This was the first year of the 5k and I flew down from NC to support my friend. I know that 5ks often don’t have the energy of some of the bigger races (vibes , vendors and scenic routes), but this one had all three. Food options were great after the race (arepas, smoothies, fruit cups with yogurt), you do have to buy them but honestly the price point wasn’t terrible. The massage offering was the best I ever had at a race. It was exactly what I needed as I had sore muscles from running 10 miles the day before, the 5k was folded into my marathon training in preparation for the race the following month. My hips and hamstrings never felt better! Kudos to that PT massage team.
There were a few glitches with the park personnel not showing up as requested by the organizers and many of the runners were a bit confused with the route towards the end. I suggest better markers for next year and assigning volunteers to hold up or point to route. directions. Some runners went through a fence with a hole and then took a shortcut to finish the race. I was guided by my watch an knew that I has a mile or so left when the confusing moment came up. The race timing was excellent and set up and take down accomplished seamlessly. My placement in my age was not correct and the main person reviewed the footage on the spot and corrected my place. One last recommendation is the start of the race. Florida is hot an humid, so races need to be done early. The heat is just too much! I suggest starting the race at 7:30am sharp!
The atmosphere, music and raffles at the end of the race make for a great morning event. I believe they are changing the park venue to avoid personnel and route discrepancies. All good though! I totally recommend this race, especially if you are in the Tampa area.
