This was my first full marathon and I thought after doing two halves earlier in the year I was prepared. Boy was I wrong! The elevation gain of over 1000 plus should tell you that your training, nutrition and mental game better be on. This is a BQ qualifier. The expo (outdoor vendors) is not big at all for a marathon event, but Garmin does a nice job of bringing in what you need (gear, nutrition, therapy items). Not over whelming at all and I prefer that to the huge indoor conventions.
The race starts on a hill and concludes at mile 26 on Heartbreak hill. My legs clearly lacked support for the climb and my nutrition should have been better throughout. Luckily it was raining and mild. Had it been hot and humid I honestly question if I could have completed this race. The course has so many rolling hills you can’t catch your breath. They just kept coming after mile 15. There was a flat part through the park which was a reprieve (about 5 miles), but not enough to sustain the oncoming climb. You must prepare for this race. You cannot wing it! You end at the Duke University stadium and that’s really cool. Unfortunately after you’re spent, you have to climb the steps out of the stadium. Painful is an understatement! Garmin provides you with a clear bag for your belongings and you can check it in and pick up after. The operational side of the race is fantastic. Plenty of volunteers, aid stations, hydration stations and bathrooms galore. There are bathrooms all along the course just in case. Pacers were fast for the4:30 time, as they were behind schedule. They just sped up and I could not catch them. 4:50 pacer went by and no one was with her. That’s not great in my opinion. On the plus side, the 4:30 pacer I kept up with for most of the race till mile 19 waited at the finish line for me. He knew I wanted to finish this race.
I did not get my time but the experience and grueling course worth the effort. I can use this to toughen up for NYC Marathon for sure.
If you want a prep for Boston or NYC this is a good one.

This was the first year of the 5k and I flew down from NC to support my friend. I know that 5ks often don’t have the energy of some of the bigger races (vibes , vendors and scenic routes), but this one had all three. Food options were great after the race (arepas, smoothies, fruit cups with yogurt), you do have to buy them but honestly the price point wasn’t terrible. The massage offering was the best I ever had at a race. It was exactly what I needed as I had sore muscles from running 10 miles the day before, the 5k was folded into my marathon training in preparation for the race the following month. My hips and hamstrings never felt better! Kudos to that PT massage team.
There were a few glitches with the park personnel not showing up as requested by the organizers and many of the runners were a bit confused with the route towards the end. I suggest better markers for next year and assigning volunteers to hold up or point to route. directions. Some runners went through a fence with a hole and then took a shortcut to finish the race. I was guided by my watch an knew that I has a mile or so left when the confusing moment came up. The race timing was excellent and set up and take down accomplished seamlessly. My placement in my age was not correct and the main person reviewed the footage on the spot and corrected my place. One last recommendation is the start of the race. Florida is hot an humid, so races need to be done early. The heat is just too much! I suggest starting the race at 7:30am sharp!
The atmosphere, music and raffles at the end of the race make for a great morning event. I believe they are changing the park venue to avoid personnel and route discrepancies. All good though! I totally recommend this race, especially if you are in the Tampa area.
