This race wasn’t originally on my 2026 calendar but when I saw a FREE half marathon was happening close to home – off I went!
Race day packet pickup is available. Free parking super close to the start/finish line. Probably the best group of volunteers I’ve come across so far. The course went through downtown and a residential historic district for the first 10K. The second half was the high point because it went all along the Riverwalk. Finish line included a cute medal and snack bag.
Personally, I didn’t perform as well as hoped due to bills, heat, and humidity. I wasn’t abandoned though because I had great sweepers escort me to the line.
If you need GA for your 50 states (or live here) and can comfortably finish a half marathon in 3:30, you’d be hard pressed to find a better choice. Besides, free is free!

Free race in Columbus, Georgia at beginning of January. Mostly on asphalt by the river. Portions of course are on cement, brick and wooden bridges. Plenty of water stops, restrooms on course, pacing groups. Good refreshments afterward including chocolate milk. If want a shirt you can buy one. Results pisted fast.

Route is usually along the Riverwalk, but due to flooding the course was changed. Mostly on asphalt roads, cement trails, bricked roads and a short section on dirt/gravel/sand. Mile markers, some pacers, water/aid stops every few miles. A few hills. Nice above freezing temperature this year. Good refreshments afterward. If want a shirt it costs $25. Good medal (see attached).
