Our very first leg started at 6 am. Runner was fully geared in reflective and running lights. Within the first 4 -5 miles, runners were directed to run on a busy highway with NO shoulder, in the dark, and running WITH traffic. Our runner was petrified he would be hit. He was buzzed numerous times. Having lost a friend to a drunk driver while running at night, I was furious. Several miles of the race have little to no shoulder. They need to reroute this race before someone hits another Ragnar runner. We have hundreds of miles of bike/pedestrian trails in northern and mid Michigan. Why must they be run along busy highways? I found the course lacking in route markers. I got lost twice and had to backtrack. Not enough porta potties at several stops. Our team agreed that this is one race we won’t repeat.

As my first Ragnar I wasn’t sure what to expect! Boy it was a fun weekend! Michigan is beautiful and the after party on Lake Michigan was awesome. Highly recommend any Ragnar race to those social, slightly crazy running enthusiasts out there.

Ragnar puts on an amazing weekend for the runners. If you don’t already know the others runners in your van at the start of the event, it’s a guarantee that will change by the time you all get to cross the finish line together. Western Michigan provides some hills, paved paths, quaint towns, and plenty of good scenery to run through.

This was my second ragnar. And, it was the Ragnar Michigan inaugural. Even though this was the first year for this particular Ragnar, it did not have the pains of an inaugural. Everything went smoothly.
The weather is unpredictable this time of the year in MI, so you must be physically and mentally prepared for all types. This year, we got rain and more rain. Since you are living in a van with 5 others, “soaked shoe smell” is a possibility.
Also, train for hills. Long hills. Steep hills. Dark hills. Rolling hills. If you love hills, this is for you. If you hate hills, learn to love them.
The views are spectacular almost the entire length, as it follows the Shoreline Trail. Where it’s not spectacular, it’s simply beautiful. Hardly a bad leg on this one.
Strong runners, be the 4th runner. You get the bonus medal for doing this one. And the courses are brag-worthy. (In case you don’t know, in addition to the finisher medal, the runner who completed the hardest leg, gets a bonus medal).
Want a free pair of shoes? Be the team captain. They all get free shoes from Reebok.
I loved every minute of this race and plan to do it again.
