The Barnum Rail Trail Marathon & Half Marathon will take place in its entirety in West Virginia on the eastern bank of the Potomac River. The start/finish is located down the road from the Barnum Whitewater Area.
The Barnum Rail Trail Marathon and Half Marathon is the fourth race in the Mid-Atlantic Marathon and Half Marathon Series taking place this September in the Cumberland, MD area. The other events in the Series are the Brush Tunnel Marathon and Half, the GAP Marathon and Half, the GAP Trestles Marathon and Half, and the Hancock Marathon and Half. In order, the series races take place in MD, MD, PA, WV, and MD.
Entrants will start the race at the southern end of the trail at the park restrooms and head north (and down river) on the trail. At the 3.28 mile mark runners will turn around and head south (and up river) back to the start/finish. Half marathon entrants will run this out-and-back twice to complete a half marathon, and marathoners will complete this out-and-back four times to complete a marathon. Please note that the trail is also a rural gravel road for the southernmost mile of the course. The course is fairly flat. The half marathon has about 374 feet of gain and loss, and the marathon runners will experience about 748 feet of gain and loss on the course. A superb description of the trail can be found at https://www.traillink.com/trail/barnum-rail-trail.aspx.

This marathon was run on a short, but beautiful out and back course along the North Branch of the Potomac River in rural West Virginia. Fall colors were just starting to form. Everyone was really friendly and I was able to make new friends almost instantly. It wasn’t a very large marathon, but sometimes nice things come in small packages.
