Great course. Rolling hills in the first half, then mostly flat on the second half.
Lots of water/electrolyte stations. Awesome volunteers. Run mostly through downtown Hartford and residential neighborhoods of West and East Harford. Great crowd support as well from the locals.
Got my PR for a non-downhill race by finally getting a sub-4, so really happy about that. The cloudy, cool weather helped with that significantly.

– great destination run through the mad river valley
– run through green foliage, mountain views, farmland, red barns, covered bridges
– lots of aid stations and volunteers cheering you on
– very hilly. not even just rolling hills, but some are quite an incline
– book early, as race is in and near small towns. mostly small hotels and bed and breakfast types. downtown burlington is only about 40 mins away. even Vermont’s biggest city has a small town feel to it (which is great!)

– followed covid protocols for safety. very drawn out staggered start. felt 100% safe. my assigned start was a bit late for my taste, so it definitely got warm. some shade along the course, but most was on open trails.
– trail was definitely wide enough to pass someone safely, especially once you pass the half-marathon turnaround point.
– beautiful scenery of fall foliage, farm lands along a paved trail. some street crossings, but very minimal
– most of the course is flat (or very slight inclines), but there are a couple of serious hills that just seem to kept going on and on. out and back course, so whatever is up will be down and vice versa
– nice medal and great looking hoodie
– awesome volunteers, but very few spectators along the route. could be a covid thing, but i think it’s just the location of the race course.

– course elevation map looked fairly flat with some elevation, but actual course seemed a lot hillier. i actually didn’t mind as much, since i’d rather have hills that all out flat.
– nice fall scenery along the course, but i wish there were more ocean views, since it is the ocean state
– mostly on the side of the road, through beach area neighborhoods and business areas
– due to covid, aid stations were further apart, so make sure you’re well stocked
– nice fall weather. chilly start in the high 40s, but once you’re moving, you appreciate the cooler temps
– some patches of wind along the course
– strictly followed covid-19 race protocols, and i felt 100% safe

– great support and aid stations
– not overly scenic, but you do run a few miles next to the Missouri river and through downtown
– course was a bit longer (in my opinion). i asked about 10 other runners and we all had about almost 0.8-0.9 miles more on our watches than the posted mile markers. was a little mentally draining to say the least.
– followed covid-19 protocols. felt 100% safe

– very humid
– i did like the international feel to the race though. a lot of japanese tourists running the race, which added a great unique flavor to the race.

– beautiful green scenery. lots of shade!
– tunnel just after the start line. in a completely dark tunnel for what seemed like a couple of miles. definitely will need a headlamp. a little bit disorienting being in there so long, but the rest of the course is just beautiful.

– first quarter of the race is in maine, from the west quoddy head lighthouse, then most of the race is in campobello island, canada, and finishing back in lubec
– first quarter is flat, but campobello island is hilly
– beautiful scenery in maine and canada
– course almost has no shade at all
– didn’t need to have passport on me during the race (unlike detroit marathon), but you do need your passport to register with Canada before the race
– year that i did it (2016), the medal was starfish shaped. looked pretty cool, but it was flagged through security at the airport
– lubec was such a beautiful little town. made the drive across maine definitely worth it

– great downhill course up to mile 19/20, then flattens out til the finish. downhill is gradual.
– can get cold at the starting area. year that i did it, it began to snow immediately after the starting gun
– great food area at the finish line
– need to definitely train for downhill, and will almost surely pay off with a PR. i had 3 other friends run this with me and we improved our PR’s by at least 15 minutes.
