This is such a fun race. The 2 distance options make it accessible to anyone. I liked how they had different waves for buggy runners/walkers. The course is a little hilly but fun. I really enjoy the beer garden/after party. The medals are cute, shirts could have a better design. Will keep coming back for this one.

My first time running this; chose the 5k as I was tapering for a marathon the following weekend.
It seemed pretty well organized, this was their 41st year so it was pretty dialed in.
The race site shows a course map, but no elevation. It was not difficult, but I would have run it maybe 20 seconds faster per mile if I’d taken the time to see the inclines ended around mile 2. It is long-ish inclines and declines, not “rolly”. There was plenty of room to get going; I did make sure to get near the front as I saw many folks up front who were clearly going to walk.
The course is through streets mainly 1-2 blocks inland from the water, not much to look at but the 10k may have had more ocean views.
There is no finisher’s medal for the 5k….that is on their website buried in the FAQs. Because I had just run 12 miles the day before, I still would only have done the 5k, but I wouldn’t have been wandering around in the rain afterward asking people if there were medals; the first 3 volunteers I asked didn’t know. But, I like the long sleeve T, a throw back to my early racing days in the 90s when there were NO finishers medals at any race except the Komen races.
Not sure about parking that is offered near the start as we parked in a shopping center about 1/2 mile away and jogged to the start to warm up as many did judging by the walkers I saw en-route.
The after-race food was about 60 yards away through another gate and around a corner; if you didn’t go in that direction you would not know it was there. The expo booths were still up at the finish line, but I had to ask about food, the volunteer said he thought there might something “in there”, pointing to the opening in a chain link fence. Since I wanted to get back to the car in the rain, I didn’t head back to the tucked away tent with bananas when I saw where it was. If it had been a dry day it would have been okay.
I’d do it again, probably the 10k, and make plans to stay a little longer. My first year living in the area between South Bay and Santa Monica has taught me a lot about my new “local” racing scene.

Overall, I think this is a great race. I came back to race the stroller race after winning it last year. I was pleasantly surprised to see a faster runner show up again from some previous years and finished the race in 37:15 while I finished in 38:51 with another running chasing me down at 39:04. I like the competitiveness in this stroller race and hope you can promote it more for the future. According to a runner, the 10k course may have been about .8 of a mile longer which is pretty significant.

This is as my second time running this fun run. My first was so LONG time ago…I don’t remember much about it. I love having a big local 10k…running through Redondo and along the beach. Beautiful finisher’s medal. Would prefer long sleeved tee shirt. Easy bib pick up. Parking was not a problem. Curious about the dump truck barricade and seemingly small number of vendors.

I do this run every year, for the past 5+ years now. Registration, packet pick up, race shirt, medals and seaside lagoon activities have always been well organized. I look forward to this race, it’s one of my favorites! I do feel I need to mention that during the race, when you turn on Vista Del Mar/Esplanade, there was a cyclist riding pretty fast (I’d say more than 8 mph) riding very closely to the runners (less than a foot away) and all along Esplanade you could see him weaving in and out of the racers. It didn’t seem like a safe situation, maybe increase communication to cyclists informing them to ride cautiously during the race or avoid the course altogether?

This was my 3rd year running this race. This year for some reason, they did not have a checked bag tent and the parking was horrible. Usually we would park in the big structure at the pier (total benefit for the city collecting on parking) where you enter from Torrance Blvd, but this year we had to park at the high school (free but make it feel like I did an additional 5k by the time I made it back to the car). They really need to keep the pier part open for parking and make sure that the participants know that they will not be able to leave until after the 10k runners have passed. They do need to instruct the runners to line up first and the walkers to be further behind. Other than these items, I love this race and I loved the Medal. The other races run by villagerunner need to add medals. More people would be more incline to join.

I’ve run this 5 or 6 times, varying distances or both in a year. Aid stations are great, course is well marked and the expo has some good snacks. Free beer is always a bonus too. I liked that they offered medals this year, even though it was at the sacrifice of the long sleeve shirt. The short sleeve shirt was excellent quality as I have came to expect for this race. The start of each race is a little crazy as this race grows. If you can’t get up to the front then its pretty tough (and dangerous at times) weaving in and out of people. I will be back again next year!

I would recommend holding a separate event for the walkers. The race is very crowded and at times I got stuck behind walls of walkers while I was trying to run. I also found it hard to get to the designated parking due to the street closures. That could have been better explained on the event website. But it was a great event overall.

It’s time for corrals or wave starts. Especially with barricading the start. It’s great to see everyone out and being active, but it sucks for runners who spend the first mile in the logjam of walkers, kids, strollers etc.. I understand everyone wants to get as close to the start line as possible, but it should be reserved for the runners. Also – bring back the long sleeve shirts!

I reviewed this run last year (2016) and I will print it here and add a few notes at the end:
“This is an enjoyable run with a fun atmosphere. I love going to Redondo Beach. The course actually runs through city streets and the beach view doesn’t come until your are in the post run area.
There are three runs – 5k at 7:30am, a competitive baby buggy 10K at 8:15am and the 10k at 8:30am.
I ran the 5k and the path was pretty wide with a 95ft total climb. There were three water stations.
The production was very professionally timed and annouced but the expo was a bit anemic probably due to most of your typical sponsors attending the Huntington Beach Surf City Marathon. Parking is a problem because you may not be able to leave until after the runs have been completed which may be as late as 11am. Also it is never clear if payment for parking is due or not. The last three years I parked VERY early on the city streets off of Beryl Street beyond the course path.
The Beer Garden area at Seaside Lagoon included TWO Michelob Ultras this year! Much better then a Capri Sun any day! They also passed out whole bagels and the greenest bananas I’ve ever seen.
There is also a costume contest that does it’s judging very early at 7am. I don’t know how that works out for the 10k people.”
Some 2017 notes: I arrived early at 5:25am trying to score some street parking but found nothing so I parked Crowne Plaza parking right at the start line. It was a $10 flat fee – I do not know what the other parking lots cost. A drawback is that you are not able to leave until about 11 am when the police give you the okay to use the streets again. Not much going on at the expo that early so I ate at Ruby’s while I waiting for the race start.

great event. get there early since it is a big race so parking can be tough. there are some shopping plaza’s within a half mile ish of the start that dont seem to mind you parking there since you are going to be gone before 90% of their businesses even open for the day.

I have done the stroller race a couple times, so nice to have your own race when pushing the kids when normally i am weaving in and out of walkers etc. amazing that a few guys will go sub 40 while pushing kids in the stroller run 10k. course is pretty but has a really tough hill towards the end (especially tough when pushing a stroller) and really doesnt have much if any flat ground the whole course.
beer flows freely at the beer garden afterwards and while the post race area can get a little cramped, it works really well for a race this size.
