This event (Run for the Dogs in Blue) used to be held at Quiet Waters Park. But this is its first year at a new location, the Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds, and now seems to be partnered with the Anne Arundel County Sheriff’s Office as well as the Chesapeake K9 Fund (who originally were running and organizing it and for whom the proceeds go towards). The organization is great, the swag is great. The course is somewhat hilly and has portions on both paved and unpaved surfaces. There are also multiple sharp turns on the course. Dogs allowed on course. I would recommend staying for the Fall Festival and dog demos.

This race is very flat. There are potholes to dodge, however. There’s one intersection in the beginning that was quite disorienting because there were runners coming/going in all four directions. It was ok scenery but nothing spectacular-the problem with making any cherry blossom race is that they might not blossom when you think they will and were definitely not at peak bloom. There were so many runners in the beginning it’s almost impossible to not get boxed in, and it’s almost impossible to stop without hitting the people behind you. I actually kind of enjoyed that though because it pushed me to stay at a consistent pace. Well organized.

My biggest and main concern was the weather, which unfortunately nobody can control. With humidity it was ~86 F. There wasn’t any electrolytes at the early stops (I think they got swamped before I arrived) and I had to slow it down because I was cramping, and it was suspect heat exhaustion cramps. I actually just walked the last 2ish miles. I indirectly know someone that suffered heat stroke and was in the hospital 3 days from running this, so I’m thinking I made the right call.

That aside, the course is very flat and it is definitely scenic. I think they did a good job considering this was the inaugural. I would recommend going forward.

It’s definitely a different experience than driving over the bay bridge. It may be cold, especially in the earlier waves. After you cross the bridge you still have ~1.5 miles to go. Parking and shuttling to the start could be logistically challenging-I parked in the Navy stadium and got there fine, but it was pricey. This is a CUPLESS race so plan accordingly!

If you are looking to PB, if you want some nice scenery, if you like good organization and cool swag, this is the race for you. The course is flat as can be so you’ve got a good chance to PB/PR. You get a wonderful view including a traverse onto a military base where there’s a lighthouse. The finish line is on the boardwalk right around the Poseidon statue. This was the right race for my first 1/2.

I’ll admit I’m biased because I’ve actually run this one on and off since 2013 and it’s sentimental because it was the first race I ran as an adult and the cause is kind of personal. Most parts are relatively flat, but there is one rather large hill. The surface also changes from trail to boardwalk to paved road. The scenery is quite nice, especially along the boardwalk. There is no real expo; you pick up your packet on race day before the gun goes off. They do have long sleeve shirts for participants but do not give out medals except to top placers in age categories.
