This was a tough course, with rolling hills at the start and finish. But, as a CIM training run, this was a good reality check. Being able to run with the same pacers that will be pacing the marathon was extremely helpful.

The good: CIM pacers, rolling hills to mimic the marathon course, nice finisher’s medal and beanie, pizza and beer after the race, great volunteers encouraging all the runners, and all the proceeds go towards upkeep on the Parkway!

The bad: not enough toilets on the course (one per aid station) so there were lines at every stop. (On the plus side, they had plenty of TP.)

Overall, I’d recommend this race for anyone running the marathon to help adjust your race day strategy and fine tune your pacing, fuel and electrolytes.

This event is promoted as more of a training run than a race (although there’s a medal, a finish time, a course, aid stations, etc…) because it’s meant to be the 20 mile run needed 4 weeks before the California International Marathon.

I signed up for the 20 miler, not because I needed a training run or because I am running CIM. Just cuz, when do you ever get to run a 20 mile race?!

Enjoyed the event overall. Very well supported and great crowd. The 20 Miler had 3X the number of runners as did the Half! Pacers throughout. No shirt given out (good! I don’t need more) but we did get a great quality beanie. Nice enough medal.

I may have to do this event again, just because of it being 20 miles!

This race is so perfectly timed with CIM and its worth signing up for. It is always on Daylight savings time too. The last two years I have done this run I have driven up from the South Bay at 4am (when it really feels like 5am).

They use all the same pacers and aid stations as CIM. I did find I was ultimately faster at CIM though, so whichever pacer you follow may not be the same one you follow come race day.

The scenery is nice, the course is pretty much flat and fast. Free pizza and beer at the end too!

The first 13.1 miles is the same course as the American River Parkway Half Marathon. It is not quite as flat as I remember from reviewing the American River Parkway Half Marathon, but it wasn’t too bad even for me (I live in a very flat city, so I never do hills.) The scenery was pretty nice.

At the 13.1 mile mark, the half marathoners go through their finish line, while the 20 milers keep on going.

There was a little bit more climbing on the last 6.9 miles, but it wasn’t too bad either. The scenery wasn’t as good as on the first 13.1 miles.

The weather was nice — it started in the low 50s. For slow runners like me, it was fairly hot at the end.

The course was easy with just a rolling elevation to keep it interesting, the race was well organized and the after the race was great with pizza and beer to wind down and massage if you wanted. The weather was perfect, @ 60 degrees and lite winds.
