Packet was mailed, so no expo. Course was all on road, although a good portion of it was dirt/gravel road. I was impressed that the party was still happening and all of the special treats still available even for the back of the pack. Swag was a cotton t-shirt and a smaller wooden medal. Can count for either Vermont or Massachusetts for 50 Staters!

Race expo was bigger than I expected for a smaller race and packet pickup went smoothly. Indoor start and finish was nice because of rain at the start, but of course this brings with it GPS issues. Post race food was good (BBQ sandwiches and fudgesicles) and they didn’t seem to be in any danger of running out. Course was a mix of streets and paved bike path most of which was fairly flat with only a few bigger climbs. Swag was not all that impressive. Race shirt was a fairly plain, lightweight cotton hoodie and the medal was kind of small by today’s standards. There were less than 300 marathon finishers, which made the end of the race kind of lonely while running on the river levees. Overall I think it was a decent race, but not an outstanding race. I would recommend it to others, given that there are not a lot options for South Dakota and it is in fact the largest in the state.

This was my 27th state, and I was one of the pacers for the race. I thought the race was very well done, with a good number of aid stations. Temps started off a little bit cold, but warmed up through the race. Gatorade was offered at every station and Gu was available at a number of stations. There was also some real food that individual aid station teams had brought out. Everything from fruit, to Hershey miniatures, and even donuts. I wasn’t that thrilled with the course, especially the profile, which was roughly “V” shaped. (meaning most of the uphill was in the second half of the race) The road portions were primarily residential, but there were also long stretches of paved bike path. The finish line celebration still had plenty of food and alcohol left, even with a slow-ish finish time. I really liked the medal, which was the scarecrow’s hat! It ranks in the top 5 medals that I have and ranks very high for originality.

Rain and snow gave the 2018 race some of the worst conditions in the history of the race. The AT portion of the race was snow and mud, while the towpath portion of the race was just mud. Many runners who run the race every year did not finish. Aid stations were awesome, but the course beat me up and took a huge mental toll. Swag is old school with pretty much the same style medal they’ve had for 50+ years and a cotton t-shirt. Post race food and massages were great! There are showers available but unless you’re an early finisher you’ll only get cold water. The worst part was being crammed in the shuttle bus back to the start with super sore legs.

I was the 5:30 pacer for this event. Easy packet pickup. Great medal, but shirt was cotton and not compelling. Tons of easy parking. 1st mile is on the NASCAR track. The big, banked turns aren’t much fun to navigate. After passing through town, most of the race is rural. There’s an out and back towards the bay, but there’s really not much of a view. Although there were plenty of aid stations, most of the later ones were out of Gatorade. I don’t remember any nutrition being offered on the course, but we were given 2 Hammer gels in our bag from the packet pickup. The only hill in the course was a highway overpass in the final mileof the race. Beer and pizza were both given to runners at the finish. I had a first timer in my group, but most of the runners I met (and myself) were also running Atlantic City the next day. Photos were not free or searchable and were only at the start and finish. Overall, this was a small and logistically easy race. However, if I decide to go back to DE I’ll probably try another race.

I was on the pace team and all of the marathon distance runners came in on time! I was in the 6 hour slot and had a co-pacer who was familiar with the race. We walked every single one of the uphills and made up the time on the downhills and flats. Using this approach made the course fairly manageable. On course aid was awesome and also nice crowd support in town and in the neighborhoods. Marathoners and double marathoners got huge medals that also doubled as belt buckles. Even though they were made of metal, the finish they used made them look kind of plastic-y and cheap. I liked the look of the 2017 medals better. There was still plenty of food left for back of the packers and the free concert was still going on.

This was a “pre-packaged” event from All Community events. Similar events with the same swag were put on in different cities around the country. The exact distances offered depend on the particular race venue. This event was put on in Beckley Creek park on a portion of the Louisville Loop paved bike path. There were pacers provided for the half marathon (and I was one of them). There were a couple of long hills, but most of the route was pretty flat. Water and sports drink were provided in 3 areas along the course 2 of which were passed twice. Free finish line photos were included. There were 480 5k finishers and 228 for the half. The only food I got at the finish was a cup with a few grapes in it. Maybe the 5k took most of the food? Swag: I really liked the tech hoodie, but the medal and the pint glass both seemed pretty cheap. Parking is a potential concern, but I didn’t have any trouble as I arrived early as part of the pace team.

The 2018 theme was “What is your Quest?” which is a reference to Monty Python and the Holy Grail. As a huge fan of the movie, this was the year that I just HAD to do Little Rock! I was on the pacing team so I spent most of my expo time in the pacer booth, but there were lots of vendors and fun photo ops. As a pacer we were also given free access to the VIP area on race day. The VIP area had lots of food pre and post race, but the best things were separate gear check and toilets and tables where you could sit and hang out. The race itself seemed quite well organized. The main hilly section was in miles 16-18. The long out and back (18.5-23.5) was mentally and physically challenging. I really wish there had been another aid stop around mile 20. The stretch from 24-end had 2 more hills that were a little tough because of where they fell in the race. Overall good experience and a medal that IS worth writing home about!

Was rainy and foggy, so we never got a good view of the lake or bridge. Everyone was friendly! Lots of aid stations and porta potties. Beer and pizza were available at some of the later aid stops. Great race director who is an active 50 stater. It’s obvious that the race is put on by someone who has run a lot of races.

Colder than expected, and not very much crowd support. Expo was easy to navigate and they had pick up the day of the race as well. Lots of aid stations and volunteers. The medals are unique and pretty much a love it or hate it situation. Post race food (red beans & rice) was excellent.

Medal and shirt were average for a small town race. The course got boring for the full marathon since there were parts of it we went through 4 times. Aid and community support was pretty good with a number of unofficial aid stations along the course. My biggest problem for the day was the temperature and humidity, which was worse than what previous year averages were.

Far and away the highlight of this race is the stadium finish, but a close second is getting to carry flowers to the memorial fountain on campus. The course got a bit lonely and boring on the second loop–required a lot of mental strength. I was also not a fan of the gravel paths in the parks. Post race food and beer were great!
