Newburyport is a quaint little New England town that is enjoyable to visit. That is the positive part of this post. YuKanRun organizes the half marathon, and I believe there is some room for improvement. First, race packet pickup takes place the morning of the race. It is not ideal for a race with 800 participants to expect that 45 minutes (Packet Pickup was scheduled from 7am-7:45am) is enough time for all of the runners to get their race bib, go to a separate line for the bag, and a separate line for the shirt, then go back to wherever they parked to deposit the swag, and return to the race area only to be greeted by a line that is about 1/2 mile long to use the porta-potties. Having packet pickup the day before the race would GREATLY improve the logistics of this event!
Also, late June (especially this year) can be quite hot and humid. Having an earlier starting time would also be an improvement. Race this year started at 8am. Starting at 7am would be better for the runners.
Additionally, the race info states that there are porta-potties out along the course. There were NO porta-potties along the course after about mile 4.
The course itself is a bit hilly and the road sections are all open to traffic… Not having the roads closed (or at least traffic cones out) is not ideal. The race swag includes a flimsy draw-string bag, a pair of socks, a low-quality shirt, and a basic finisher medal. Nothing is great. Perhaps the race organizers could select one swag item (instead of 4) and improve the quality of it. I have run more than 90 half marathons. This race was not anywhere near the top of the list. I don’t know if I’ll do another YukanRun race again.

I didn’t have any special expectations for this race. I happened to be in the area for a concert the prior night, and thought, why not run a race. There really was not any out of the ordinary scenery from a typical run in a local town. Rolling hills, not difficult, just was an overly humid day for running. There was no swag, shirt and socks, not writing home about either. There were baked goods after the race. Not sure where it was you were to go for free beer, so maybe that is where one should have gone for the after-race party?? I’d say – if you are in the area and looking for a run, then sign up.

This was my first time running a race and I was a bit anxious. The course was clear and easy to follow! Volunteers and staff were super helpful and the check-in process went smoothly. All the merch was so fun and I proudly display my medal in my home. I will definitely run another and would recommend it to any runner, no matter what level they are.

Course was on paved roads with plenty of aid stations that were well staffed with Gatorade and water.
Scenery was okay with views around a lake and country roads.
The course had some rolling hills.
Swag was a nice dri-fit t-shirt and cool finishers medal.
Race production was great by the Yukan Racing.
I definitely recommend going to Plum Island, there was an amazing beach and lighthouse, only about a 15 minute drive. Eat at Bob Lobster.
I definitely recommend this race.

If I were local, I’d run this race again. It’s a great race. Not outstanding, largely because the course itself doesn’t have the kind of scenery that a 5-star race would require, but it’s still a pretty course in places, and the start/finish line is a great staging area. There was food and beer at the end with plenty of other snacks.
The town of Newburyport is cute and it would have been great if the course had run through a few more of the streets here, although I realize making a course come out to 13.1 means you have some limits on where you can run. Not a bucket list race, but if you are in the region, it’s worth driving an hour or two to run this one.
Enjoyable course. Much to see.
Small rolling hills and very nice scenery along the way. Very much enjoyed this trip and race. Very well staffed and great people along the way. Certainly worth it. MORE
