This was my first go at a long distance trail race (I had done Ragnar Trail in Michigan, but this was gonna be my longest). The course was definitely difficult – only a bit of single track, so not what I would call ‘technical’ (if single track for runners can be considered technical), but it was hilly and sometimes sandy – including the darn power line section 🙂 – overall, it was a fantastic race. The organizers were extremely nice, the race was VERY well organized (shuttle to the start line a mile away was well appreciated and the aid stations were great), the course was well marked, and the scenery was magnificent (I only wish it were a couple weeks later for the peak of fall foliage, but beggars can’t be choosers). Overall, a great race, run by great people. I can easily see doing this one again, and should I decide to venture in ‘ultra’ territory, this one will be at the top of my list for first ultras. And the ‘medal’ (a chunk of wood with a brand of the race logo) is my favorite!!!

What a fantastic race! I had heard great things about the Bayshore Half, and with the spots filling up in hours, it’s all the more tempting for a runner to want to see what all the fuss was about – boy, the fuss is real! The ‘least scenic’ portion of the race is the first couple of miles (and the last one onto the track), but even those first couple of miles give a view – especially mile two as you start running towards the east shore of Old Mission peninsula. And then, the views don’t stop! While there was limited crowd (and even the rice directors state they don’t claim to be Boston or Chicago), the fans out there were very supportive. And the volunteers were incredible! There’s ice cream from Moomer’s (and plant of other great post-race goodies) at the finish line too! Well oiled production and a wonderful race – I imagine I’ll be back again soon!

What a fun race for my first marathon! First time marathoners in the Detroit Freep are known as ‘greenies’ and get a special bib – and a little extra cheers on the course because of the accomplishment! This course was well laid out and it was a ton of fun to run in two different countries on one run! Because the International Half is the most popular course (and the first half of the full), it thinned out quite a bit in the second half, but the fans in that section didn’t disappoint! The volunteers were great and there was plenty of fluid support on the course. Was an awesome experience, a great course with great scenery, and well supported! I didn’t get to go to the after party, but even the finishing chute (while very long) was supported with volunteers handing out medals, thermal blankets, and bags of food (rather than having a lineup for individuals that do, or don’t, want specific items). Thanks Detroit for a wonderful first time experience!!!

I was surprised at how big this race was – the 10-miler definitely draws the biggest crowd! The organization at the beginning of the race was good – they had to be given the delay because of the thunderstorms in the area. Since it was my first time (and first time in Flint), it was nice to see a beautiful city – there was a great amount of crowd support on the run as well. Plenty of aid stations (and ‘other’ stations) to never worry about when the next water station would be. My only real complaint would be about the organization of the finishing chute. There were plenty of volunteers at the chute handing out medals, drinks, bananas, etc. and plenty to be had, but there was a VERY narrow opening for such a big crowd. I think they had plenty of room to work with down Saginaw to spread it out a bit and allow the crowds to keep moving. Absolutely no complaints about this race and I’m sure I’ll do it again. I’ll be ready for the hills in Glendale Hills next year!

This was on my bucket list of half marathons, given that it was one of the bigger ones in the country and drivable. The race organizers and crowds didn’t disappoint! There were crowds along the track everywhere you would expect – about the only two places was the first head out of downtown (the first mile wasn’t really conducive for spectating) and in the speedway (which was INCREDIBLE to run in – what an experience!). While I have other bucket list races, I can imagine doing this one again!
