If you want to run a marathon, you train for 4-6 months. You sacrifice other parts of your life just for the experience to run 26.2 miles. After 14 races, I’ve never been so disappointed or frustrated as I was after running the Munich marathon. They race organizers should be banned from ever hosting a race ever again. They sent the professionals in the wrong direction, which then led about 100 of us amateurs to be sent in the WRONG direction for 2 KILOMETERS! Mistakes happen, but the organizers of this race were nowhere to be found afterward. They didn’t apologize, they didn’t make it right. I saw grown men cry after realizing that their months of hard work trying to qualify for Boston were in vain because of the incompetence of the organizers of the Munich marathon.
If you want to go for a long run in Munich, I highly suggest you save your money and do it on your own time. This race is garbage.

I would definitely recommend this race, and would consider running it again. It was pretty well organized at the start, but I would suggest more marshals and organizers on the field, particularly near the viktualienmarkt where there are a lot of non-running tourists. The expo was ok, I don’t really go for the expo though so I don’t really care, but it’s cool to go and see the stadium and where you’ll be finishing.
The spacing of the water stops was great, and the non-alcoholic beer at the end was a nice refreshment. And of course, finishing in the Olympic Stadium was a super epic moment, and really tied the entire thing together.

Not a great expo, at least in 2023. But not much not to like if you are looking for a big-city race in Europe. Visiting my brother in Munich we decided (well ahead) to run the marathon together. Expo, start and finish is the Olympic Park, that almost felt to small for the expo. The race was through the city and the English Garden- a mix of asphalt and park roads, partially a bit narrow with light ups and downs. The finish line is in the Olympic stadium from 1972 and well-organised with beer and water, rolls, fruit and cake. The medal is traditinally heart shaped like a cookie that you can get at Oktoberfest.
Beer and Pretzels at the End

This was a fun experience, well organized and post race refreshments were great. The course was nice running through some historic parts of the city. There was a substantial stretch later in the race with cobblestones that felt pretty rough after a few miles but it was worth it. Finishing in the stadium was awesome, of all the races I have run the last .2 of this one really stands out in my memory.
