After 45 years, the organizers definitely know what they are doing. The logistics of a point to point race can be tricky, but the production was seamless. There were frequent shuttle buses to the start, and since the start line was open for over an hour, you could start as soon as you got there, or you could wait a few minutes for a “mass” start. The scenery is unmatched – 13.1 miles of Rocky Mountains. The route follows what I assume was the main road along the creek before the interstate was built, and while the air is thin – the start is at over 8,000 feet, you lose a thousand feet of elevation along the way, with very little climbing, except for one cruel hill about a tenth of a mile before the finish.

The organizers take quality _very_ seriously here. The staging area at the race track is beautifully managed (not sure if it will be at the same location in 2024), and they go to great lengths to partner with local establishments (think distillery). It rained heavily on race day, but otherwise I would think you would see plenty of horses in the fields.

The combination of heat, humidity and hills made this one of my slowest half marathons ever. I realized early on that this was not going to be a fast race for me, so I concentrated on enjoying what I could. There was surprisingly excellent course support, and lots and lots of water and Gatorade on such a hot, humid day. Did I mention it was hot?

This race highlights Ward Parkway, one of the nicest streets in Kansas City, lined with beautiful homes and churches. The terrain would qualify as “gently rolling”, not exactly flat, but nothing to worry about in terms of hills. The organizational side of things was top notch. I picked up my number the morning of the race (a bit of a scramble for parking, but nothing dire), so I can’t speak to the quality of the race expo. Good crowd support, great volunteers. Well done!

There are several races this weekend, from a full marathon down to chidren’s races; I ran the half, which loops from the top of the town to Point Pleasant Park back to the Citadel. There are hills, but nothing too daunting, and very few distances without some fans cheering on. Everything worked just as the organizers promised, and I would heartily recommend this race to anyone considering it.
