This race had the 3H’s which, for me usually spells a bad race. Heat, hills and humidity. There was something though about this race that made it not that bad! I think it was the beauty of the course, the STELLAR organization and the incredible volunteers. It was tough, but it turned out to be a lot of fun.

I will say, though this is an open course on a two-lane road without a shoulder. I know some runners try to avoid open courses that being said the cars were all very cautious and I didn’t feel unsafe.

I’ve had FOMO on this race for several years watching other friends run it. I’m a fan of history so running where Lincoln walked was appealing! Additionally, the huge penny medal and the swag! Lol.

I stayed at the Lincoln presidential Doubletree, which was the host hotel and walkable to the race start and finish as well as the majority of the things to see in Springfield.

They are known for their fabulous swag and this year was no different. We got these really great jackets as well as a shirt.

I don’t think the city of Springfield is much to look at, but it was pretty well done and pretty flat!

There wasn’t much of a race party, but I went back to my hotel to shower to go and enjoy the Lincoln presidential Museum.

I would recommend this race for Illinois!

I traveled to Atlanta as part of a double state weekend running Greenville, South Carolina the day before as part of my 50 state journey. I stayed at the Hilton Signia, which was perfection! I could see the start and finish line from my room, which was super convenient. It made race logistics in the morning so easy. It was well organized, and the course was packed with people with lots to look at which made the time go by quickly. Obviously Atlanta is hilly, but oh my God was it hilly! Lol I really enjoyed this race in spite of the Hills!

I had been watching this race for a few years and finally it lined up on my calendar to run a double state weekend with the Atlanta marathon on Sunday. The town of Greenville is adorable. This race is point to point so you need to either park your car at the start or the finish and then they will transport you the other direction. Most races that do they don’t charge you however they charge $20. I didn’t love that, but it didn’t dissuade me from doing it. I chose to park my car at the start in Travelers‘s rest. Race morning was a little bit chaotic. It was not organized where to line up and even the Pacers were super confused about where to start. Definitely could use some more organization next year. The course itself is closed, which is great from a safety perspective but frankly, I find it pretty boring. I know it’s a net downhill, but it didn’t really feel like a downhill at mile 10 there was no water volunteers were there, but the tables were empty and I’m not super slow! At the finish, I had a real trouble finding where the buses were to take me back to my car. I found several other runners wandering about looking for the same thing we ran into a runner who had run this race for other times and she showed us we waited there for almost a half an hour before someone said hey the buses are over here in a completely different spot! There was not any signage for the bus situation, which I thought was a complete miss! Even if you had run it before you wouldn’t have known where to go because they had moved it! And then when the bus dropped us off, the bus stopped and no one moved to get off because everyone was confused about where we were! We all got off the bus and had a traverse down a hill back towards the start area. It was really not fab.

I would not do this race again, nor would I recommend traveling to it unless you were trying to bundle it for a double state weekend with Atlanta.

Frankly, I have PTSD from this race, but it’s not the fault of the race organizers! It was the weather! I traveled from Maryland for this race and all the race morning it was freezing! 20 mile an hour winds and it even snows some! I thought the race was well organized. I thought the swag was nice and in better weather it would’ve been a much more fun experience. Other runners who I talked to who have run it before really enjoy it and I can see why but frankly, I can hardly even remember this race because I was so miserable from the cold.

I would recommend it and potentially consider doing it again and hope for better weather!

I signed up for this race and I think I only paid five dollars to run it! I was coming from Maryland as part of my 50 state journey, bundling it with Nebraska the same weekend. I’ve heard really good things from other runners the year before, so I was excited to go. Honestly, it was a great race! It’s a really small town feels a lot like where I come from it was well organized, and I got a PR! You can’t ask for more than that! I would absolutely consider coming back to Kansas to run this in the future.

This was the 2nd race in the I35 challenge. Kansas City was HILLY so I was relieved that besides one hill, this was pretty flat. The vibe was also very chill and I loved the city itself more. It just seemed much more relaxed. I stayed at the Hilton Downtown Des Moines and could walk to race start/finish. I loved how it took you into a park and while you could see a couple tall buildings in the skyline there were also cows and horses. I would def come back and do this again.

I signed up for this race as a 50 state Challenger, knowing I was going to be doing Bridge of the gods the next day in Oregon. I had read the reviews so I knew this race was not super highly rated. Communications prior to the race were sparse and emails that I sent with questions were unanswered. Bib pick up was on race morning. I do like that, but it was a little bit unorganized. The race started on time. I did not care for the course at all. It was a very open course and the traffic was heavy. I kept getting alerts from my Apple Watch regarding the decibel level with the road noise. The actual running across the bridge is the last 2 miles. The road noise was deafening. While the view was pretty, it was a very foggy morning and at that point, I was pretty tired. It wasn’t my best time, but thank God I finished when I did. Several other 50 state challengers who came in after me did not get a metal apparently they ran out. That I find to be completely unacceptable. They also gave the same medal for the people who finished the 5K and the 10K who obviously were all done by the time the majority of the half marathons came in. Organizers should’ve made sure that the people running 13.1 miles got their medals! Friends were very disappointed. I would not recommend this race unless you really wanted to get a double state weekend, just keep your expectations low.

As a 50 state runner, I booked this race a year in advance. I was super excited to come to the Pacific Northwest for the first time and this race course did not disappoint when it came to amazing views. The town it’s held in is really small and accommodations are Hard to come by. I easily got a VRBO about 25 minutes away, but if you wanted to stay in town you do need to be quick about making reservations. I also heard some complaints about people not being able to get Ubers back to the airport. This is absolutely a town where you have to rent a car. You’ll want to rent a car to allow yourself to explore. The race start is across the bridge in Washington and they shuttle you over on a quick five minute ride. You literally start the first few steps right on the bridge. The views were beautiful. The course menders into the woods on a paved course basically the whole thing is closed, which is great. I did have a first in this race which was steps! They were about 65 steps up at one point and then of course back down because it’s out and back well this was the second race in a two state weekend and my legs were trashed. I did really enjoy it. It was challenging, but not too terrible. I was really surprised by the food at the end which was massive and plentiful! Chicken and Ramen and pasta and pork and desserts you name it! My only criticism is that they’re charging a lot of money for the photos and the cost of this race is already high and it should be included. My photos, the majority of them have other people in them anyway. Add this one to your list!

I flew into this race from the East Coast for literally 24 hours. I elected to stay about 25 minutes away at a Hilton in Delmar because it was considerably less expensive than staying in La Jolla. I will say that parking to pick up the bib the day before was problematic. It took a long time to find a place to park, but I was able to pick up my bib successfully. Unfortunately, I had a fever of 102 on this day so that color things a bit. It was a really beautiful course however that hill in Torrey Pines while stunningly beautiful did send my heart rate pretty high and I decided to walk that hill. It certainly wasn’t my best time, but it was one of the most beautiful race courses. The course is mostly open, but it did seem very well supported. I would recommend this race.

I was really looking forward to this race. When the bombing happened 30 years ago, I was a young mother, and I’ll never forget that day. I was looking forward to honoring the victims and survivors. The actual race was so much more impactful and powerful than I even imagined. The expo was really well done. The host hotel was absolutely beautiful frankly it was my favorite hotel I’ve stayed at during my entire 50 state journey! The 168 seconds of silence before the race started wow! I even went to the prayer service before the race under the survivor tree. I’m not a very religious person, but this was a beautiful service that really sent all the runners off with a sense of purpose. I’ve never seen better community support in all of the races I’ve run. This was hands-down, my favorite race out of all 40 races I have run. Because I was running with purpose it made the time go by so quickly and easily. I will come back and do this again someday.

It took me six tries and seven years to get into this race! Everyone said it was a must do and of course being able to run through Times Square and through the city is such an amazing opportunity. The expectations were high, and I have to say that the New York half marathon Hit them all! The expo was extremely crowded. The most crowded expo I’ve ever been to out of Nearly 50 different races. I did not love it for that reason. I wish it was in a bigger location and more spread out. I also didn’t take advantage of buying any merchandise because it was prohibitively expensive. I’ll also say this race was as expensive as a Disney race!

I found through Facebook an amazing gentleman on the New York half marathon group who organizes private buses to take runners from Midtown to the race start in Brooklyn. This was incredible! Got on this private coach and was driven down to the start line and didn’t have to worry about the logistics of a subway or how to get there. The only downside is you’ve got to get down there pretty early because of the road closures. If you’re staying in Midtown, definitely take advantage of this!

I know this race is huge, but there were not enough bathrooms! While I got down there two hours early, I literally spent almost that entire time in bathroom lines. The first line was just over an hour and the second line was nearly 30 minutes.

The race itself was really fun. This was the first year. The race went over the Brooklyn Bridge and I have to say that was my favorite! I did love running through Times Square but the bridge to me was the best part. I didn’t love the stretch along the FDR, but it was OK.

I thought for such an iconic and well organized race that The medal would be a little more substantial or better in someway. I was a little letdown about it, but it certainly didn’t detract from my experience.

I would highly recommend this race for everyone’s bucket list.

There’s always a lot of hype around this race and coming from the northeast traveling to Arkansas seems like quite a journey! I was hoping it was going to be worth it considering the flight logistics. It really was! The expo was well done and I absolutely loved that. L’Oreal was there! I got free make up! That was fantastic! I stayed nearby but not the host hotel, save myself a bunch of money. The organization was top-notch! I love that you start inside! The weather was pretty darn good but it was chilly and being able to wait inside was such a bonus! The race also finished with the finish party being inside. The finish party and having pasta at the end instead of a bag of chips or something like that was so cool! And obviously the medal – The most substantial metal I have earned to date. While the Mardi Gras theme isn’t my favorite I thought it was really well done. Highly recommend.

I signed up for this race as part of the 50 state group. This race has always offered transportation to the start line for all distances however, strangely they stopped this year offering transportation for the half marathon. All of the other distances they offered buses. That was a complete miss on their part. Thankfully my 50 state group provided buses to get us to the start line. I stayed at the host hotel, which is conveniently located right at the finish line. The race started about 15 minutes late because of the incredible traffic getting to the start line. I talked to people last year who didn’t make it because of the traffic. That has to be fixed. The course itself was just kind of blah. There was nothing scenic about it. They also had you running down the middle of the road with traffic on both sides. I found that extremely disconcerting. I heard a lot of complaints from other runners as well. I will say I thought the expo was well done. I also liked the tech, the Bluetooth race timing, the AI results review and the free photographs. If you need Arizona, this is one way to do it, but I wish I had signed up for a lost Dutchman. I do like a scenic race.

Traveled from Maryland for this race in quest of 50 states. Learned that this was going to be the last year and what a shame. This was very well put on. I thought the entertainment was very good even though some of the reviews in the past havebeen harsh. I heard it was just DJs, but it was mostly live music. I loved running through the military base. The crowd support was incredible and I loved it! I wish San Antonio luck with their race next year.

I signed up for this with only about a month’s notice after a DNS at another CT race due to knee injury. We drove up Friday night. Easy Saturday morning bib pickup and race logistics. The start and finish line were 100 yards apart. This was probably the fastest field of runners I’ve ever been in. I’m pretty ok – Galloway runner but these runners really moved and inspired me to get a PR.

The only criticism was there much for post-race food or drink. Small pieces of bagel or half a banana. There wasn’t even water when I finished and no post-race beer.

I loved the course and loved the shirt. I would absolutely recommend this race.

This was my first Vacation Race. We did the 5K Fri nite and the Half Marathon on Saturday. Running both is the Black Bear Double and you get an extra medal. We stayed at the Talley Ho, 75 steps from bib pickup/Expo and shuttle buses for Sat race morning. Easy logistics.

Race starts 13+ miles away and we finish back at Talley Ho. Buses were plentiful. Start line had free coffee and sunscreen and bug spray which was a nice touch. Pretty course but the sweeping vistas. You need to go into park for that.

Shirts at pickup had the wrong date which was a bummer. The day after the race though I got an email from VR apologizing for the shirts and offering to either send me a new shirt free of charge for a $20 VR race credit. Classy touch!

Great finish area. Awesome food Box!

Highly recommend and will definitely do VR again!!

Billed as the worlds most beautiful. It’s beautiful but doesn’t quite hit that level. Hills are stupid hard but I didn’t die – lol! I walked the hills up and ran down. My worst half marathon time but because I ran with a friend it was good. I think had I run solo I would have been miserable.

Area is lovely. Do the full B&B experience. Nice restaurants- fab sightseeing in area.

Organization was great. Easy logistics. Easy to get in and out. Constructively – not enough potties on the start. Race shirt was terrible. No runner I spoke too liked it.

This was my first revel race and my first downhill. I live where everything is flat! Outside of a military run race this is the best organized and produced race I’ve ever been in. The only constructive criticism I can give is that there should’ve been more porta potties at half marathon start line. Other than that, the situation was super easy. I was very nervous after reading last year’s reviews of the pretty terrible bus situation. I made sure I got to the college in plenty of time and it was an easy ride to the start line. The bus back did take a lot longer than I thought was Acceptable but it didn’t ruin my experience. We probably waited 35 minutes for a bus was very nice. Suggestions for next year would be more buses. Also more food at the finish line. I was looking for granola bars or chips or something like that. I didn’t want Pizza.

Found myself to be in NV for work and found this race which will cross off NV in my 50 state quest. Low key start line. Super small race. Found myself alone most of the time on the course. The course was 3 identical loops – not my favorite. Course was well marked thankfully. Unfortunately I forgot my water. I needed more water than what they had available. It was 80 – no shade and hot. Mostly walked the last 2 miles.

Would recommend. Organizers and volunteers were very nice. Liked the shirt but unfortunately was too big.

This is the first state in my journey that really is just checking it off! We had elected to stay at the host hotel, which was Bally’s. For a room that was $300 a night. I was surprised to see that the room was pretty sketchy, really rough around the edges just like the hotel. They would not offer late check out they said I could rent the room by the hour, gross! The hotel of course is where the race starts so it’s convenient but I would’ve made a different decision had I’d known how yucky the hotel was. Very smoke-filled.

The race itself started on the boardwalk. Ran you straight into town. Not scenic – relatively flat. They ran you back up to the boardwalk all the way down where you run past the finish line, which I never enjoy, probably about a mile and a half, and then you turn around and come back to finish.

When the race was finished, they had some bagels and beer. I ate half a bagel and we got in the car and left. I would not do this one again but if you need to cross off New Jersey for something that’s likely convenient to airports etc. you could give it a look although I guess there’s probably better choices in New Jersey.

Easy peezy bib pickup. Nice expo and swag for sale.

Course was nice but a bit dangerous. Most all races I run are open courses but cars were everywhere and you had to run around them. I saw a guy clipped by mirror of a car. Another friend saw that happen to someone else.

Medal was not great. If you like medals – this one was unimaginative and phoned it in. Out of the many races I’ve done – worst one

Easy bib pickup – in middle of field
Well organized and supported even with heat and crushing humidity. Farms had hoses pointed out to road. Organizers had huge coolers of ice along course – godsend.

Huge FREE and delish Amish BBQ at finish.

Fabulous Horseshoe medal!

This was a nicely done race. I love that the race starts out in front of the host hotel. Made for an easy race to travel to and cross off Indiana since I didn’t also need a rental car (I thought). Small bib pickup – not many vendors but really all I need is my bib. Race morning was organized, and the course was pretty and well-marked. After the race they gave out a small bag, Balega socks, a rose an they had cake. They had bananas and water bottles but no other food. While the cake is nice I can’t eat it after racing and especially in hot weather. That would be my only constructive criticism. They need more post race food. Medal is really huge an nice.
I would consider doing the other location they have – Iowa I believe?

Race weekend turned into a bear due to 1600 canceled flights due to a fire in an air traffic control facility and weather. Ended up having to stay another day and then drive from IN to MD instead of flying. Not the race weekend’s fault but a bummer.

I would recommend this race.

I flew in from MD to check off UT in my 50 state quest. Morgan is tiny, maybe 12,000 people. Love small town races! For a tiny town and small field this was very well organized. Everyone was SUPER nice. The course was well marked and had plenty of hydration. This is something I have found lacking in other courses – pleasantly surprised with such a small race. The views – stunning! I took so many pictures and even with that got a PR! I will say they ran into some issues the night before with road construction and had to re-route their course. My watched showed the course a hair short… Same with the person I was chatting with on the course. So, not sure if my PR is super accurate but I’ll take it! They had plenty of race food and drink and even had a mobile body works company there to do massage and compression. This was the BEST! My IT was on fire from the rolling hills which I’m not used to.
Stayed at the recommended hotel – Cobblestone. Clean, friendly and super convenient to the race start. You can walk over. I’d highly recommend this race.

I live in a very flat mid Atlantic area so the hills I was concerned! It turned out I should’ve been concerned about the weather! It wasn’t just rain. It was a monsoon. It wasn’t just a monsoon. It was lightning and thunder. I had flown into the city for this race so I was invested, however I do wonder if the race organizers just got lucky. Don’t get me wrong, I thought this race was fantastic. Even though the conditions were miserable, everyone was in a great mood, including volunteers, law enforcement, and other runners. Running across that metal bridge and seeing lightning in the sky. Made me rethink my decisions lol.

This is the most well supported race I’ve ever done. I would highly recommend it.

Stayed on site at the Canaan Valley, Resort and conference center. It is very convenient as the race starts and ends just steps from the hotel doors. The entire race is run on the property which is also a West Virginia state park. Most of it is run on the golf course. This course features some serious hills and two loops. I’m not the biggest fan of loops but overall it was good. The weather however, was not cooperative. 85 and beautiful yesterday but today 52° on the start and by mile 5 1/2 it was raining and sleeting. Cute metal somewhat underwhelming, but kind of matches the wildness of West Virginia. It’s made of pottery.

Small expo – not many vendors – unfortunately no safety pins but picked up race morning at the start. Running on base was cool! The whole town felt like they supported this effort!!

Signed up last minute and flew 2,000 miles for this race. Small field. Smallest race I’ve done. This was only the 2nd year for the half and the first year for the full. Only 250 running the half. Tiny bib pickup with one vendor. Low key start. Really lacking on volunteers – no one on course for turnaround etc. They advertised plenty of water stops but there was only one that you hit on way out and back. Alot of complaining from folks who didn’t bring water. If I hadn’t of carried my own I would have been really upset. Only complaint. The scenery was beautiful – Organ Mountains and A Mountain. Completely closed course.

This year started on Assateauge and ran to Ocean City Inlet. It got hot so the first half of the race I was headed for a PR until it got into mid 80’s quick. Early in year to be so hot and no warm weather training yet this year. Slowed down fast. It was a miserable run but I enjoyed it overall.

This was my first Baltimore. Pretty local to me but shocked on how hilly. One hell of a hill in beginning. Course is full of supporters which keeps it interesting. I even ran by 2 dead rats on course – eww! This year did NOT support the slow runner. Several friends ran the full and came in still within the time limits yet when they crossed the finish line they had to hunt someone down to give them their medals. Didn’t seem to support the slow runners.
