This is a very hilly marathon and not the option to choose to get a PR or BQ, but if you love a good challenge, you will enjoy this race. The course is very scenic with long stretches along and across the Merrimack River. The course mixes in a large amount of trail running (that was gorgeous at this time of year). The course has changed slightly (mostly at the end) since 2014 when I last ran it. This change is for the better and allowed my son to see me run by the Elm St portion of the course multiple times which gave me a boost. Very well organized and the citizens of Manchester took pride in the event. This is a marathon to run if you love a great course and are not obsessed with getting your BQ.

Very well-organized race that is predominantly flat but can be windy (as it was this year). The foliage on the back half of the course was beautiful. Good fan support, multiple pacing groups, great runner support for fluids/gels. The expo is limited. I stayed at the Best Western in Chelmsford with the Baystate Marathon rate and found it to be a great location to get to the race quickly in the morning. Getting out of the parking garage after the race is tough because of all the traffic. I plan to try to run it yearly as it is a good race to use for a BQ. The race provided BQ and PR keychains in addition to the medal after the race which was a really nice touch.

This is a small marathon that offers a last second chance to get a BQ. It was more challenging than I estimated to be. The repetitive loop has a short set of hills on the back side that eventually started to wear on me. The fans that were present were very vocal. It was nice for my son to get a chance to see me running multiple times throughout the race (which hasn’t happened previously in races i have run elsewhere). There were tables where you could set up your own fluids/nutrition which was also a huge bonus. No expo, number pickup was at a Marathon Sports that offered discounts on purchases. Not sure I will run it in the future but if I need a last second BQ, will certainly keep it in mind but it isn’t a cake walk.

It is more an experience than a race, see my blogpost below for details. The scenery was incredible and the course was extremely challenging. The organization of the race is great despite the huge distance. Will plan to run again.

Relatively flat race with long low-grade downhill segments. Starts and finishes on the coast. You run by the football stadiums of Liverpool and Everton, go through the center of the city on Mathew street past the Cavern Club and then travel around Sefton Park (to name a few of the highlights). I loved spending time in Liverpool and plan to return. The event was well-organized, it had moderate sized Expo, not all miles had bands playing and the gels should been offered at different mile markers then selected (7.2, 15.7, 18.3 and 22.2). The festival after the race was a great plus.

Flat, pavement course with few spectators and small runner volume (200 in 2017) but well marked and organized and allows you zone out, establish your pace for a good race time. It is best to stay in a hotel at the Westgate Entertainment District so can catch the bus that leaves at 515-530AM to take runners to the start in Buckeye. The race is predominantly on flat, open areas with fields backed by large scenic hills and periods where the course winds through some small quiet neighborhoods. There was adequate waters stations and GU at miles 10 and 20 (approximately). The temp was cool with a misting rain for 2017 which made for perfect running conditions. The finish line area at Westgate is fun and great for spectators and family. Running through the Luke AFB was interesting because of the proximity of the of the course to the fighter planes. If you like, what is currently, a relatively small race that allows you to essentially set your own pace, this is a nice option early in the year. I found the volunteers and the responsiveness of the organizers (through social media and on the day of the race) to be superior.

The website and online info for the race are great. The pre-race bib pickup process was limited in scope but easy to find and people were friendly. Free race photos are offered after the race which is refreshing. The race had a small field (about 160) which meant I ran the majority of this event by myself. The live race tracking with RaceJoy was a joke and didn’t work well and made my wife more concerned that something happened to me because of the irregularity of the infrequent race updates. The race goes through regions with poor GPS connectivity with likely affected the utility of the app. There was adequate water and volunteer support for the race and the scenery is beautiful along the coast. The portions of the race that were run along the shoulder of the roadway were less glamorous. The elevation profile crushed my legs and made me realize I really needed to focus on loosing weight (I ran this at 192lbs). The impact 2nd major incline at mile 18 (see pic) on my remaining energy reserves made the last 6 miles miserable for me (but the younger, lighter runners that were all passing me seemed to tolerate it well). The funny thing is that the website describes the course as relatively flat. This is a small race with scenic portions that are very enjoyable but don’t underestimate the hills if you are not ready for them. My review of this race is biased by my major league BONK of the last 6 miles.
