I was expecting this race to be gorgeous but it definitely didn’t live up to the hype. It was extremely hilly, which wasn’t really told to runners, and you just saw a lot of the same. The course was also poorly measured…my own watch a long with several other people’s marked it .5 miles longer than it should’ve been. My half was 13.6 not 13.1. The one positive was that the aide station volunteers were extremely sweet and supportive, along with all the volunteers I encountered. They were the highlight of the race for me.

For me, it was pretty hilly and challenging, so don’t think it’s a course for a personal best. It’s not a crowded race, which is nice since it’s on dirt roads through vineyards. Any more crowded and it would get jammed up. It’s really nice to run most the whole distance on trails and still have all the support of a large race.

I flew from Michigan to visit family and run this race and I would do it again in a heartbeat! I run marathons and ultra marathons to experience different race venues, experiences and this race is the perfect way to experience Northern California wine country! The rolling, hilly course wound thru spectacular vineyards that were vibrant with autumn colors and the hot air balloon that emerged over the hills just added to the beauty. It is hilly but at the top of the hills the views were incredible and worth the increasing heart rate to get there 🙂 The race directors were wonderful and things were organized beautifully; the ONLY thing I would offer improvement on would be ensuring that there was enough water and post-race food for the marathoners when they finished….it must be difficult to plan amounts of food and water when shorter races are finishing so much earlier (and I was not a back-of -the-pack runner so there were a lot more people coming in after). The prizes were wonderful and so appropriate: Wine bottles, Champagne, Beer, lol. This was, hands down, one of the most beautiful marathons I have run; keep it up!!

Very kind volunteers and organizers, and everyone was very straightforward and forthcoming when there was concern that the wine country fires might but the race at risk. I’ll be back!

I signed up for this race a week after fires devastated parts of Sonoma County. The race organizers had outstanding communication before the race, gave several options to runners due to the impact on the wildfires on the area and were incredibly flexible. They even modified their plans and donated some of the proceeds to fire relief funds. The course is somewhat hilly through rolling vineyards with outstanding views. There were at least 4 water stops during the 10K staffed with friendly volunteers plus free beer, wine and a cooked breakfast at the end. Swag includes a long sleeve tech shirt plus a nice medal. Free photos too! I will definitely be going back to this race!

This race has some hills so train for it. It always seems longer than what my GPS watch says, at any distance. But that is okay b ecausse you get lots of beer and wine and omelette-breakfast type foods served up by some awesome firefighters. So you need to burn it off. We had a great time and will be repeat customers. The organizers have so much heart and are donating proceeds to fire relief efforts in Sonoma county.

Great for being easy on the knees, as this trail is exclusively is on dirt. Lots of windy trails through a vineyard, absolutely beautiful. Volunteers are amazing people. The post-race festivities were awesome, with wonderful food and drink… and live music! A lot of the proceeds go to the Dolly Parton foundation for books for kids. My only complaint is that the race can be confusing (lots of turns and runners crossing paths, so pay attention!) when it is exclusively in a vineyard, as the runners are going in all different directions. Just a thought.

I ran the 10k last year and the 1/2 marathon this year. It is a beautiful course through sometimes rough terrain. I thought it was a little disorganized at the end and also a bit sadistic to put the toughest muddy wet and vertical parts in the last 3 miles but overall it was a great run. The fact that it ends with a full breakfast, beer and wine, and a swinging fun band is just icing on the cake. I’ll do it again next year for sure.

I used to live in San Francisco, and one of the things I hated the most about running races there is how crowded it was- takes a lot of energy to dodge people. You won’t have this problem at Cloverdale. Extremely well-organized race, all the people who work it are the nicest, good swag and sustenance, beautiful scenery! I recommend wearing trail-running shoes as most of the course is dirt, sometimes uneven. It can be a mind game after a while to run by the same areas and loops more than once- but they do a really good job with direction and signs!
