Greer, South Carolina is the new home to this Marathon. Created with slow runners in mind and the thought that it might be fun to host an event that would be exclusive to them, this race is all about promoting the aspect of mental toughness that exists in our sport and celebrating the people who can persevere. $20 of every registration is reserved towards prize money for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, and the last 3 finishers are the winners.
Most people think it’s a joke, and some might even think we’re subtly making fun of the slower runners, however we will assure you, that is not the case at all. Too Slow for Boston is about promoting the aspect of mental toughness that exists in our sport and celebrating the people who can persevere.
Qualification Rules to Win Prize Money:
– You cannot be a first-time marathoner. You can still participate, however the awards are reserved for those who have a proven track record of high-duration marathons. As a first-time marathoner, you also have the unfair advantage of “not knowing what you’re getting yourself into,” and that’s just an unfair advantage for this race.
– If you have ever officially completed the Boston Marathon (even if for charity), you can gain entry into the race as an “official bandit.” Official Bandit Runners ARE NOT eligible to compete for award money and for one of the three slowest finishes at Too Slow for Boston.
– You must be SLOWER than the times listed on the official site for your age. This standard will be applied to marathons you’ve run the prior year. As we do your background check, we will match your times (and your age at the time of each marathon) with the chart below. ULTRA FINISHES WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.
– You may not exit the “official race” boundaries during the race. Boundaries will be explained in further detail during the course briefing. You will NOT be penalized for getting lost though. This rule is to prevent people from running a quick 25-something miles, leaving to go take a nap and/or do some grocery shopping, then coming back to finish the last little bit and collecting some award money.
– You may not set up a tent or any kind of primitive structure on the course. We aren’t hippies and this isn’t an ultra.
– Breaks at the start/finish area may not last longer than 30-minutes at-a-time or a cumulative time of 1-hour. This technically means we’ll be timing your poops.
– Runner activity on the course is limited to activity conducive to marathon running. For example, no swinging at the playground, spectating at surrounding events, and no fishing.
– If, during the Too Slow for Boston Marathon, any runners finish in times which are faster than their qualifying times, they will be precluded from receiving award money.
– Early or late starts will preclude you from earning award money.

The concept of the race is fun. Read the idea behind their medal. The Unicorn is an ideal, a rare occurrence. The mule represents an unwillingness to give up.

This race features 20 loops around a quiet, scenic neighborhood with rolling hills. Informal and very supportive atmosphere. I am a back-of-the-pack racer and I felt accepted, not judged — which really means a lot to me. A few neighbors along the course were cheering us on, which added to the fun. Plenty of snacks (a nice variety) and drinks were offered. I would have preferred a tech shirt instead of cotton. I drove nearly 4 hours to do this race and I’d happily do it again.

I run about 10 marathons and this one is my favorite. It’s a fairly easy 20 loops (a little more than a mile) in a quiet neighborhood, although towards the end you begin to feel those small inclines. The aid station is fantastic (big shout-out for tailwind, PBJ , and pizza.) It’s a small field and for those like myself who are speed impaired, a lot of encouragement. Toe it’s less of a race than a gathering of friends, old and new. Also, this may be the only race that provides cat treats for those that want them to feed some of the feline spectators. Great fun.

The field is small, but it’s a loop, which means you can find company or solitude at almost any point in the race. The race directors do a wonderful job of promoting the race to bring people who just enjoy pushing themselves to complete the marathon distance. It is a unique type of race, and one I hope to run every year.

This is a low-key, but high-fun event. It consists of a 1.3 mile loop run in a very quiet neighborhood in Greer, S.C. it is aimed for slower runners, but you will see some people that have accomplished a great body of work in their running careers. There are also some faster runners….so this race is for everyone. The loops is easy to learn, but not boring, there is something new happening every loop. You will love the directors and the people that come to do this race. Great value for the entry fee!

My best friend found this race on Running in the USA. A little back story, my best friend and I are 5k walkers, so when she found 2slow4boston MARATHON I thought she was bat s*** crazy. There was no way I was going to even attempt a marathon. With a little time and convincing I signed up. This race was fantastic. Everyone was so kind and encouraging. I loved doing laps. I was even able to walk one of the volunteer’s dog a few laps!! My feet told me I was done and I only made it to 18.34 miles, but it has lit a fire to try again! Thanks for a great race, that caters to the turtles and sloths just like myself!!

I love the idea of a race where speed isn’t important, everyone is friendly and the runners are well taken care of the entire time. This is the marathon that meets all of that criteria. Adamy, the RD, went above and beyond with this event and how well she prepared under COVID restrictions. I had a slow time, but that was all me because of a small injury but I had fun. Thank you Adamy!

The directors know how to take care of their runners! Although it was a 1.05 mile loop that we did 25 times….. they were there to cheer us on at each and every single lap. Those laps meant we had a port-o-potty at each mile and a significant aid station! The aid station had everything from chips and cookies to gels and tailwind, water and sodas, and real food! Around 10 a.m. they brought out wraps and took our pizza orders! They even considered special diets including vegan and gluten free! For swag, we received a cooling towel, sticker, and mug – I wish we would have gotten a shirt though. I would have paid extra for it too. The medal is great, and I have no complaints there either. Parking was easy, and we could access our cars if we needed to without leaving the course. The goal of this marathon was the be the slowest, and I have to hand it to the winners. I cannot imagine being on my feet for that long, much of it in the rain!

A race that celebrates middle of the pack to back runners, and rewards the last finisher. If you’re looking for a race that each runner encourages others look no further. The race director, volunteers were incredible. The food options and selections were greater than an ultra. Open course but had only cars the entire time I was on the course. This will be a yearly can’t miss event for me.

On this year I was the last participant to complete the race and also established a new course record. This is the only way I could ever win any race.
