This is my second year doing the Panther City 5k. It wasn’t the best race last year either, but it was the best option for a Sunday 5k in April I could find.
Big changes between this year and last. Last year it kind of felt like a local run club race. It wasn’t super competitive but there were a number of runners that knew each other and were there to compete for a time. This year, it was basically a fundraiser 5k. Very small and majority walkers. The t-shirt, which was the best part of the race last year, is ugly.
There were only awards given out for top 3 overall. Strangely, they gave me the award for 2nd place overall despite being 1st place female. I don’t care – I was just there to compete with myself – but I’ve never seen it done that way before. Most races have a 1st male and 1st female. The 1st female isn’t 2nd. In any case, more importantly, there were NO age group awards given because the trophies apparently didn’t come in on time. My kids, who trained for the 5k and worked hard to secure the victory, were a bit disappointed. Kids still love trophies.
There was no attempt to organize walkers v runners in the corrals, which always makes for a challenging first minute or two.
There were a couple of people filming and walking around interviewing people for something. Their website maybe? I’m uncomfortable with myself or my kids being on the internet so this didn’t sit well with me.
To end on a positive note: most of the people putting on the race were very friendly and the post race food was unexpected and delicious: samosas and fried chicken sandwiches. Unique choice, but very very good. I hope there was still some left for those half marathoners!
I won’t do this race again.

This is a tiny race, which comes with its benefits and drawbacks. The benefits include the opportunity for an average runner to podium, easy parking, easy bathrooms, and limited crowds to maneuver around. The drawbacks are mostly the nonexistent spectators and the disorganization of the race. I think there were basically two people running the whole show, so naturally there were hiccups in terms of timing, the biggest of which was that there was no water at the finish. I think they were probably stressed and hurried moving the start mat to the finish and with two people just didn’t have time to also open the packages of water and food. Food was chips and bananas btw, which is obviously more than adequate for a 5k but might be disappointing to the 3hr half marathoners.
The scenery was gorgeous in spring and the race took place on a less crowded section of the Trinity trail, which was nice. The route did not match up with the race route posted on their website, but it was still lovely!
In summation, I think they should lose the tshirts and medals and charge $15 a person for a time-trial race. There’s not enough there to make it worth $30-$40.

As I was running this Marathon one of the other runners asked me how many marathons I had run on this trail? The answer was 12. Cowtown, the Texas Double and Texas Quad were some of them. So this is Fort Worth’s contribution to the Covid era. Almost every weekend there are marathons here. And one of the best groups to race with is Cox Running. They are professionals in their work. Great timing, medals, shirts, water stop are key marks to their race production. Great value in price and runners putting on races for runners.

This was a nice, small race, which was great. There were ample water/Gatorade stations. Gatorade was not watered down as it usually is at races. Trinity trail provided some nice views of FW. No real perks for the extra cost of the half. 5k runners received the same shirt/medal.
