This is a tiny race, which comes with its benefits and drawbacks. The benefits include the opportunity for an average runner to podium, easy parking, easy bathrooms, and limited crowds to maneuver around. The drawbacks are mostly the nonexistent spectators and the disorganization of the race. I think there were basically two people running the whole show, so naturally there were hiccups in terms of timing, the biggest of which was that there was no water at the finish. I think they were probably stressed and hurried moving the start mat to the finish and with two people just didn’t have time to also open the packages of water and food. Food was chips and bananas btw, which is obviously more than adequate for a 5k but might be disappointing to the 3hr half marathoners.
The scenery was gorgeous in spring and the race took place on a less crowded section of the Trinity trail, which was nice. The route did not match up with the race route posted on their website, but it was still lovely!
In summation, I think they should lose the tshirts and medals and charge $15 a person for a time-trial race. There’s not enough there to make it worth $30-$40.

The shirts are good. I actually like the participator shirt better than the finisher shirt. The neck hole on the finisher shirt is bizarrely small. I’m a normal sized woman. It should not be hard to get this shirt over my head and around my neck. But I digress – I don’t run for the shirts.
The course is ok. I only ran the half, so I didn’t get to experience the part around the lake, which I know is beautiful because I’ve run other races around it. The half is mostly in downtown with part through the bordering neighborhoods. Dallas is pretty ugly so I liked the neighborhood stretches the best. There are some hills throughout but I wouldn’t personally call this a hilly course.
There is water/gatorade every other mile but I think the nutrition could definitely be offered more frequently. For the half, the only gels are on mile 8. Apparently there was supposed to be gels at the start, but I never saw any.
The spectator support is great in the neighborhoods (a contributing factor to why I liked those stretches best), but there’s not a lot in the way of race entertainment otherwise. I’m comparing it to Cowtown I guess, where there is entertainment almost every mile for the entire half.
The big issue, and the reason I would hesitate to run Dallas BMW again, is the corral organization. There are only 4 corrals, and corral A contains people running 5:00 pace to 10:00+ pace. There is no organization by time within the corral. I spent the first two miles dodging runners going 12 minutes per mile. I did so much weaving in the first two miles that my half marathon race actually ended up being 13.5 miles! Dallas needs to figure out a better way to do this. Corral A should be separated into 5-6 different corrals with tighter pace ranges.
Lastly, this race is EXPENSIVE. It’s the most expensive race I’ve ever run (including my fulls!) and I just don’t think it was worth the premium cost. Next fall I’ll probably go back to running DRCs the half and stick with the Cowtown full (which I do highly recommend!! A great course!!).

This is an easy, flat run. I’m not sure I’d categorize it as a “trail run” myself… some parts of the course are DG or something slightly natural, but a good amount of it is a large concrete sidewalk. There is no shade, but the Trinity River is pretty to look at. And good thing, because it’s an out and back x2, meaning you run past the exact same things four times before you’re finished. This is not ideal, but I knew it was the case when I signed up, so who am I to complain.
There is limited food/water along the course (BYO bottle) and there were close to zero spectators/cheerleaders.
I like the size of the race – not too crowded – and I feel they did a good job of spacing out the starts so I was never struggling to get around slower runners, or people running a different distance. The after party could have been structured better. I ended up giving my beer and taco tickets to someone else because the line was like 200 people long and moving VERY SLOWLY.
Overall, not a bad choice if you’re looking to cram in one more race before the Texas summer heat kicks in. I wish it were cheaper, but isn’t that always the case?

For the first half, the race entertainment was ON POINT. They had music every half mile or so and the roads were lined with cheering spectators. How motivating! This all came to a grinding halt when the half marathon folks split off and start making their way back to the finish. From that point on, there were a few neighborhoods who organized block parties to cheer us on and offer refreshments (fruit, candy, fireball) and there was a water/gatorade stand every mile, but other than that, nuthin. It felt so sad, after those first 10 miles of noise, distraction, and encouragement! There may have been 1-2 musicians on the second half, but no big bands like there were for the half marathon. I guess most people run with headphones anyway, but I wasn’t, and I’ll admit to losing some steam without the musical pick me up every few minutes.
The water and gatorade stations were plentiful, as were the bathrooms. I thought they could have had more stations with food, and I would have preferred an alternative to the gooey stuff (like mini cliff bars?). Thankfully multiple neighborhoods had their own refreshment tables set up and offered bananas, oranges, etc. How thoughtful of them!
The other thing I really appreciated was the memorial to fallen heroes on the bridge to downtown. There were hundreds of people holding flags and probably an entire mile lined with the faces of those who’d been lost. It gave me the chills! One of my favorite parts of the run, for sure.
Overall, a really fun race. This was my first Cowtown and I hope to return next year to run it again!

This is SUCH a fun event. Race at 8:30, beers at 9:00am, back home for a nap at noon. What more could you ask for? It’s a fun group of people – some in costume, some not, some young, some old, some runners, some people just there for the party. I’ve run it two years now and hope to never miss another Rahr Oktoberfest race in the future.
BONUS, this is a group of social run/walkers, so it’s quite easy for regular, otherwise unremarkable runners like me to place in their age group. Everyone needs a little pat on the back now and again and this race gives you a good shot at one.
Shirts and pint glasses were better in 2022 than 2023, but I’m proud to wear and use either. Don’t miss this race!
