I wanted to run the Galena Half Marathon because people I know who have ran it really enjoyed the layout of the trail and how their race went. I was aiming for a sub- two hour but I only missed my goal by one minute. This was a flat out and back run on a trail that was mostly pea gravel and packed dirt. There were about the right amount of water/ Gatorade stations throughout. The start of the race (being late October) was 39 degrees and by the end of the race the temperature in the low 50’s. This is a smaller race with less then 200 total participants, which was good.

I knew there would be a difference between flat road race (which I have completed several) and a trail run (actual first time). What I did not expect was the steep hills, the difference in terrain and the technical aspect of it. I like to challenge myself and this course was hard. The Yellow River State Forest is a great place to visit (Northeast Iowa). I liked the scenery which varied from forest to stream to an overlook.

There was an 8 mile loop and a half marathon route. I ran the eight miles and the majority of the run was around Lake La Belle in Oconomowoc. I stayed with my brother who lives in town and getting checked in was easy. The course was flat with the lake on your left and there were a few water stations. The finish line is right on the beach.

I went to the race not knowing what to expect and just going with my training and what the website stated. Flat course- most of it is through suburban neighborhoods along the streets. There is a point where you go onto the highway for a bit, but there is also some flat trails. The event was well organized and the hotel that I chose was within a couple of blocks from the starting/ finish line. Really neat to see Lambeau Field (the football stadium) from the outside (mile 25) then go in and finish around the field. I am glad that I ran this race

This race is one I choose because of difficulty and location. I live in Wisconsin and wanted a race that would be within reasonable driving distance. I choose the half marathon because I am in training for a full marathon, but there are all race distances available. The first three miles is on the streets and sidewalks of downtown Waukesha, then it goes out and back on the trail.
