This is a new race — it was first held in 2022 and opened to international participants in 2023. It’s an offshoot of the Tokyo Marathon, one of the world’s foremost running events, but held at another time of year. Great city center course ending in the Tokyo National Stadium. A moderate course in terms of difficulty in the city center. Well organized. Entry is via a ballot — and it can be difficult to get a place — but worth the effort of trying. I ran the the new first half course in 2023, but have run the first or second halves six times previously. For: Big city race at a time of year when there are few major Northern Hemisphere options; great, iconic urban course in a world-class city. Against: Expensive; not a course lending itself to PRs, if that is what you are looking for; imperfect race organization (at least in 2023 — e.g., no porta potties at race start!). Sum-up: The hills make this a very challenging course. It’s by no means a flawless event, but somehow I have kept on coming back over more than 10 years. This race used to be called the Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon. The name and race organization changed in 2023 — it’s now the HOKA Runaway Sydney Half Marathon. It’s one of two major half marathons in Sydney. It’s quite a large race and has a great and varied course. But be prepared for hills! PROS: Great course at the heart of a fantastic city; fairly flat for the most part with only modest hills; generally well organized. CONS: Out-and-back is not everyone’s favorite type of course; logistics can be more challenging than some for English speakers; race starts a bit on the late side; start and finish area not great for spectators. Pros: Fast course. Cool start at the suspension bridge. Generally well organized. Upbeat atmosphere. Well priced. Great opportunity to visit a fantastic city. Cons: No corrals or wave starts. Parts of the course a bit monotonous, especially with out-and-backs. Latish start potentially makes for warmer temperatures. Not the simplest race morning logistics. Not a lot of crowd support. PROS: Large, very well-organized, world-class, late-summer race; varied and generally flat loop course taking you through the heart of a great city; fantastic crowd support, better than any I have seen elsewhere; good-quality race shirts. CONS: Late start at this time of year can make for hot running conditions; long wait times at the start to get moving if your expected finish is around two hours or slower. SUM-UP: I definitely recommend the Copenhagen Half Marathon. But it would be perfect if they made it start earlier. Remember to register early, as it can sell out months ahead of race day. An inspiring race — a real coming together of this sometimes divided city. In 2022, it had not yet got back to its pre-pandemic peak in terms of size, but it was still a vibrant event. Not too difficult a course — some hills, but nothing too hard. Fairly varied urban landscape. Good crowd support in parts. Well organized. Highly recommended. Well organized, great course, which takes in some iconic Munich landmarks and finishes in the Olympic Stadium, easy event to deal with as an overseas runner. Not a great expo, at least in 2023. But not much not to like if you are looking for a big-city race in Europe.
