Perfect Running weather (mid 40’s) and a fast course meant FAST times for lots of runners, including a new Men’s course record! Unfortunately, for me, my fitness level was not where I needed it to be, so I remain at 37 states in my journey to 50 states, sub 4 Hours. Very well organized. Convention Center is enormous, so plenty of room for everything marathon related. Course itself should be fast with very little climbing and lots of sights to enjoy. I’ll be back next year!

Highly recommend this one for Mississippi. As many others have posted, the views of the Gulf and the nice homes are gorgeous. Very flat and fast course as long as the wind cooperates. Dec. of 2023 brought 15 mph headwinds, but the NNW direction made it kind of a cross-breeze. Aid stations about every 1.2 miles were stocked with Water and Gatoraide. Very well organized event. Police were in abundance on all road crossings.

I was struck by the genuine interest showed by the local homeowners. So many very friendly folks out in their yards enjoying and encouraging the runners! Very nice expo at the convention center, with some serious shoe discounts. Nice 1/4 zip running top. Huge race medal for the Marathon. The course itself is full of continual rolling hills, but none are real bad, there are just a bunch of them. The course takes you through some gorgeous neighborhoods.

Chose the Heartland Marathon in Omaha as my Nebraska marathon mainly because it fit my schedule. Like many others have said, this event is put on by the local running club and you can tell because all details were taken care of. It’s a smallish event, which I’ve become fond of. No expo, which I don’t need anymore. Packet pickup was very organized. The start/finish is at a nice Park area with plenty of parking. The course itself is fairly flat besides the Bob Kerry bridge, which you go over 4 times because it’s a double out n back route. Aid stations were fully stocked with gatorade and water. A few had gels. Police were at every road crossing and volunteers were very friendly. I’m just not a fan of double out n back courses though. Several locals suggested that Lincoln is a better choice for Nebraska?

This small gem of a marathon sits about 1.5 hours from Yellowstone Park which makes it a wonderful little destination type of race. For you 50-staters, this is a perfect way to click Idaho off your list. The course can be challenging if you don’t have hills to train on. That being said, it is an overall fast type of course due to almost 900 ft of descent. There are a surprising amount of rolling hills, along with climb of 300 feet between miles 17 and 20. I actually listened to my heart rate and walked several times during these 3 miles, but it was well worth it, because it’s primarily a fast course after this climb. I did a BQ and had a good time for me, so it can be very fast, if run properly. It’s a point to point course, which means of course that you’re shuttled from finish to start. It also means that you’ll be getting up crazy early as the Shuttles exit at 4:30 and 4:45 for the 5:30 start! While, nobody wants to set their alarm for 3:30 AM, it really is super smart for them to start at 5:30 due to the temps by finish time. The really cool thing is that I was done at 9:10 Saturday morning, and had the rest of the weekend to visit Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons! This race has a very friendly small-town vibe to it. I think we had 116 marathoners and 200 Half marathoners that start two hours later, which allows you to run with them, so you really never feel alone for such a small event. The course itself is probably top 5 of the 50 I’ve run for Beauty, as you descend from the Mesa Falls Pines to the Snake River Valley. I stayed in St. Anthony, which is 14 miles away from the Finish and the Shuttles, so it was a nice 15 minute commute at 4:20 that morning. If I remember correctly, it seemed like the water stops were usually 3 miles apart, which is unusual now-adays, but it didn’t bother me and I don’t carry water so I rely on the water stops. No expo, which I don’t care about. Packet pick-up was easy at the Ashton community center, where they also had the 5$ Spaghetti meal. ( I didn’t participate, but not a bad idea because Restaurants are a little limited) The finish is on the Ashton HS Track, which is always nice. They had everything you’d need with Water/Gatoraide and loved the fresh Watermelon and Canteloupe. Results and Age Group awards were efficiently carried out. The RDs did a very nice job with this event!

I’ve come to enjoy the smaller venues that don’t have congested logistical issues, so Charlevoix was a perfect small town for us. My better half and I thoroughly enjoyed walking around town and visiting the quaint local stores and eateries. Mackinac Island is a day trip away and really a worthwhile visit. 2023 was the 17th year for the Marathon, and it is a very well oiled machine at this point. Everything is very well organized. Appreciate that they do a 6AM start for the Marathon, because it is the 3rd weekend in June. 45 degrees F at start and about 60 at the finish was about perfect and is usually the case, looking at the historical weather. The course itself is flat and fast with just two mentionable hills that I remember. (9.5 and 25) But they certainly are not horrible. Tips: There is a cool little drawbridge in town right near the start that operates continuously on the half hour. The course is designed to start just north of the bridge and is an out n back mostly with all of it north of the bridge, so we stayed just north in a nice BnB, just .1 mile from the Start/Finish. So Convenient and easy!

Ran Fargo in 2023 as my 32nd Sub 4 state. 2023 was their 19th year, and you can tell it’s a very well oiled machine. From prerace communications/Expo/Course/Swag, they have it down pat. Being able to start/finish inside the FargoDome is a great feature. You can’t go wrong choosing Fargo as your ND marathon. My only suggestions for improvement would be to start it earlier than 0730 if you hold the Marathon on May 20. Maybe 0730 works if you hold it May 6? It gets warm on the course and there isn’t lots of shade.

A nice way to knock Cali off your state list is by visiting Oakland and San Fran. So many iconic sites to see….but on to the Marathon. Put on by ‘Run Local’ in 2023, they did a nice job of accentuating the City and giving a local vibe to the event. The course itself is fairly fast. It’s a double loop, which some folks hate, but I kinda like knowing what’s next. It’s mostly flat, but there are some noticeable inclines. Mile 3 has a nice bump to it. There is a 4 mile out n back on each loop. The two miles ‘out’ are about an average 2 to 2.5% grade incline. Not horrible, but you can see it and feel it. Makes for a nice decent on the 2 miles coming back though. Especially miles 22 to 24 are a nice place to descend. I stayed at the Marriot on Broadway and 11th st. It’s about .8 mile of a walk. Highly recommended.

Fast and flat course in beautiful St. Petersburg if the weather cooperates. 2023 brought mid-sixties with very windy conditions. 20 mph headwinds were rough, but they became tailwinds returning to the finish! Super nice husband/wife team coordinate this event. Starts running along the Tampa Bay with some beautiful neighborhood homes. About mile 10 to 23 is on the Pinella bike trail. Appreciate not having to fight traffic, but gets kinda lonely. RD said they’re planning on having live music on the trail next year, which will be an upgrade. Very well organized with water stations and Police at every questionable intersection. Packet pickup location was a little frustrating as it’s at a park and the address given isn’t real clear. I found it, but had to help several others stumbling around as I did searching for the small tented location outside in a large park area. Overall…..definitely a nice way to knock out FLA if you’re going after the states!

Baton Rouge is a very enjoyable city to visit and to run a marathon in January! Ideal temp range of 40 to 60 and a fast course in a mostly scenic area through the LSU campus, gorgeous lakes and very nice neighborhoods, then finishing in downtown. It’s a very walkable city. I stayed just .4 miles from the start at a very nice quaint 1825 B&B called ‘The Cottages at Capitol Park”. My B&B host, Michael suggested a restaurant called ‘Cocha’ and his suggestion was spot on. Their Roasted Vegetable Lasagna is delicious!

For my 28th Sub-4 marathon state, I chose the St. Jude marathon in Memphis TN. For me, this experience can be broken down into two categories: 1. the St. Jude Pediatrics Cancer fundraising and seeing the love and support of the Parents and Friends out on the course. 2. the running portion of it. So, on to #1: Powerful and emotional seeing the parents and friends screaming for us at mile 3! Seeing the emotion in their faces really hit home. In fact, the entire course was full of super appreciative locals cheering us on. #2: Outstanding communication throughout the entire process. The course itself is mostly scenic. Cool running through the downtown area and Overton Park and some really nice residential areas. I’d set the difficulty level as average. No giant climbs, but a bunch of smaller inclines. Felt like we were mostly going up or down, but nothing really bad. Tips: Graceland visit was really worthwhile. (pay for the guided tour). Stay at the host hotel or one close to it!!! They start closing the streets down at 6AM and driving into the City and finding parking is a mess! Really a worthwhile event to choose for TN, if you’re going after the 50 states.

Chose the Gobbler Grind for my Kansas Marathon because the date fit for me. Pros: Very enthusiastic volunteers on a freezing November morning. (real feel of 14 at the start). Nice, but very thin long sleeved hoodies for the Full.
Cons: prepare for a long line at packet pickup! I had shorter waits at NYC and Boston! tip: choose the consierge option when you sign up. (kinda odd for a marathon of 160 finishers) Most of the course is on an asphalt bike trail through a pretty wooded area. There are no killer hills, but enough small bumps to feel it by mile 20. It was one of the more confusing courses I’ve run. It’s a double loop with several out n back sections, so you continually repeat sections/turns, going in different directions depending on which mile you’re on. Once the 5K/10K/Half runners finish, the Marathon get very lonely, which I don’t mind as long as the turns are marked well. I got a little sidetracked between 20 and 21 and it took me a while to make sure I was on the correct loop/direction. I was never so happy to see a Mile marker as I was for marker 21!! Honestly, not a bad race, but it’s one I won’t repeat.

Great organization for a Marathon of this size. I believe 41K runners in 2022. Pre-race email communication is great. I was near the end of Wave 1 in Corral ‘E’. It took us about 18 or 19 minutes to get to the starting line. I was impressed we were able to run at our normal pace very early on . Course takes you through some of the most iconic and beautiful architecture in the World. Though my fitness level wasn’t where I hoped and therefore was kinda slow for me, it didn’t detract from the magnificence of this race. Amazing course support and energy from the crowd! Only slight negative: the swag was disappointing for a $240 race. Basically a T shirt that was too small for me. Tried to exchange but they were out of the size I needed.

Out of 41 Marathons, probably the most gorgeous course I’ve run. RD Mike, does a fantastic job of communicating prior and during the event. Starts at 6600 ft in Wyoming and finishes about 3600 ft for a net drop of about 3000 ft. Makes for an obvious fast course as long as you’ve done the requisite training and your quads are able to survive all of the descending! A cool feature is that it can count as either WY or SD if you’re after the 50 states.

This group, (Uber Endurance) really puts on a quality event at beautiful Pennypack Park in North Philly. They are very honest on their website about the course. “Is this a BQ course? Hell No!” it’s June in humid Pennsylvania. It’s a 13 mile Half that you do twice for the Full. The course is mostly a bike path that meanders along the Pennypack Creek, which is very scenic. There are a bunch of short but steep rolling hills that along with the humidity, eventually take its toll. I used this marathon as a long training run, so very glad I wasn’t shooting for a specific time. Their pre race communication was spot on. Packet pickup was a breeze. Great volunteers with ample gatoraide and water every 2 miles. Very inexpensive $65 marathon with nice swag. 2022 was a stylish full zip long sleeve tech shirt. Medals are very stylish. Age group award was a really cool ‘German Weather House’. To top it off, the award presentation was at the nearby (free shuttle there) German club, where we were treated with a performance of the German Almrausch dance group while sipping our free post race beer. Definitely a unique experience, but not a race if you’re looking for a fast time.

Getting there is the first part! Located in western Maine, the closest airport is Bangor, which is still a 2-hour drive, so better plan on traveling most of a day, unless you’re somewhat local of course. Good website describes the course accurately. It is a fast course overall. The climbs from mile 8 to 10.5 were more difficult than I expected. This may have been due to the weather though. We had 60 degrees and extreme humidity in 2022.
The course is scenic, with nice views of the Carrabassett river flowing next to route 27 most of the way. I’ve eyed Sugarloaf for quite a few years and am glad to have done it for Maine. There was no expo or course photographers, which I was perfectly content with! The overall production was handled very well. I did the Pasta dinner and enjoyed it. The RD and staff and course volunteers were awesome. Now for the negatives….. the mile markers were short, which normally isn’t a big deal for me, but if you’re trying to run a specific time, it would be nice to count on them being accurate. Because most of them were off, the last .2 was closer to .4. Running on the local country highway wasn’t bad early Sunday morning, but by about the 3 hour point, traffic picked up…..I’m just not a fan of running with automobiles. Not much the organizers can do about this, I’m just sharing for information. Same with this last point…. there was a fair amount of road camber…. I spent a fair amount of time navigating around it, but there are sections you just have to live with it.

Pros- very good pre-race communication. Packet Pickup easy and well organized. It was outside in a park setting and the weather was raw, rainy and windy, so felt for the volunteers. Enjoyed the course (apparently there were some changes this year. ‘2022’) . Course: even though there were two challenging climbs at 13 then 16 , runners are rewarded with a nice net downhill from 17-26.2. Because of this, I’d rank it as an overall fast type of marathon. Cons- not important to me, but swag was the bare minimum… a single T-shirt, plus the finisher medal.Awards: don’t know if they had any? If so, I never found them, but 47 degrees and rain, post 26.2 miles, will limit the search . I spoke with another runner who didn’t find the results area either. Overall though, happy with this one for Wisconsin.

RD puts serious effort into prerace email communication. Nice way to click Kentucky off the state list as this is a small event with plenty of local hotels, easy packet Pickup and stress free logistics. Course is basically a series of small rolling hills. Not much flat, but no killer hills either. If you’re a flat lander, you definitely need to find some rolling hills to train on or set your treadmill to 2 or 3%. In 2022, we had a freak weather system roll through that brought snow and sleet! Well supported course with aid stations and port o pots about every 1.75 miles.

Unfortunately, the 20th anniversary Marathon brought along the warmest recorded race day temperatures in it’s history. A muggy 72 to 78 degrees welcomed the Marathoners this year. Besides the weather though, it is very obvious that this event is extremely important to Little Rock. There are a lot of talented people involved and the result is a very thoroughly well run event.
Pros: Event organization is top notch.
Warm Convention center available at start/finish.
Race Medal is unbelievably HUGE!
Cons: considerable hills on 2nd half of course. (May have seemed worse due to the temp being a muggy 75 in the beginning of March) Normal temps are 50s, so we had a bad luck weather year.

For a midsize event (roughly 3600 marathoners), I was very impressed with the excitement and engagement of the Crowd! With all of the bands and music along the way, it felt like a party, which is why my Title is “Mini Boston”! Top notch communication from Staff. Everything was very well coordinated, from Packet pickup to the finish festival! I didn’t feel there were any serious climbs on this course. If you pace properly and you’re ok at mile 21, you are primarily descending the last 5 miles. There are a few rollers, but it’s a nice fast finish. You certainly can’t go wrong my choosing Richmond as your VA marathon.

Hard to add to what’s been shared over the years here. Great communication and organization. Smallish expo, but very cool that it’s in the Corning Museum of Glass. Definitely worth a tour while you’re there. Very fortunate they have several warm maintenance buildings to gather in pre-race as 2021 had Rainy conditions for most of the day. For the 2nd year in a row, I used this Marathon as a long training run, as I live relatively close. It’s billed as a last chance BQ course and this is definitely true. It is pancake flat with a forgiving crushed stone surface that runs along an old Canal Tow Path along the Delaware River. Scenic, but repetitive as it is a double out n back.

Fast course but altitude (8000ft) and 2300 foot descent took its toll on me! I live near sea level so don’t really have a way to practice long descent runs and this one really tore my quads up! Wasatch mountains are beautiful, but the course is open to vehicle traffic (many 18-wheelers) which detracts from the enjoyment of the run. They had it coned very safely, its just a bummer to run with traffic the whole way. Things to see: visit the Homestead Crater and soak in the 95 degree natural hot springs! Great to do after a Marathon! Visit the Olympic training facility in Park City and take the guided tour of the Olympic Ski jumping and bob sled courses. Very worthwhile and interesting!

I was very impressed with Race Director Pat’s emphasis on safety and social distancing during this event in 2020. It was delayed from Sep 13 to Oct 31. Very obvious a lot of effort was put into having hands-free water distribution and having Bib numbers ordered by expected finish times. Anyway, the race itself is very flat and very fast. Very scenic running along the Delaware river on one side and the Canal on the other. Only bummer is that it’s a double out n back, so it is a little repetitive.

Huntsville, Alabama, aka the “Rocket City” is a really cool place to visit. The NASA Space & Rocket museum itself is worth spending a day. Besides that, the course is fast and temps are perfect for marathoning in mid December. Very well organized throughout. Can’t think of one area they really could’ve improved on. Usually, great SWAG. For 2019 we received a surprise 1/4 zip Marathon running jacket! Highly recommended if you’re looking to check Alabama off your State list!

Very nice way to click CT off your state list.
Pros: fast course
Very well supported with Police at every major intersection.
Ample (almost too many) aid stations with Nuun and Water
Very organized from registration, packet pickup, and post party.
Cons: just a few….I normally run in the 3:30s. My friend in the 3:20s and we were forced to start with the 10 minute mile group because they had our starting stage area roped off unless you had a ‘B’ on your bib? Kinda frustrating and unnecessarily crowded at start because of this.
Felt the finishing food was a little lacking. Loved the Hot Rice cups and Sam Adams stand though! Overall a very nice experience and a good way to click CT off your state list!

Simply Gorgeous course. Running through the Washington Pines, through a 2.5 mile tunnel, over bridges with views of gorges and waterfalls and rock faces. I almost stumbled twice admiring the scenery. 2000 foot slow descent on dirt packed/stone road leads to very fast times without Quad soreness normally associated with large descent type courses.

Providence is a cool city to visit for the weekend. Start/Finish is in the heart of the city, near the beautiful Capital building. I did a Airbnb in town cause I hate paying $200/night at the Host Hotels. Ample parking near the start. Reasonably fast course. One nice long climb from mile 5.5 to 6, and a shorter steeper climb around mile 23, but the rest is very manageable. Scenic running along the Providence River and Bay. Packet pickup is easy, not much of an expo, which certainly doesn’t bother me. Very impressed with the local crowd support in the RAIN. Ample water stops and friendly volunteers. Local Police/fire police/crossing guards well established at all important intersections.

Lafayette is a town that knows how to enjoy life. It is alive with music, art and food festivals. The 2019 Marathon was kinda small…161 finishers, but this lead to very easy packet pickup and Start/Finish line logistics. Course itself is flat. Kinda non descript. It runs through town, then suburban areas with some really nice homes. Water stops every 1.5 miles, which is smart for swampy weather of 75 degrees and 70% humidity.

Largest Marathon in the world. Largest and best expo in the world. 120 countries participate giving an Olympics feel of international unity. 2.5 million screaming spectators. 300 bands. I know it’s not for everybody, but it is truly an amazing event to participate in. So cool to run through all 5 boroughs and finish in Central Park. Water stops every mile lead to lots of congestion with 52000 runners.

It’s very obvious this Marathon means a lot to the folks of Keene NH and the Keene NH Rotary Club, who put on the race. From the pasta meal (we had Amby Burfoot as guest speaker in 2018) to the course logistics, everything was well thought out. The first 16 miles or so are run in the NH Autumn woods, running beside a babbling stream. The last 10 are kinda standard fare, but the folks of Keene really come out and support the runners. Very organized water stations and positive people along the way. This can be a fast course, but has its share of climbs as well. (Especially the steep short hills in the Cemetary just before mile 23). The local hotels are kinda pricey, so we stayed at an air-bnb right outside of town. Only negative to me was that the 1/2 marathoners course kept joining and leaving the ‘full’ course so I was forced to pass the same groups of people 4 or 5 times. Found this mentally challenging as you’re trying your damndest to keep pace the last 5 miles and you keep passing the same 1/2 marathon walkers and joggers spread 3 wide. Overall, I’m so glad I did Demar for my NH marathon! Great opportunity to learn about this amazing Man. (Google Clarence DeMar)

This marathon is run entirely inside a giant Garden area called Callaway Gardens. I kept thinking how nice it would be to see everything in bloom, but in January, everything just has a very dormant look. This is a very challenging course with continual rolling hills. It’s a very small event. Honestly, I would look elsewhere for your Georgia Marathon. I did this one because it fit in my January schedule. My memory of this marathon will always be the nice little restaurant I found near by. They had a retired couple (late 70’s) playing the piano and singing. Then they walked around the restaurant chatting with the guests. I’ll always remember their warmth and generosity.

This is a flat, fast course and a nice way to knock out WV if you’re going after the 50 states. Huntingdon appears to be down that has seen it’s best days. The course takes you through some fairly ugly areas of Huntingdon, though the park area was nice. Nice touch is that you finish on the football field of Marshall University and they hand you a green football as you approach the finish! As you enter the stadium there is a bouquet of roses commemorating the horrific plane crash that claimed the lives of the football team years ago. It was a very touching tribute.

This was my 2nd Boston and the most enjoyable. The weather forecast was for 70+ degrees, and I’m not a warm weather runner, so even though I was in very good condition, decided to back off from the very beginning. This allowed me to take in all of the pomp and circumstance of this Marathon. I ran almost the entire course with my left hand out, high fiving thousands of children! I had a complete blast and actually didn’t run too bad of a time. The Heartbreak hills were much easier this time around! For this trip, I stayed in the heart of the city and really could feel the buzz and excitement.

My 20th Marathon and absolutely the flattest I’ve ever run! Because of this, recommend training on long flat stretches if possible. I did BQ, along with over 30% of other runners. Because it’s the last weekend to BQ prior to Boston registration, there are a bunch of BQ hopefuls to run with, which I found helpful. You can tell this race is put on by a running club. Easy packet pickup, aid stations stocked with the right stuff and great volunteers. Very good swag. Pretty course, but only gave 3 shoes for ‘course scenery’ because the view of Lake Erie is covered by trees for most of the course. Only negative is that this area can get humid around the Lake, so keep an eye on this and maybe relax a little in the first half.

This is one I won’t soon forget! Had a great winter of training, and this was probably my best performance given the weather conditions. So the Ocean Drive Marathon is completely flat but is a point to point course on the ocean, which means the winds can be brutal. Unfortunately for us, the temps were mid 20s with 20 mph head winds. On top of this, my GPS watch fell apart 10 minutes before the start, so i felt like i was running naked. Fortunately, this race puts Big LED signs out every 5 miles, so there is at least some semblance of your time. I had planned to run 8-minute miles and was shocked that I hit every LED sign at exactly an 8-minute pace. Easy math…..40/80/120/160 etc….. so somehow, even with the brutal headwind, I maintained this pace the entire marathon. My first age group award and 2nd BQ! I firmly believe the wind took at least 3 minutes from my time and took a PR performance from me. Update: after years of hearing input about the Wind, the Course Directors changed the course to an out n back. I haven’t run it since, but it must be much faster.

I had a great winter/spring of training, probably the best shape of my running career, but as luck would have it, I came down with a case of Pneumonia several weeks before this Marathon. I was to the Doctor and finished a course of my meds with about a week left till the marathon, so I decided to give it a go. Let’s just say I ran at a PR pace till about mile 24, then the wheels seriously came off. I was walking at the end and had to be supported on the finish on the HS track. Ended up in the Med tent and taken to a Hospital where I spent the night. Everything ended up ok. I prob didn’t need the Hospital, but they x-rayed my lungs to verify the pneumonia was gone……and it was. Live and learn. Time to stop repeating PA for marathons!

Nothing beats writing a review 9 years after the race! Especially when it doesn’t exist any longer. It is a flattish fast type of course with some interesting trail sections along the Lehigh river. I wasn’t prepared for as many tree roots though…I actually had a nasty fall….but no injuries. Unfortunately, very humid day caused many to struggle. I was trying to BQ and did a 3:31:15, missing by 75 seconds primarily because the humidity got to me the last several miles. Actually, I don’t remember much of the last 20 minutes. Ended up in a Med tent with an IV bag…..replacing electrolytes! All good by about 1/2 the bag though! Our hotel had a false fire alarm at 1215 in the morning…..so they evacuated all guests. Wonderful seeing 80 + folks sleep walking in their PJs! Shoulda been a sign of things to come! Parking was a nightmare…..fortunately, I had a friend that was able to drop me off and leave.

This was a unique experience for me as I volunteered to be tethered to a Blind man for this Marathon. The tether was about 18 inches if I remember correctly. It was a very rewarding experience, albeit a little nerve wracking trying to call out all of the potholes and loose stone on the course. This is run in the PA grand canyon and I was disappointed because trees hid our view for the entirety of the course.

Boston will probably always be my favorite Marathon. I love the energy from the crowd and the buzz that floats around the City on Patriots day. I went up with a running group from Delaware on a Bus. It made logistics very easy as all travel and accommodations were taken care of! Very good weather and had a great winter of training. The 3rd hill of the Heartbreak series got me and though I wasn’t able to requalify, I still ran a time I was very happy with on that challenging course. Just love finishing in the city with the roar of the crowd! I finished about an hour before the bombings took place. Such senseless violence for absolutely no reason. I’ll stop there.

I entered this hoping for a 3:25 based off of my 3:28 at Myrtle earlier in the year. This is a primarily descending type of course that should be FAST. For me, however, it wasn’t my day. I was surprised at how rough the terrain was at the start (peak) area. Bottom line, I guess I wasn’t anywhere near the shape I thought I was in! Still say it’s a FAST course for NC. Funny note to this one. I drove 4 hours to pick up my Son, then another 8 to the hotel. After our marathon, I repeated the trip…..gee….maybe this had something to do with my performance?? Anyway, the day after our race, the Jonas Ridge area was pummeled with a foot of snow in October!

I was coming off an injury, so didn’t expect a fast time, but the course itself was the hardest I’ve run with tons of continual hills, especially on the back half, when you don’t want them. This course was completely changed after this event to a entirely different location in Gettysburg that is a much more reasonable course. Great way to knock off PA if you’re on the 50 state journey as Gettysburg has some outstanding Civil War tours and monuments well worth visiting.

My 2nd Pocono Marathon. Such a fast course, I was drawn to repeat it. I did a cardinal sin of running in new shoes!! My Son was on the course with my older pair at mile 8 and switched at that point. (probably cost me two minutes). I was not in as good of condition as I would’ve preferred and the 2000 ft of descent took it’s toll on me. I still maintain, the marathon was a beautiful and fast course if run correctly. (which I never managed to do!)

This is always run in April in Athens, OH, near the Ohio University campus on a very nice and fast bike trail. Unfortunately for us, we had a weird 65 to 70 degree day in early April, which none of us were prepared for. This is actually a very fast course, and would do this one again. Again….I’m writing this 14 years after the event, but still lots of great memories from this one. 14-minute PR!! I had trained real hard during the spring on the FIRST (Furman Institute) running plan. (3 days a week of very tough workouts) It obviously really worked, but found out that my body will not put up with a tempo plus speed workout in the same week. Beautiful course with roughly 2,000 ft of decent. At around mile 21 the course flattens out and there are some tough rollers over the last 5 miles. Many miles are run along the Pocono River, which is gorgeous. Unfortunately, this marathon was discontinued, but I consider it the fastest that PA ever offered.

Very well put on event by the local running club. Always run the weekend after Thanksgiving, so it allows you to run off some of that good Thanksgiving goo! The year I ran this, in 2008, the start and finish was at the sparks elementary school. We ran down 1.5 miles to the trail, which is completely flat for an out n back then ran uphill to the school for the last 1.5 miles. Note: the course has since changed to run entirely on the Torrey Brown trail which is beautiful and flat and much faster! Great memories for this one. 10 minute PR, plus ran with my two best running buddies. MY two oldest Sons came down from PA and provided course support and massages afterwards! You run along the Gunpowder river and I saw a majestic Buck jump in and outta the River at about mile 2.5. One of those running memories I’ll probably never forget.
