can do about that though. There were not any water stops on the course. Post race, there were cookies and cider. The medals were, again, the race logo. Very nice! This was an amazing way to bring in the new year! If we do this race again, I will bring lights and pack for colder weather than predicted. Same for the whole series.

This race started at 5pm and was a beer run, if you chose to do so. Even though not everyone was drinking, the participants seemed more relaxed. This race was in El Dorado, KS which was about a 30 minute drive from our hotel near the start of the other 2 races. The packet pick up was inside, which was great for pre and post race. There was beer in the room for the first beer stop. They did check IDs in order to get a wrist band and stein. This was a small race (about 300 participants), but it was very well organized. The volunteers at the 2 beer stops were amazing, friendly, and cheered a bunch. I don’t think there was anything other than beer, but I wasn’t paying too much attention. The course was a down and back on the road and a paved running trail. It was pretty flat throughout and there were people at turns to help guide us. This was especially helpful when it was dark because we couldn’t remember! Post race was more beer, chili, and cornbread. This was such a treat! The medal was the same logo as the shirt and was a nice one! I definitely recommend this race! We really enjoyed the entire series.

Overall about the Bear Lake Trifecta:
The owner bought the race 6 days before the event. It was very…bumpy, but he did his best with what he inherited. The previous owners did not leave much information or direction for him. The issues that occurred, he apologized for and was determined to fix for next year. He is an experienced runner and triathlon and knows what we expect. He also owns other events, so I am confident that the race will improve. The swag we got was great! I was expecting a shirt for each race, but we only got one. The quality was great. The medals were gorgeous and state/day specific, but not race specific. This doesn’t bother me, but it does bother others. The swag bag had the most things from sponsors of any race I’ve done. There were all sorts of goodies! For completing all 3 races, we got a flask, which is awesome! It also had a race decal in it. We got a zip up race hoodie and a buff, but I don’t remember what for. They basically had a bunch of different race logo merch and no specification of what each piece was for. The post race goodies were amazing, especially for such a small race. There were many food and drink options after each race. They capped the total participants at 500. They also added a 5k, which added a lot of local runners. This was a difficult task—3 half marathons in 3 days—but the staff and volunteers made it much easier!

Specific To This Race:
The scenery of this course was my favorite of the 3, but it was the most difficult. There were some crazy hills. It may not be as bad as I remember though. I had HORRIBLE blisters and blisters on blisters on this day, so I was mostly miserable about that. lol! For most of the course, you could see Bear Lake, which is GORGEOUS! I had a hard time looking ahead because I was looking at the lake to the side. The first part of the down and back course wasn’t too bad. Typical road race experiences, I would say. After the gorgeous lighthouse, things got worse. There were CRAZY hills. Very steep. Very long. There was one area that didn’t have a downhill afterward. There was a part of the course (mile 5/6 I think) that was a trail course. I don’t do trail races for a reason. There wasn’t really any warning about this part either. It was basically a mountain side with tire tracks as a “trail”. The tire tracks were dirt and rock, so there was not any part that you could step flat (super fun with my blisters). There also was a constant incline Along with some rolling hills. I felt horrible for the marathoners because they had more of this to endure than we did. The volunteers at the aid station/turn around point were incredible. They were only able to get there in their Jeep, and luckily it wasn’t muddy like the previous year. After getting off of the trail part, I was so ecstatic that everything else didn’t seem so bad. I was so happy to get back to that lighthouse! Some of the volunteers were there for multiple days, so it was great to have their support and remember us from the previous days.

TIPS: If you are doing the trifecta, I suggest getting to Bear Lake a few days before the packet pickup. We thought we would explore after the races, but we were exhausted. There are so many things that this little area has to offer, and I’m sad we didn’t get to do much. Leave Bear Lake the day after. This way you can relax. We drove back to Salt Lake after the 3rd race, and I wish we would have stayed. Be prepared for any weather. We experienced an Oklahoma-like thunderstorm on one of the days after the race. I was shocked! Look at the condo rentals. We rented a home that was GORGEOUS and perfect for our trip. I also suggest staying in Garden City. It’s the most “central” to all races. We used Vacasa to rent a home and still have the link to our rental, if interested.

Specific To This Race:
The course began and finished in the grass, which was NOT ideal. The previous year’s participants had talked about horrible mosquitoes on this course, and the race people were prepared with bug spray for the participants. This was so nice! The cops were really nice and friendly. The course was a down and back, which went mostly uphill and then back down. This was probably my favorite course of the trifecta. The roads weren’t closed, which wasn’t a big deal other than the asshole drivers going 70+ and not caring about the race/participants. There were even semis (big rigs, whatever you call them) that sped by. Super scary and annoying! The aid stations were well stocked with a variety of options and amazing volunteers! This course was the furthest from the “main” area (where Cody’s is), but the drive was beautiful!

Specific To This Race:
This was the worst course of the 3. They had changed from the previous year’s course to this one last minute. The one before was along the lake, but this one was pretty far from it. It was a down and back course. It was paved for maybe the first mile or so. This was a sparsely populated neighborhood, so a few houses. The rest of the course was country roads that were a combination of dirt and gravel. This was basically farmland. It was gorgeous, but boring scenery. The mosquitoes were HORRIBLE on this course. There was one area where they were in huge swarms like gnats. The road was not closed, so there were cars traveling up and down the roads. Some of these were participants and/or spectators, which is understandable, but it made the conditions worse with the dirt and gravel flying up. By the time I finished, it was raining, so there weren’t many people at the finish and I didn’t explore the food selections. The race people at the finish line were great and super supportive. The aid stations were well stocked with a variety of items and the volunteers were amazing!

I wish that I could do the 2020 race! I will do this race every year as long as time and money allows. The directors are amazing! They truly work to improve this event each year. The swag is always amazing. For 2020’s race, they even had people vote for a design. Previous years have had multi-year themed medals, but 2019 was the last year for this. Some people loved this and some hated it. The challenge swag item changes each year—over the years it’s been a medal, hat, shirt, etc. Those are the ones I can remember. The course stays the same each year, I think. Again, based on my memory. It isn’t too difficult or terrible either. There is a VERY steep and long incline at mile 9, which you can see in the elevation map. Other than that, the hills aren’t too crazy. There are great volunteers at water stops that are constantly cheering. There are also great spectators throughout. The post race festival, food, and drink are amazing. Probably my favorite of all the races I’ve done. They usually have the normal things (bagels, fruit, water, Powerade) and ice cream, fruit cups, and yogurt. I usually have a bag full of goodies to enjoy after the race and to take for snacking later. They still let us inside where the expo is, which is amazing when the weather is crappy. Seriously, one of the best races I’ve ever done. You need to do it!

I have done this race many times! The course was a little different due to construction in Tulsa. The medal was great, as usual. We were persuaded at another expo by the event jacket, and we were thoroughly disappointed with the actual product. The expo was smaller than previous years. The post race experience was decent, as usual. There were many different options for food and drink. The finish festival was great, as always. The weather was amazing, which helped! The police officers dealing with the time limit were absolutely horrible. They were so rude that I took a picture of a specific cop and his car’s license. We finished ahead of the time limit, too. I didn’t have a break down of the time limit and mile times to reference, but it didn’t seem like we were behind that either. The cop sped by in his car, back and forth, several times. He was screaming at participants to get off the road and onto the sidewalk. Once we did, there weren’t even cars allowed to be on the road, so it was a moot point. I have done this race MANY times, and it had never been like that before. This wasn’t the race’s fault, but I did tell them in their post-event survey. I didn’t do it this year, so I don’t know if it was better or not.

Every year is better! This race is near and dear to my heart. The cause is amazing, and they really honor the victims and those impacted by the Murrah Bombing in OKC. The crowd is amazing every year, even with bad weather. The post race food is always great! Carls Jr burgers in addition to the normal things (bagels, oranges, bananas, etc). The organization of the HUGE crowd and participants is getting better each year too. If you only do one Oklahoma race, this has to be it!

I love this race so much! This year, I was a week from having a stomach virus. I thought I was well enough to do the race, but about 6/7 miles in I couldn’t go on. The race people and cops were amazing with getting me to the finish. It sucked that I didn’t complete it, but I’m thankful for all of the support from the race people. You need to do this race! We stay at a hotel close to the start line, which is great for the cold before the start, I think! Then we take a shuttle from the finish line. The MM/HF always have a VIP area that has great food and beer to have and great networking fun! If you want to be a MM/HF, qualify before this race! They usually have a booth at the expo with merch.

This race is famous for its massive medals, and the year I completed it did NOT disappoint!! The expo was quite large, which was exciting. It was close to the start/finish, which was very helpful for pre and post race. The course was very hilly. If you know about Little Rock topography, you know, but if you don’t, check the elevation map. There were some difficult parts of the course. The course support was great! This race adds random things to the course that other races don’t (I won’t spoil them for you). This race is VERY runner friendly both elite and very slow turtles! They work hard every year to make it a one of a kind experience. The theme is always a big reveal by the directors and they really take pride in these. The swag is wonderful. This is a bucket list race, for sure!

I absolutely LOVED this race! This was the 2nd race of my back to back marathons and after 6 hours of puddles and rivers, it was brutal. In judging it without my blisters and pain, it wasn’t that horrible! The course was pretty flat and the crowd support was great. The “expo” was just a few vendors and some old school southern belles. It was really welcoming. The official swag wagon was a group of ladies known as the “balloon ladies”. They were the only reason I completed the race. This race benefitted an adult special needs facility, and those adults were the ones giving the medals. They also hand paint each medal, which is so special. For the back to back, these adults also painted a canvas which had this race and the Mississippi Blues logos on it. On the back, it had the bio of the person that painted it. This was the coolest thing I’ve received from any race. I highly suggest this! I know there are other and bigger races in Alabama, but this one is a must do!

The swag for this race is amazing! This year, the emblem gave tribute to BB King, as he had died in 2015. The “expo” was a little convention like, but still great! This race partnered with the First Light marathon for a back to back experience. The swag for this race was great! There was a BB King on it with a guitar pick. Very cool. The course was very flat, but the roads in Jackson have many, many potholes. The university’s band played for us on the first mile. The weather was not too bad, considering it was January. It did rain and storm pretty bad, but they allowed the slow marathoners to continue. The post race stuff was great! They had pizzas and because I’m a slow marathoner, I got to take a full pizza! I really enjoyed this race and would love to do it again. I definitely recommend it!

This year was a fun one! There are so many people that come out with snacks, drinks, alcohol, etc. and every year, I’m afraid I will puke or won’t finish and don’t partake. This year, my group decided that we were going to have fun and not care about time. We had popsicles, bacon, chocolate, donuts, chicken nuggets, shots of fireball, shots of vodka, beer, full hotdogs, mimosas, among other things! The crowd was amazing! Every year they are! This was the first year in OKC, so there were obviously going to be some bumps in the road. It started early, so there were some areas that were scary in the dark, but only because I know the area. There were police in those areas, of course. Some of the water stops ran out of cups and/or water. There was not a lot of crowd support, but not surprising as the first year. The race staff was great! They made sure that people stayed and cheered for the final finishers, which was truly heartwarming! The post race experience was great! The swag was amazing too. This race started out lovely. It was a small race, but was organized. I was only doing this race to qualify for Marathon Maniacs, so I was just looking for an official race time. The website was not clear on their policy. I was at about mile 14 and knew I wasn’t going to finish in the time allowed. I began asking whoever I could see on the course about their policy (timer stays up until last finish, everything stops at the time limit, etc) and got conflicting answers. I was the last person and had the cop swag wagon behind me. I asked him to ask about the policy, and he radioed to his guys to find out. We were told that I would not get an official finish time if it were beyond the course time limit, and we double and triple checked. I was taken back to the finish line because I was not going to make it. When I got to the finish, I talked to someone in charge and was told that I would have had an official finish time. When I tried to talk to the lady in charge at the race, she was very rude to me. I tried to contact the people that put on the race about this interaction, and the person that responded was the same woman and was even more rude. I was not impressed with how they responded to me and the situation. I refuse to be a part of any race this company puts on.

This was an amazing experience! The finish line is inside the baseball stadium. The course was rough, but as described. Mile 13 had a LARGE downhill that was dangerous. This race is very strict about their finish time. They will allow you to continue on sidewalks if it is after the allotted time, but aid stations, mile markers, etc are taken down at the time limit for that area. The medals are great and they did a jacket instead of a shirt. This was a nice change! I would recommend this race to anyone! Just make sure you can complete it easily within the time limit.

This was not my first Memorial, but it was my first Memorial full. This was about 2 weeks after the Boston Marathon bombing, which made it even more emotional than previous races. The thing I love the most about the Memorial is the reason it is put on and how much it exemplifies the resilience of Oklahoma City. As for the marathon course compared to the half marathon course, there were far less people along the course. The part along Lake Hefner was beautiful, but very windy. Continuous changes for the better with the race directors, too!
