The RD, Big Baz, is gregarious and engaging. The course is well-marked, though, in spots I started to lose confidence that I was on the course still (and then I saw a ribbon). Limited aid (but I do understand that it is a 21K (almost a half marathon, not quite)) makes for a struggle, especially up Horsethief Trail (about 2800′ gain in 3 miles or so). No shirt or swag… unless you do a certain number of races in the series, but there is beer and some nice snacks at the finish line… and the results get posted pretty rapidly for a race that eschews chip timing.
Soboba Trail Race

Incredibly challenging 50K. Two loops with steepness beyond 20% (both up and down). For a first-time distance race (previously only 5K and 10K), there were some difficulties including only one aid station with more than just water (and only 5 aid stations)), they did a pretty good job. The scenery and terrain were wonderful and the course was (if you didn’t run with your head down) very easy to follow. Plus, the race director will take some advice for future years.

Dallas Running Club has over 5000 members and they put on 1-2 races per month. I showed up early and there were volunteers for parking, for merchandise selling, for registration, etc. On course, the aid station volunteers were numerous, helpful and encouraging. The results (chip-timed) were posted efficiently and the award ceremony (they read off all the names and times) went smoothly and the medal looked nice (labeled correctly for my weight division and placement). Best of all, this race cost $10.

This is one of the toughest 50-mile trail races with lots of severe elevation change (but not unrunnable). There are at least 5 uphill sections of 3-miles (and more) with close to 10% average grade. The 3-mile section to the top of Santiago Peak has little tree cover and can be very hard to deal with in any kind of heat. The volunteers at the aid stations were positive and super-helpful and there was plenty of food items that I liked to eat (not just potatoes, pretzels and chocolate). The tech shirt is long-sleeved and cool and the finisher’s medal was unique. I took the early start in an effort to get a 50-mile finish, but still opted for a 50K instead of a DNF. Also, I would like to point out that the price to run is VERY reasonable.

Race always offers discounts to groups, and while it isn’t the best deal for a 5+ mile race, the permits, the closing of the bridge and mats (to protect your feet from slipping through the grating), the cost is reasonable. They encourage you to pick up your bib ahead of time (but it can still be done race day), plenty of parking, and a finisher’s medal was given in lieu of a t-shirt.
Skyline 50K Endurance Run

This is a nice moderately challenging, non-technical trail ultra-marathon. Most of the course is wide fire roads and all aid stations are well-stocked. At Mile 30 (or so), there is a bouncy suspension bridge (my favorite). At the finish is a nice spread of roasted meats, vegan fare, sodas and keg beer. Also, unlike many other races, you get finishers’ gear AT the end, which for 2014 included a nice technical shirt (with a different color and cut for women), tech socks, and a canvas (shopping) bag.

Dirty Feet Productions always put on a great event. The cost is usually very reasonable and the race director, Jessica DeLine, does her best to put on an event that satisfies everyone. This year, I asked for an early start and got it. This was particularly important for me because I was racing another 50K two weeks later. There is little shade on the course, so the extra hour allowed me to stay cool until the sun poked through the clouds when I was nearly down. The majority of the uphill is at the beginning, but don’t think that you will get down the hill super-fast at the end. The heat (and all of the early climbing) tires you out!
Bishop High Sierra Ultras

2014 was the 3rd time I did this event. In the 50M and 100K, the elevation is above 8000 feet for 42 of the miles. While that sounds menacing, on a hot day, it keeps the temperature cool. The aid stations were well-manned, well-stocked and a welcome surprise in the middle of the desert. I would go back and do this race again, but it looks like it may not be held again. =(

The Legacy Running Store puts on 3 races during the summer months all from the same location, Heartwell Park. The race is run primarily on grass, though there is a paved path component. Afterward the top overall finishers are acknowledged and then a raffle drawing… plus you have a food ticket good for a few soft tacos. No shirt (don’t need another one), but nice prizes in the drawing.

Big Baz is a friendly guy who puts on some challenging courses in the Cleveland National Forest. I fell once on this course (and I NEVER fall) but didn’t get too banged up, since I fell uphill. Afterwards, there are awards… and trivia. And even if you don’t win a price or an age group medal, you might still get an award just for being you.

When I talk about my hometown, people don’t quite appreciate how hilly it is. This Turkey Trot has lots of hills (extended uphills), but mostly downhills to the end. The shirt has changed over the years to a technical tee. Best of all, I get to run by my childhood home and see how little it has changed.

I have run this course multiple times, but for the first time with the Coastal Trail Runs. Unfortunately, it was extremely rainy and many 50K starters opted to drop back. Coastal Trail showed creativity and even put an aid station IN the M*A*S*H vehicle, so the food would stay dry. Not a lot of swag primarily because I opted to save $ and not get any.

In honor of a few friends who have succumbed to pancreatic cancer (Heather Stevens at age 38, Etta Shaftel), I try and run this event each year. It is always around Halloween time and always has a nice turn-out from costumed runners to research supporters. The 10K is two loops around a somewhat hilly VA course and the 5K is one loop. It is timed generously enough that one can run both races (I usually racewalk the second, which is the 5K.). Afterwards, there are booths with samples, as well as free bagels, apples, bananas, and more. Finishers’ medal and tech t-shirt (plus more swag for heavy fundraisers).

The race is well-done and 20-mile loops are ideal for completing a 100-mile race because it is a long enough loop that you don’t get bored and the changing light of day changes the nature of the course. Runners should be sure-footed as there are lots of roots. Aid stations are 3 miles apart, though one is 6 miles. Elevation change is minimal and there are only 2 cutoffs on the course, 24 hours for 80 miles and 30 hours overall.

Race (formerly) began in Sacramento and ended in Auburn, all along the American River, half paved and half trail. (Course is different now.) This is a BIG 50M, with lots of aid and lots of participants. As a finisher, I received a fleece zip up jacket, mug and medal. The biggest issue is coordinating a ride back. If you are a slower runner, you didn’t have the option to use the shuttle.
