Overall I loved the experience of this race. There are tons of people participating and even more along the course cheering you on… even in the rain! I would have liked to have the course go along some of the more iconic and scenic parts of Berlin, but you can’t beat finishing through Brandenburg Tor! I also appreciated that they made an effort to make the race more green with reusable water cups. My only complaints are that there were not nearly enough restrooms (and no toilet paper in them) and the expo was way too crowded. The race swag was mostly sold out for common sizes, and they couldn’t keep the shelves stocked quick enough.

You are running on the public, open boardwalk here, which means:
– No shade! You are baking in the sun, and in mid July expect it to be humid
– Watch where you run. The boards are loose in many places. A lot of people were tripping.
– Pedestrians, bicyclists are crossing your path. They do not shut down the boardwalk. So you have to watch out for others.
– The boardwalk is short. You have to complete a ~4.37 mile loop 3 times. So it’s not the most exciting course.
– The refreshments set up was not great. There are plenty of stations, and even though they say they were handing out sports drinks, I only saw and had water. After the race there was just a large water cooler and a few communal bottles of water to rehydrate. So you end up staying in line waiting to get a drink.

In back to back years, I did the full and then the half for this race. The two share the same course for the first ~8 miles. There’s not much to see along this part of the course (wish they chose a more scenic route around San Diego, there are so many better options), but when spectators come out that adds a lot of energy. Some even set up refreshment (adult beverage) stations! After the split, the half has a much better course to the finish line. If you’re going to do a full, look elsewhere. Enjoy the half here and the concert after. I just wish they would choose more energetic headliners!

I only wish they gave out a tech shirt instead of a t-shirt

For a great location it was not well run. Starting line was chaotic with not enough space for people to line up. Boasts about having the most coastline in SD, but you can only see the ocean over a small stretch. The finish line rest area and the beer garden are on opposite sides of the course, with no instructions or guidance on how to get there. So you have runners that finished running across the course while other runners are competing. I think the director is inexperienced and was on a power trip, yelling at runners that didn’t know where to go.
