The weather started out with a light fog and that was just right, the fog burned off @ 11:30 and was partly cloudy but the temp was still nice. The course had the same hills as last year but the wind was absent so I finished the race strong even though it was my 3rd marathon in 23 days. The promotion of the race went on without a hitch and the volunteers were great.

The Race went off on time the weather cooperated and the aid stations were in just the right locations. The race size is just right so you don’t feel crowded but there is always someone to run with. The crowd was enthusiastic and the finish line party was great. I always expect a good race when I run this and have nor been disappointed yet. I was sadden with the expo not being at De Loche winery but Sports basement did a good job and we used the coupons to go wine tasting out at De Loche anyway.

The production of the rave was supported throughout the Duluth area, the expo was top notch, the entertainment was great at the pre and post race party’s. The swag was great and the course was difficult enough to make it fun. There were plenty of aid stations and the only drawback was that even though there were a lot of porta potys at the start of the full and half and finish there was not enough throughout the course so there was always a line of runners to wait behind.
The only thing about the rave that could not be controlled was the weather, the marathon was run in fog and that was perfect unless you wanted to see the great views, parts of the course was rained on and the end of the race the weather stayed cool enough that you had to get the foil blanket to ward off the chill. BUT the 5K on the night before the race was hot and humid and had a great view. I’ll go without the view if I had my choice.
I would rate this a must run marathon if only to see how it is when an entire community gets behind and supports a race and the runners.

The race started with a bus ride up to the start, the time to board the bus was from 6:30 -6:45 so it was not as early as I am used to so I enjoyed the extra sleep. The race started at 8 AM from the Shasta dam and went down hill for the begining miles. the course then had a gradule uphill from mile 7-13 then againg from 14-16; that was more than I expected. the last 10 miles were rolling hills with a short and steep hill at mile 23. the finish going over the Sundial bridge was nice. The volunteers were great, the aid stations spread @ 3 miles apart, but the toilets were the fixed ones from the parks and they were few and far between. Overall a nice smalltown race and I will prabaly run it again next year.
