This was my second time running the full (have run the half twice prior also). The course itself is great – fast and flat as described. There is quite a nice bit of scenery running down along the Merrimack river and into downtown Lowell. It is definitely pretty narrow at the beginning, making it difficult to get around people. It seemed to be much more so this year vs. last. I think the city must have made them narrow the available running space. That aside, the runners themselves also have always boasted quite a bit of camaraderie – good spirits the entire way. And definitely a lot of local fan support in the early and latter stages of the race. Although, this aspect of things is pretty sparse further down along the river. This is nice in a way as it really lets you set in to the run mid race.

Race production has always been great. There are lots of aid stations (more than many other courses) and race support along the course. The end also had quite a bit more this year with a massage table, ART practitioner, and frozen yogurt.

All in all a very good race – highly recommend if you’re in the area or are looking for a BQ.

Baystate Marathon is perfect if you like a smaller well managed race. There were probably about 3,500 runners between the full and half marathons. The course is fairly flat with just enough rollers to keep you honest. A lot of runners BQ here.

There is a good crowd at a bridge midway where your fan club can cheer you on three different times but otherwise there isn’t a crowd throughout. Part of the race is through neighborhoods but when you cross the river you are suddenly on a quiet stretch of road with beautiful foliage and river views. Fortunately, I’m a slow enough runner to take it all in.

The volunteers are all wonderful. The water station are manned by local schools and have a lot of spirit. There is water and Gatorade at each stop and GU is available at a station you run past twice. The volunteers are what make this race special. I like that I park very near the start/finish line – easy out and in. It usually a chilly start so it’s great to be able to spend it in your car. Plenty of portable toilets at the beginning and one at every water station.

The medal this year was the nicest I’ve ever won. It had a slot where the runner slides past a background of the bridge on the course — I’m not doing it justice — it’s cool!

The expo was good, not a lot of freebies but well attended and easy in and out. Communication from the organizers up to the event was also very good. There was hot soup at the end, bananas and a frozen yogurt bar sampler. The food tent area was at full red foliage fall colors.

Not a lot of frills but a really well-run (pardon the pun) race. This was my 3rd time running it and I like the vibe of it very much.

I say it’s good race for first timers or improving time as track is relatively plane. It has all the facilities for runner. It’s easy for someone coming from outside and participate in the race. I live around 50 miles away from Lowell but it wasn’t problematic for coming in and find parking and be ready for the race. Management and facilities are really good on the way through the course as well as after the race. I am glad I choose it for my first full marathon and was able to finish it. Probably I could have done better with time.

There were a right amount of water stations, the only complaint I think I can come up with is some of the cups of water were shallow. That’s it. The worst thing I can come up with. The roads were solid, level, clear and safe. The weather was a tad warm (but no excuse) but perfect running weather for such a long distance. Bag check was fast, plenty of bathrooms to find and use, and the shoot after the race was wide enough and safe enough for runners to be trainwrecks at their own speed.

This race was great it helped me to get a PR and a BQ which is exactly what I was aiming for. It is a relatively flat course with some great scenery but it is two giant loops which I did not enjoy. The crowds are lacking for some of the further sections of the course but this made sections where there was a cheering section so much better.

a great race that is well organized and very fast, the course is flat and double loop so is you don’t like doing loops even if it is just 2 loops this course wouldn’t be for you. The course is open to traffic but it is coned off well and the volunteers and police do a great job of blocking traffic at intersections and the traffic on course is very aware there is a race going on, they slow down and pull off a bit giving the runners plenty of room. The course is marked very well and there are plenty of aid stations and all the volunteers on course are great. There are stretches on the outer loop where there is very little spectator support and long straightaways. Many runners here come looking for their Boston Qualifying course which I missed by 6 minutes but gives me hope that if I run this race next year I could do it. Great race overall and definitely plan on doing it again

Billerica High school cheering section the best. Course loops past them twice, very high energy and excellent support. Plenty of aid stations on route too. Roads are not closed to motorists throughout!! Oftentimes you’re confined to a narrow stretch of the shoulder marked by cones. Oftentimes full lane is blocked. It’s a small field so it doesn’t get too crowded.

This was my first Marathon and it just so happened to be in the area I grew up in and live in. All the volunteers were amazing. They answered all the questions you could possibly have. The medal was beautiful, the free shirt was amazing. The course wasn’t too challenging but they had you cross the landmark bridges in the area so that was awesome. My knee popped on Mile 17 so I didn’t keep up with my amazing pace I had, but next year I will reach my goals!

Congrats Matt, nothing like a hometown race for your first marathon! And Baystate sounds like a solid choice, since I'm a sucker for awesome swag. Sorry to hear your knee popped in mile 17 {ouch}, but hope you're recovering quickly and already setting your sights on your next challenge!

A lot of water and porta potty stations made it really nice. There was GU gels at mile 7 and 17 but if you need more I’d suggest you take some with you on the run. I loved the timers and the pacer teams too. Get there early so you have enough time to park and get situated (i.e use porta potty, pick up the packet at the center right next to the race). the shirt was cool although my size was sold out so I have a bigger size. You start and finish at the same spot so that makes it extremely helpful as well. I never got my bling because of medical issues that made it so I was unable to finish so I can’t comment on that. The weather is fairly good this time of year so I didn’t need any extra clothing.

This was my first marathon, so it was a PB all the way even though I was shooting for the stars (well, a sub-4 hour performance.

I’ve run three halfs in the past, and one thing I loved about this particular marathon was how well organized it was. No one ran out of water (happened at one HM), there was never too much distance between water stops (a frustrating regularity with other races), and wonderful reception at the finisher’s corral. I was crying at the end, from exhaustion/adrenaline/catharsis, and people immediately came to me for support, “good job!” and making sure I didn’t need to go to the med tent (I didn’t).

Swag was fantastic – beautiful, comfortably stretchy long-sleeved marathon shirt (I normally don’t wear the actual swag in the actual race, but this time, well…), and the finisher’s medal was beautiful. Love the way you can move the runner back and forth – my kid loved that aspect too.

Only drawback? Well, for $100, I was surprised that we had to pay extra to get our photos. In most of my other races, photos came as part of the package. Also, there was a lot of roadkill – two skunks (!), a large mink, a destroyed squirrel (or something) on the direct path. I’m just nitpicking, really, because I know people are always looking to improve the experience for runners – I wonder whose job it is to scrape up the roadkill? 🙂

Anyway, all in all, great experience, and thank you.
