The third of five races in the Whoo’s Winter Trail series, set in the beautiful Cleveland National Forest. The races progress from a 12K up to a Full Marathon.
For the 21K, start at Blue Jay Campground and follow the paved road, stay to the left. Start climbing up to the Main Divide gate and take a left. Go up 2 miles of fire road to Trubucco Aid Station. Go down 3 miles and cross the river right before you make a sharp right turn up Horse Thief 1.4 miles. At the top of Horse Thief make a right on Main Divide 2.8 miles back to Trubucco Aid Station. Hang a left back down Main Divide 2 miles. Turn right at the paved road at the gate and continue onto Falcon Trail for .5 miles heading back to Blue Jay Campground.

The RD, Big Baz, is gregarious and engaging. The course is well-marked, though, in spots I started to lose confidence that I was on the course still (and then I saw a ribbon). Limited aid (but I do understand that it is a 21K (almost a half marathon, not quite)) makes for a struggle, especially up Horsethief Trail (about 2800′ gain in 3 miles or so). No shirt or swag… unless you do a certain number of races in the series, but there is beer and some nice snacks at the finish line… and the results get posted pretty rapidly for a race that eschews chip timing.
