Great organization and super volunteers.Definitely a race for the BOP. Party in the back. Unless you run in the mountains you will not come close to the mile-long steep climbs. The downhills are rewarding for those with good knees. There are no shoulders to run on until the last 10k and not much of it. I walked backward at the famous dip to stop the knee pain. Bad race decisions make for better stories. Go for lt.

The surface is 90% asphalt paved trails and surface streets. There are several tunnels. The tunnels are a little dark but less than 50 meters long. I did encounter a mother duck and her offspring in a tunnel but when all stayed to our side of the road and the truce held. The course requires running many many small tangents to keep on the soft shoulders. The course weaves uphill for about 10 miles. No major hills (steep)but plenty of quarter-mile inclines with 10-meter dips. There were 3 bear sights. There was a bear when I reached mile 11 but it was far enough off the road that I did not have to stop. I did not see the bear. It was in a very densely forested area. There was a large fresh deposit of bear scat(poop) at mile 20. My 50-state partner was stopped at mile 23 to let a bear cross the trail. She was about 300 meters behind me.

Excellent job of course marking. You will not get lost. The 4,000 feet of elevation is no joke but it’s manageable. I was the last runner for 19M. Probably a mile back at 8M. The sweep wagon would pull .5 M ahead and wait. He kept me insight. I normally do not carry a water bottle but I am glad I did for this race. 10mph headwinds and high altitude required more hydration. Skip Missoula and head to Queen Bee Marathon Montana. Small race. Gigantic spirit.

The water stops are perfectly placed. Very walkable with the 7 hours. The course was well marked. Finishing in the Fargodome on a hot day was great. There were more than enough treats left for the “back of the back” group.
